Book excerpt: This book provides in-depth information on Caatinga’s geographical boundaries and ecological systems, including plants, insects, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. It also discusses the major threats to the region’s socio-ecological systems and includes chapters on climate change and fast and large-scale land-use changes, as well as slow and small-scale changes, also known as chronic human disturbances. Subsequent chapters address sustainable agriculture, conservation systems, and sustainable development. Lastly, the book proposes 10 major actions that could enable the transformation of Caatinga into a place where people and nature can thrive together. “I consider this book an excellent example of how scientists worldwide can mobilize their efforts to propose sound solutions for one of the biggest challenges of modern times, i.e., how to protect the world’s natural ecosystems while improving human well-being. I am sure this book will inspire more research and conservation action in the region and perhaps encourage other groups of scientists to produce similar syntheses about their regions.” Russell Mittermeier, Ph.D. Executive Vice-Chair, Conservation International

Book excerpt: Talk is a central activity in social life. But how is ordinary talk organized? How do people coordinate their talk in interaction? And what is the role of talk in wider social processes? Conversation analysis has developed over the past thirty years as a key method for studying social interaction and language use. Its unique perspective and systematic methods make it attractive to a multidisciplinary audience. Yet while much has been written about the field, little of this is designed to be accessible to the undergraduate student encountering this area for the first time. In this book Ian Hutchby and Robin Wooffitt offer the first wide-ranging, accessible introduction to the field. The book offers a basic grounding in the theory and methods of conversation analysis and demonstrates its usefulness by analysing a variety of concrete examples. With an emphasis on practical demonstrations, they show how it addresses key questions in social science and in other professional fields such as human-computer interaction, political communication and speech therapy. Conversation Analysis is written in a lively, engaging and jargon-free style, and will be indispensable reading for undergraduates and their teachers on courses in sociology, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, social psychology, communication studies and anthropology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, many members of the intellectual community have embraced a radical relativism regarding knowledge in general and scientific knowledge in particular, holding that Kuhn, Quine, and Feyerabend have knocked the traditional picture of scientific knowledge into a cocked hat. Is philosophy of science, or mistaken impressions of it, responsible for the rise of relativism? In this book, Laudan offers a trenchant, wide-ranging critique of cognitive relativism and a thorough introduction to major issues in the philosophy of knowledge.

Book excerpt: Sound Tracks is the first comprehensive book on the new geography of popular music, examining the complex links between places, music and cultural identities. It provides an interdisciplinary perspective on local, national and global scenes, from the 'Mersey' and 'Icelandic' sounds to 'world music', and explores the diverse meanings of music in a range of regional contexts. In a world of intensified globalisation, links between space, music and identity are increasingly tenuous, yet places give credibility to music, not least in the 'country', and music is commonly linked to place, as a stake to originality, a claim to tradition and as a marketing device. This book develops new perspectives on these relationships and how they are situated within cultural and geographical thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Gy, a pioneer in every sense of the word, has spent 50 years studying the best way to take a truly representative sample. His greatest achievement perhaps has been to introduce science into the black art of sampling. The now famous and widely used formula bearing his name means that sampling is no longer a lottery but an essential analytical tool. This very readable and practical book, written by Pierre Gy himself, is the first simple guide to Pierre Gy s method to be translated into English. Although Dr Gy s formula was originally developed for the sampling of solid material in mines, etc., the theoretical arguments are equally valid for the sampling of liquids and multi-phase media. This book is as interesting as a historical perspective as it is useful for the practising modern day analyst.
