Download or read book Ourselves and Others written by Peter Mackridge and published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC. This book was released on 1997-03 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was incorporated into the Greek state in 1912, Greek Macedonia constituted a mosaic of populations who spoke different languages and shared different cultures and religions. The Greek state, the local authorities and the local intelligentsia strove to achieve the ethnic and cultural assimilation of all these populations -- in the end, with varying degrees of success. Long the site of fierce nationalist activity, Macedonia is a revealing microcosm of the ethnic divides that resist the homogenizing tendencies of nation-states throughout the world. This timely and interdisciplinary book brings together the work of specialists in various fields to spotlight the cultural processes of assimilation that have taken place in Greek Macedonia since 1912. It sheds new light on the old and complex socio-historical roots of this hotly contested area and of the Balkans in general, and will serve as a model for future studies on nationalism, ethnic identity and cultural heritage.
Book Synopsis The Macedonian Conflict by : Loring M. Danforth
Download or read book The Macedonian Conflict written by Loring M. Danforth and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greeks and Macedonians are presently engaged in an often heated dispute involving competing claims to a single identity. Each group asserts that they, and they alone, have the right to identify themselves as Macedonians. The Greek government denies the existence of a Macedonian nation and insists that all Macedonians are Greeks, while Macedonians vehemently assert their existence as a unique people. Here Loring Danforth examines the Macedonian conflict in light of contemporary theoretical work on ethnic nationalism, the construction of national identities and cultures, the invention of tradition, and the role of the state in the process of building a nation. The conflict is set in the broader context of Balkan history and in the more narrow context of the recent disintegration of Yugoslavia. Danforth focuses on the transnational dimension of the "global cultural war" taking place between Greeks and Macedonians both in the Balkans and in the diaspora. He analyzes two issues in particular: the struggle for human rights of the Macedonian minority in northern Greece and the campaign for international recognition of the newly independent Republic of Macedonia. The book concludes with a detailed analysis of the construction of identity at an individual level among immigrants from northern Greece who have settled in Australia, where multiculturalism is an official policy. People from the same villages, members of the same families, living in the northern suburbs of Melbourne have adopted different national identities.

Book Synopsis Big Sky Macedonians: A Study of Montana's Macedonian-Americans by : Victor Sinadinoski
Download or read book Big Sky Macedonians: A Study of Montana's Macedonian-Americans written by Victor Sinadinoski and published by Macedonians of America. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of Macedonians called Montana their home during the first few decades of the 20th century. They left their manufacturing jobs in Illinois, Indiana and Ohio and flocked into Montana, where they joined thousands of others laboring under the open sky to create one of America's most extensive railroad networks. For many of these migrant workers, their stay in Montana was brief - they eventually returned to the Midwest or to their native Macedonia. However, some Macedonians remained in Big Sky Country forever. Big Sky Macedonians explores the immigration of Macedonians to Montana in two parts. The first part analyzes data and trends for 645 Macedonians who ventured into Montana for employment, while the second part journeys through the lives of those Macedonians who sealed their fate in Montana. Sinadinoski offers a comprehensive and personal overview of a segment of Macedonian-American history that has hitherto been largely ignored.

This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riots. Vendettas. Blackmail. Murder. For thousands of Macedonians who settled in Granite City and its environs during the first decades of the 20th century, life in the New World was in many ways the same as in the Old World. These Macedonians may have escaped their impoverished and enslaved homeland for prospects of prosperity and freedom in America, but Macedonia followed them across the ocean to the saloons, factories, and boarding houses of Granite City. The First Macedonian Colony explores the Macedonian immigrant experience in Granite City during the early 20th century. It examines the monopoly that the wealthy Macedonian bankers and businessmen held over the local Macedonians; details the political and ethnic rivalries of the Macedonians, Greeks and Bulgarians; and chronicles ordinary Macedonians as they integrated into American society all while preserving their Macedonian identity and culture. This little-known story of America's first Macedonian settlement carries readers on a rousing voyage that will challenge all preconceived notions about the history of Macedonian immigration to America.

What follows in these pages is the story of the life and persecution of George Pirinsky in America.

This book was released on 2006-08-03 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the topic of acculturation has evolved from a relatively minor research area to one of the most researched subjects in the field of cross-cultural psychology. This edited handbook compiles and systemizes the current state of the art by exploring the broad international scope of acculturation. A collection of the world's leading experts in the field review the various contexts for acculturation, the central theories, the groups and individuals undergoing acculturation (immigrants, refugees, indigenous people, expatriates, students and tourists) and discuss how current knowledge can be applied to make both the process and its outcome more manageable and profitable. Building on the theoretical and methodological framework of cross-cultural psychology, the authors focus specifically on the issues that arise when people from one culture move to another culture and the reciprocal adjustments, tensions and benefits involved.

Download or read book Acculturation written by John W. Berry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acculturation is the process of group and individual changes in culture and behaviour that result from intercultural contact. These changes have been taking place forever, and continue at an increasing pace as more and more peoples of different cultures move, meet and interact. Variations in the meanings of the concept, and some systematic conceptualisations of it are presented. This is followed by a survey of empirical work with indigenous, immigrant and ethnocultural peoples around the globe that employed both ethnographic (qualitative) and psychological (quantitative) methods. This wide-ranging research has been undertaken in a quest for possible general principles (or universals) of acculturation. This Element concludes with a short evaluation of the field of acculturation; its past, present and future.
