Book excerpt: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted in 2015, are expected to chart a course for development over the next 15 years. The 17 SDGs cover poverty, health, sustainable development, and the environment, among others, but not trade. This book shows that international trade can contribute to achieving all SDGs. It maps out a triple-win scenario where good trade policy (i) spurs international trade, (ii) contributes to development, and (iii) helps achieve the SDGs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on the expertise of faculty and colleagues at the Balsillie School of International Affairs to both locate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a contribution to the development of global government and to examine the political-institutional and financial challenges posed by the SDGs. The contributors are experts in global governance issues in a broad variety of fields ranging from health, food systems, social policy, migration and climate change. An introductory chapter sets out the broad context of the governance challenges involved, and how individual chapters contribute to the analysis. The book begins by focusing on individual SDGs, examining briefly the background to the particular goal and evaluating the opportunities and challenges (particularly governance challenges) in achieving the goal, as well as discussing how this goal relates to other SDGs. The book goes on to address the broader issues of achieving the set of goals overall, examining the novel financing mechanisms required for an enterprise of this nature, the trade-offs involved (particularly between the urgent climate agenda and the social/economic goals), the institutional arrangements designed to enable the achievement of the goals and offering a critical perspective on the enterprise as a whole. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals makes a distinctive contribution by covering a broad range of individual goals with contributions from experts on governance in the global climate, social and economic areas as well as providing assessments of the overall project – its financial feasibility, institutional requisites, and its failures to tackle certain problems at the core. This book will be of great interest to scholars and students of international affairs, development studies and sustainable development, as well as those engaged in policymaking nationally, internationally and those working in NGOs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains assessment of the progress, or the lack of it, in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through review of the assessments and of case studies, readers can draw lessons from the actions that could work to positively address the goals. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is designed to catalyze action in critical areas of importance to humanity and the planet. The effort to implement the SDGs, however, demands a sense of urgency in the face of environmental degradation, climate change, emerging conflicts, and growing inequality, among a number of other socio-economic problems. Five years after the launch of the 2030 Agenda, this book takes stock of how far the world has come and how we can position ourselves to achieve the global targets. The book is one of the first to assess how the implementation is impeded by the onset of COVID-19. It contains a special chapter on COVID-19 and the SDGs, while many thematic chapters on different SDGs also assess how COVID-19 adversely affects implementation, and what measures could be taken to minimize the adverse effects. This publication thus provides a fresh look at implementation of the SDGs highlighting impactful and creative actions that go beyond the business-as-usual development efforts. The volume reinforces this analysis with expert recommendations on how to support implementation efforts and achieve the SDGs through international and national strategies and the involvement of both the public and private sectors. The result is an indispensable textual tool for policy makers, academia, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as the public, as we march toward the 2030 deadline.

Book excerpt: In 2015, the United Nations established seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that aimed 'to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all' by 2030. The chapters within this collection address each of these SDGs, considering how they relate to one another and international law, and what institutions could aid their implementation. Development has been a contentious topic since the decolonization period after World War II, and issues surrounding sustainable development are necessarily impacted by the multifaceted relationship between the Global South and Global North. Confronting the context and challenge of sustainable development, this collection outlines how the international economic system problematizes the attainment of the SDGs. Introducing a novel, cosmopolitan approach, this book offers new ways of understanding sustainable development and suggests potential solutions so that we might finally achieve it.

Book excerpt: This book defines ‘sustainable development’, setting out the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from their inception in January 2011 to their operationalization in September 2015. It maps the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and their targets to the SDGs and their respective targets. Nine SDGs are classified on the basis of the mapping exercise as proceeding from the MDGs, and eight as new Goals. One of the nine SDGs (SDG 1) is the subject of a ‘Continuation Microstudy’, the structure for which is also used for the ‘Continuation Macrostudy’ that assesses the others from this group for punctual achievement. One of the eight new Goals (SDG 10) is the subject of a ‘New Ground Microstudy’, the structure for which is condensed into a ‘New Ground Macrostudy’ that evaluates the other new Goals for punctual accomplishment. The book will be useful to students of development finance and economics, policy-makers in the area of sustainable development, and members of the public who are interested in the world around us and in sustainable development, in particular.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - Basics and General, grade: 5, Massey University, New Zealand, language: English, abstract: How may the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals lead to equality and justice for all? And can the success of the Sustainable Development Goals be determined through its indicators? This essay focuses on responding to these two questions. On 18 September 2000, the United Nations and its General Assembly adopted the Millennium Development Goals. This project was launched with the objective of contributing to the development of the poorest countries in terms of eradicating extreme hunger, poverty and facilitate access to education. Also, it aimed to promote gender equality and health for all. In order to achieve its purpose by 2015, the Millennium Development Goals were distributed in eight goals, 18 targets and 48 indicators. However, by the end of 2015 and until now, millions of people living in developing countries continue facing hunger, extreme poverty, lack of education and health support; which could indicate that the Millennium Development Goals did not achieve its objectives completely. For this reason, in September 2015, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a new international development project named the Sustainable Development Goals, with the aim of promoting the sustainable development of all the countries in the world and the deadline is 2030. The Sustainable Development Goals are wider than the Millennium Development Goals. For example, with the aim of promoting and achieving equality and justice for all the Sustainable Development Goals have allocated 17 goals, 169 targets and 230 indicators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A positive agenda for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 All 193 member nations of the United Nations agreed in September 2015 to adopt a set of seventeen "Sustainable Development Goals," to be achieved by 2030. Each of the goals—in such areas as education and health care —is laudable in and of itself, and governments and organizations are working hard on them. But so far there is no overall, positive agenda of what new things need to be done to ensure the goals are achieved across all nations. In a search of fresh approaches to the longstanding problems targeted by the Sustainable Development Goals, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Global Economy and Development program at Brookings mounted a collaborative research effort to advance implementation of Agenda 2030. This edited volume is the product of that effort. The book approaches the UN's goals through three broad lenses. The first considers new approaches to capturing value. Examples include Nigeria's first green bonds, practical methods to expand women's economic opportunities, benchmarking to reflect business contributions to achieving the goals, new incentives for investment in infrastructure, and educational systems that promote cross-sector problem solving. The second lens entails new approaches to targeting places, including oceans, rural areas, fast-growing developing cities, and the interlocking challenge of data systems, including geospatial information generated by satellites. The third lens focuses on updating governance, broadly defined. Issues include how civil society can align with the SDG challenge; how an advanced economy like Canada can approach the goals at home and abroad; what needs to be done to foster new approaches for managing the global commons; and how can multilateral institutions for health and development finance evolve.

Book excerpt: The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2016 provides the first account of where the world stands at the beginning of our journey towards a sustainable future for people and the planet. This inaugural progress report presents an overview of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, based on a proposed global indicator framework, using data currently available. The data and analysis in the report show us where gaps and challenges are, so that steps can be taken to reverse these trends. With collective global action, we can seize the opportunities before us and, together, ensure the 2030 Agenda leaves no one behind. The report is prepared by the Statistics Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, based on the data and information provided by UN and other international agencies.
