Book Synopsis Vocational Education and Training Institutions by : Vladimir Gasskov
Download or read book Vocational Education and Training Institutions written by Vladimir Gasskov and published by International Labour Organization. This book was released on 2006 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective public governance and management continue to be key to the vocational education and training (VET) sector. This Handbook and CD-ROM suggests that the VET institutions' responsiveness to market demand and their ability to operate flexibly and cost-efficiently are strongly determined by the degree of their management, financial and academic autonomy, as well as by the competence of their staff. Based on experiences in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, the Handbook is not country specific but provides general approaches to the management of VET institutions. It is accompanied by a CD-ROM that provides summaries of national management practices in the VET sector and of national policies, reports and legal documents, as well as real-life management instruments applied by VET institutions. The Handbook consists of 11 modules with 43 learning units, while the CD-ROM provides access to more than 400 documents. The Handbook and CD-ROM are intended as self-learning materials for VET managers, as resource material for management development programmes in the VET sector and as an outline for performance review of VET institutions.

Book Synopsis Skills for the Labor Market in the Philippines by : Emanuela Di Gropello
Download or read book Skills for the Labor Market in the Philippines written by Emanuela Di Gropello and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Filipino economy has experienced overall growth over the last 20 years, but the growth of the manufacturing sector has been sluggish, and the country has lost innovation capacity. Regaining momentum will depend on many factors, but skills have a key role to play in supporting the growing service sector, improving the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector, and enhancing the long-term ability of the country to innovate and adapt and assimilate new technologies. 'Skills for the Labor Market in the Philippines' analyzes the functional skills with which workers need to be equipped to be employable and support firms competitiveness and productivity, and evaluates the role of the education and training system in providing these skills. Based on an innovative survey of employers, this book is the most comprehensive attempt thus far to review the skills that matter for the labor market. The book reveals that a dramatic increase in educational attainment occurred in just under two decades in the Philippines. However, in light of the growing demand for skills, the authors also make it clear that there are indications of emerging skills gaps, suggesting that skills are becoming a constraining factor for economic growth. The authors flesh out several policy implications, which should provide a valuable contribution to improving the country s education and training system. The book is primarily intended for the policy makers and researchers who shape the delivery of education and training in the Philippines and other middle-income countries.

Download or read book Innovative Strategies for Accelerated Human Resources Development in South Asia written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant investments have been made to modernize and improve the provision of education services. Strengthening teacher development has been a key component of these investments. However, programs on teacher development have provided mixed results. This report adopts a 360-degree perspective to review the current status of teacher development, demand and supply, and performance management in five countries from the South Asia region including Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, with limited reference to Bhutan and Maldives. It probes beyond teacher in-service training and teacher job conditions, and investigates systemic and structural issues. Continued investment may not be the best option to improve the quality and supply of teachers, and so the challenge is how to leverage resources to meet the demand.

Book Synopsis Building on Early Gains in Afghanistan's Health, Nutrition, and Population Sector by : World Bank
Download or read book Building on Early Gains in Afghanistan's Health, Nutrition, and Population Sector written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-05-19 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first of its kind to present a comprehensive assessment of the health sector in Afghanistan. Although health outcomes here are some of the worst in the world, the sector has made considerable progress since 2001. A nationwide survey conducted in late 2006 found that the infant mortality rate had fallen from 165 to 129 per 1,000 live births, and the under-five mortality rate had fallen from 257 to 191 per 1,000 live births. These figures represent a 22 percent and a 26 percent decline, respectively, from the end of 2001. Similarly, coverage of prenatal care has increased from less than 5 percent to 32 percent, and childhood vaccinations of DPT3 (diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus) have increased from less than 20 percent to 35 percent between 2003 and 2006. Administrative data indicate that the number of functioning primary health care facilities has nearly doubled, from 498 in 2001 to more than 936 in 2008. Also, the quality of care in publicly financed facilities has increased by about 22 percent from 2004 to 2006. Although this progress is encouraging, it is not sufficient to ensure that Afghanistan will achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). 'Building on Early Gains in Afghanistan s Health, Nutrition, and Population Sector' presents specific policy options for Afghanistan s Ministry of Public Health to consider in advancing to the next level of care for its population. The guiding principles of these options are consistency with the ministry s vision and the feasibility of implementation. The specific challenges include revising the content of the basic package of health services (BPHS), rethinking the delivery of the BPHS, securing sustained and predictable financing, defining the role of the emerging private sector, addressing the shortage of human resources for health, and expanding the capacity of the ministry to enable it to effectively carry out its stewardship functions. This book was prepared as a resource for policy makers, practitioners, and researchers in Afghanistan and other conflict-affected countries. It emphasizes the policy implications of the findings presented.
