Book excerpt: An original and groundbreaking book that examines the psychological devastation of war by comparing the soldiers of Homer’s Iliad with Vietnam veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. In this moving, dazzlingly creative book, Dr. Shay examines the psychological devastation of war by comparing the soldiers of Homer’s Iliad with Vietnam veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. A classic of war literature that has as much relevance as ever in the wake of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, it is a “transcendent literary adventure” (The New York Times) and “clearly one of the most original and most important scholarly works to have emerged from the Vietnam War” (Tim O’Brien, author of The Things They Carried).

Book excerpt: For Angelo Goodlove and Gabriella Montgomery, balancing love and life is a tricky task, especially when dealing with their strong-willed daughter, the once-powerful, Aria. Forcing her to live as a mortal child, her frustrations rear their ugly head. But daily tantrums reinforce their decision to clip her wings-she must experience human life if she is to sit on the throne and rule with empathy. Despite this, Angelo, still a working angel is tasked with a mission he is initially unhappy to take, but upon the Archangel Michael's insistence, he bows to authority and swoops in to rescue Astrid Hansen and Tobyn Anderson from the clutches of an old friend and now enemy, Demetrius. Clueless as to their identities, Angelo knows nothing of their past, but soon comes to understand destiny and fate has tied them together in ways he would never have dreamed of. This is a short story. I would advise reading the previous books in the 'Angel of Mine' series of stories first.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At which moments and in which ways did Jews play a central role in the development of American capitalism? Many popular writers address the intersection of Jews and capitalism, but few scholars, perhaps fearing this question’s anti-Semitic overtones, have pondered it openly. Chosen Capital represents the first historical collection devoted to this question in its analysis of the ways in which Jews in North America shaped and were shaped by America’s particular system of capitalism. Jews fundamentally molded aspects of the economy during the century when American capital was being redefined by industrialization, war, migration, and the emergence of the United States as a superpower. Surveying such diverse topics as Jews’ participation in the real estate industry, the liquor industry, and the scrap metal industry, as well as Jewish political groups and unions bent on reforming American capital, such as the American Labor Party and the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union, contributors to this volume provide a new prism through which to view the Jewish encounter with America. The volume also lays bare how American capitalism reshaped Judaism itself by encouraging the mass manufacturing and distribution of foods like matzah and the transformation of synagogue cantors into recording stars. These essays force us to rethink not only the role Jews played in American economic development but also how capitalism has shaped Jewish life and Judaism over the course of the twentieth century.
