Book Synopsis Architects and Engineers by : Roland May
Download or read book Architects and Engineers written by Roland May and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2022-10-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first decades of the 20th century, civil engineers were widely seen as a role model for future architects. Their role within the contemporary architecture movements, however, was hardly discussed. To this day, even fundamental questions about collaborations, rivalries, or conflicts between the two sister disciplines still await answers. This volume brings together contributions by international scholars on the cooperation between architects and civil engineers in various countries in the interwar period. By offering both insights into national peculiarities and new reflections on the general nature, character, and significance of such joint efforts, it opens exciting new perspectives on the modern building culture of Europe and beyond.

Book Synopsis Probabilistic service life model of RC structures subjected to the combined effect of chloride-induced corrosion and cyclic loading by : Emilio Bastidas Arteaga
Download or read book Probabilistic service life model of RC structures subjected to the combined effect of chloride-induced corrosion and cyclic loading written by Emilio Bastidas Arteaga and published by Universidad de los Andes. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the advantages of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is its durability. However, when they are exposed to aggressive environments (e.g., chloride penetration) and cyclic loading, its performance can be significantly affected. Modeling deterioration produced by chloride penetration is useful to ensure optimal levels of serviceability and safety. The main purpose of this book is to propose a new model for lifetime assessment of RC structures subjected to deterioration produced by the combined action of corrosion and fatigue. The formulation of the model is based on a state of the art review on modeling of this kind of deterioration. Furthermore, taking into account the importance of the uncertainty related to the whole deterioration process, this book also presents a stochastic framework for this problem. Finally, several practical examples illustrate the effects of the corrosion-fatigue process in the reduction of life-cycle of RC structures.

Book Synopsis History of Construction Cultures Volume 1 by : João Mascarenhas-Mateus
Download or read book History of Construction Cultures Volume 1 written by João Mascarenhas-Mateus and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of Construction Cultures Volume 1 contains papers presented at the 7ICCH – Seventh International Congress on Construction History, held at the Lisbon School of Architecture, Portugal, from 12 to 16 July, 2021. The conference has been organized by the Lisbon School of Architecture (FAUL), NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities, the Portuguese Society for Construction History Studies and the University of the Azores. The contributions cover the wide interdisciplinary spectrum of Construction History and consist on the most recent advances in theory and practical case studies analysis, following themes such as: - epistemological issues; - building actors; - building materials; - building machines, tools and equipment; - construction processes; - building services and techniques ; -structural theory and analysis ; - political, social and economic aspects; - knowledge transfer and cultural translation of construction cultures. Furthermore, papers presented at thematic sessions aim at covering important problematics, historical periods and different regions of the globe, opening new directions for Construction History research. We are what we build and how we build; thus, the study of Construction History is now more than ever at the centre of current debates as to the shape of a sustainable future for humankind. Therefore, History of Construction Cultures is a critical and indispensable work to expand our understanding of the ways in which everyday building activities have been perceived and experienced in different cultures, from ancient times to our century and all over the world.
