Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE ASAUK FAGE & OLIVER PRIZE 2016 The author meticulously contextualises the experiences of Achebe and his peers as students at Government College Umuahia and argues for a re-assessment of this influential group of Nigerian writers in relation to the literary culture fostered by the school and its tutors. This is the first in-depth scholarly study of the literary awakening of the young intellectuals who became known as Nigeria's "first-generation" writers in the post-colonial period. Terri Ochiagha's research focuses on Chinua Achebe, Elechi Amadi, Chike Momah, Christopher Okigbo and Chukwuemeka Ike, and also discusses the experiences of Gabriel Okara, Ken Saro-Wiwa and I.C. Aniebo, in the context of their education in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s at Government College, Umuahia. The author provides fresh perspectives on Postcolonial and World literary processes, colonial education in British Africa, literary representations of colonialism and Chinua Achebe's seminal position in African literature. She demonstrates how each of the writers used this very particular education to shape their own visions of the world in which they operated and examines the implications that this had for African literature as a whole. Supplementary material is available online of some of the original sources. Whilst continuing to write further influential novels and essays, Achebe also taught other African writers to use their skills to help their national leaders to fight for their freedoms in the post-colonial era, as internal warfare compounded the damage caused by European powers during the colonial era. Download or read book Chinua Achebe written by Umelo Ojinmah and published by Spectrum Books. This book was released on 1991 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Chinua Achebe: New Perspectives" synthesizes the themes: power and responsibility, particularly as they affect political governance in Africa. It valiantly explores and attempts to correlate the issues of gross abuse of power and privilege as central foci in Achebe's fiction. Through a systematic appraisal of these works, from "Things Fall Apart" to "Anthills of the Savannah," Dr. Umelo R. Ojinmah makes a sustainable case, that to Achebe, things will always fall apart until "our people" begin to understand the responsibility that power imposes on those who exercise it. -- From publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Issues in African Literature by : E. Nnolim
Download or read book Issues in African Literature written by E. Nnolim and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The multitudinous nature of African literature has always been an issue but really not a problem, although its oral base has been used by expatriate critics to accuse African literature of thin plots, superficial characterisation, and narrative structures. African literature also, it is observed, is a mixed grill: it is oral; it is written in vernacular or tribal tongues; written in foreign tongues English, French, Portuguese and within the foreign language in which it is written, pidgin and creole further bend the already bent language giving African literature a further taint of linguistic impurity. African literature further suffers from the nature of its "newness" and this created problems for the critic. Because it is new, and because its critics are in simultaneous existence with its writers, we confront the problem of "instant analysis". Issues in African Literature continues the debate and tries to clarify contemporary burning issues in African literature, by focussing on particular areas where the debate has been most concerned or around which it has hovered and been persistent.
