Book excerpt: Major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and developed countries worldwide. In the United States, Latinos constitute the largest ethnic minority group. The increase in number of Latino immigrants and U. S born Latinos poses immense challenges for governmental, medical, and nonprofit institutions. These challenges are apparent in the efforts to address the mental health needs of current and future Latino populations. For instance, the literature shows that second or later generations of immigrants have a higher prevalence of mental disorders compared to first generation immigrants. The current study sought to identify the relationship between acculturation and depressive symptomatology using acculturative stress as a moderator variable in a sample of Latino participants from various settings. The current study examined two groups that varied in the level of acculturation High Hispanic-Low Anglo participants and High Hispanic-High Anglo participants. It was hypothesized that acculturative stress would be a moderator between acculturation and depression symptoms. It was predicted that High Hispanic-Low Anglo, high stressed individuals would show higher depressive symptom levels compared to High Hispanic-High Anglo, low stressed individuals. Moderation analysis showed that acculturative stress did not significantly moderate the relationship between acculturation level and depressive symptoms(~= -.174, p = .315). Book excerpt: The increasing number of aging Latino and Asian immigrants demands a clearer understanding of depression and distress among these groups. Using data from the National Latino and Asian American Study, 495 Latino and Asian immigrants over 60 years old were assessed for levels of acculturative stress and social support, occurrence of a major depressive episode within the last 12 months (MDE) and selfrated mental distress. Aging Asian immigrants were less likely to report 12-month MDE while marginally more likely to report distress compared to Latino immigrants. Although there were significant correlations between acculturative stress and social support, social support did not buffer the effect of acculturative stress on either the probability of reporting a 12-month MDE or higher distress. Furthermore, although predicted by previous research and theory, the associations of acculturative stress and social support with depression did not differ between Asians and Hispanics. Implications for future research are discussed.

Foreign-born Asians and Latinos have significant mental health advantages, such as lower rates of depression and anxiety, compared to their U.S.-born counterparts. This phenomenon has been referred to as the "immigrant paradox," where foreign nativity serves as a protective factor against psychiatric disorders, despite the stresses often associated with immigrating and settling into a new country. However, relatively few empirical studies have examined suicidal behavior among Asians and Latinos as it relates to acculturation, and results have been mixed. Given that suicidal ideation and suicide attempts are strongly associated with suicide death, better understanding the relationship between acculturation and suicidal behavior can offer some insight into the demographic patterns of suicide. Using Joiner's interpersonal theory of suicide, this study utilized pooled data from the 2011-2014 California Health Interview Surveys, a population-based, random-digit dial telephone survey representative of California's households. The analysis, based on interviews with 17,502 Latinos and 7,738 Asian adults over the age of 18, investigated variations in suicidal proclivity among Asian and Latino adults as predicted by three acculturation measures, proportion of life spent in the U.S., English fluency, and generational status, after adjusting for sociodemographic and psychiatric variables. Analysis of weighted lifetime prevalence of suicidal behaviors revealed significant differences in sociodemographic characteristics and acculturation patterns at both the racial and ethnic subgroup level. Multivariate logistic regression analyses also revealed significant heterogeneity between and among racial groups with respect to acculturation. Risk for suicidal behaviors increased with acculturation for both Asians and Latinos, but was not shown to be significant for Koreans or South Americans. The findings of this study underscore the need to disaggregate racial data when making inferences about suicidal behavior. Clinical interventions and public health efforts should be focused at the ethnic subgroup level and should consider the impact of culture and acculturation on mental health outcomes.

Book excerpt: The immigrant paradox theorizes that foreign nativity protects against a host of stressors, such as discrimination and acculturative stress, and negative mental health outcomes in individuals living in a new host country (Burnham Hough, Karno, Escobar, & Telles, 1987). This theory has been used to explain why, despite risk factors, stressors, and challenges immigrants face when moving to a new country, they exhibit lower rates of depressive symptoms and other mental health problems and greater well-being than U.S. born Hispanics and Non-Hispanic Whites (NHW) (Alegria et al., 2007; Garcia-Coll & Marks, 2012; Markides & Coreil, 1986). Current research indicates that the protective nature of this paradox may be limited (Brabeck, Lykes & Hunter, 2014). Additionally, anti-immigrant policies may attenuate the protective effect of the paradox (Hatzenbuehhler et al., 2017). In the present study, we examined the role various factors, such as ethnic identity, acculturative and immigrant stress, discrimination, and citizenship status, play in predicting Hispanic immigrants’ psychological distress and well-being. Participants were recruited through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) and self-identified as Hispanic or Latino immigrants aged 18 and older (N = 56) who either reported being U.S. citizens (N = 38) or non-U.S. citizens (N = 17). We found that discrimination and ethnic affiliation emerged as important predictors in Hispanic immigrants’ well-being and distress. Furthermore, the relevance of immigration policy in predicting anxiety, distress, and lower well-being was supported by current findings. Contrary to our hypotheses we did not find that citizenship or acculturation played a significant role in predicting distress or well-being in this sample. These findings raise important and practical implications for those working with and better understanding of Hispanic immigrants. Further results, implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Due to this increase in Latino immigrants, investigation of their mental and physical health is crucial. Few studies have investigated conjointly both physical and mental health in Latino immigrant adults. Daily discrimination and acculturative stress have been found to affect the mental and physical health of Latino immigrants. Cultural strengths including social support, religiosity, and enculturation have been linked to Latino immigrant health. In the minority stress model, cultural strengths have been theorized to moderate relationships between discrimination and health. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among acculturative stress, discrimination, and mental and physical health. A secondary aim was to examine whether direct and indirect effects among these series of variables are moderated by social support, religiosity, and enculturation. A community sample of 204 Latino immigrants were recruited. Generally, bivariate associations between variables were congruent with previous research. Anxiety was found to mediated the effects of both acculturative stress and discrimination on physical health. Depression was found to mediate the effect of discrimination on physical health. Social support was found to moderate indirect effect of discrimination on physical health through depression. Enculturation moderated the indirect effects of both acculturative stress and discrimination on physical health through anxiety. Results from this study indicate that minority stressors can impact physical health through mental health, and these relationships can be buffered by links to cultural strengths including social support and enculturation.
