Book Synopsis Acidic Deposition and Aquatic Ecosystems by : Donald F. Charles
Download or read book Acidic Deposition and Aquatic Ecosystems written by Donald F. Charles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acidic deposition and its effect on aquatic ecosystems have become major scientific and public policy issues in the United States since the early 1970s, and many diverse studies have been completed. This book is the first comprehensive, integrated synthesis of available information on current and potential effects of acidic precipitation on lakes and streams in geographic regions with a high number of low-alkalinity surface water from the Adirondacks and the Southern Blue Ridge to the Upper Midwest to the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada, and the Cascades. Written by leading authors, the book examines the current status of water chemistry and characterizes the processes controlling water chemistry on a regional basis by using and comparing high-quality data sets. Methods for the assessment of long-term changes in water chemistry and their effects in fish and other biota are also presented. The book amply illustrates the substantial diversity among geographical regions with respect to the nature of surface waters and the complexity of their response to acidic deposition. This volume will be of great interest to researchers in limnology, aquatic ecology, environmental chemistry, hydrology, and atmospheric sciences. It will also serve as an important reference for environmental managers and policy makers.
Book Synopsis Ocean Acidification by : Jean-Pierre Gattuso
Download or read book Ocean Acidification written by Jean-Pierre Gattuso and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ocean helps moderate climate change thanks to its considerable capacity to store CO2, through the combined actions of ocean physics, chemistry, and biology. This storage capacity limits the amount of human-released CO2 remaining in the atmosphere. As CO2 reacts with seawater, it generates dramatic changes in carbonate chemistry, including decreases in pH and carbonate ions and an increase in bicarbonate ions. The consequences of this overall process, known as "ocean acidification", are raising concerns for the biological, ecological, and biogeochemical health of the world's oceans, as well as for the potential societal implications. This research level text is the first to synthesize the very latest understanding of the consequences of ocean acidification, with the intention of informing both future research agendas and marine management policy. A prestigious list of authors has been assembled, among them the coordinators of major national and international projects on ocean acidification.

Book Synopsis Chemical Contaminants in Canadian Aquatic Ecosystems by : D. M. Whittle
Download or read book Chemical Contaminants in Canadian Aquatic Ecosystems written by D. M. Whittle and published by Canadian Government Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on those chemicals that persist in the Canadian environment and that are accumulated by aquatic organisms. It summarizes scientific information collected previously, with emphasis on Canadian research findings published in the last decade. The first part of the report introduces the general features of aquatic ecosystems and provides basic information on the fate and effects of chemical contaminants. The second part reviews contaminant related issues for the following geographic areas: Atlantic marine ecosystems including the St. Lawrence, Bay of Fundy, and general north-west Atlantic; freshwater ecosystems including the Great Lakes and inland waters; the Arctic marine ecosystem; and Pacific aquatic ecosystems including the British Columbia coastal ecosystem, the open coast, and some of the major rivers. All chapters discuss the major contaminant issues, important oceanographic or limnological features, biological resources, and sources of contaminants as well as contaminant trends, distribution, and effects. Current and emerging chemical contaminant issues and associated research topics are summarized at the end of each chapter. The third part is an overall assessment of current knowledge of chemical contaminants and their effects on fish and fish habitat, and identifies major current and emerging contaminant issues confronting Canada's fish and fish habitat.

For most of the species, habitat physiognomy is much more important than the acidity of the soil.
Book Synopsis Susceptibility of Aquatic Ecosystems to the Effects of Atmospheric Pollutant Fallout in Quebec by : Canada. Inland Waters Directorate. Quebec Region. Water Planning and Management Branch
Download or read book Susceptibility of Aquatic Ecosystems to the Effects of Atmospheric Pollutant Fallout in Quebec written by Canada. Inland Waters Directorate. Quebec Region. Water Planning and Management Branch and published by Quebec, Quebec : Environment Canada. This book was released on 1981 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impacts on the aquatic ecosystem have been summarized in a general way in terms of productivity and natural cycles as well as more specifically in terms of water quality, primary food chain (fungi, phytoplankton and macrophytes) and predators (zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, fish, amphibians). Interpretative methods are chosen and applied to the available data prior to 1979 for a series of 194 lakes in the province of Quebec. Also, it is shown that the sensitivity of Quebec lakes can only be determined by combining two different interpretative methods: (1) a method to differentiate between acidified and non-acidified lakes and (2) a method which allows one to evaluate the calcium saturation index of the lakes studied.
