Book excerpt: Accreditation of early childhood programs helps teachers and administrators evaluate and improve their practice, helps parents make informed decisions, and helps children receive quality programming. This manual explains the policies and procedures for accreditation of early childhood programs through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). Following a list of relevant definitions, Part 1 of the manual presents the purpose and goals of NAEYC's accreditation system, eligibility requirements, applications to multisite organizations and to agency and corporate child care systems; and describes the accreditation process of self-study, validation, and the commission decision. Part 2 presents the criteria--with interpretations--for high-quality early childhood programs, including history and development of the criteria, interrelationships among criteria, and how decisions are made. Criteria are presented in the following areas: (1) interactions among teachers and children; (2) curriculum; (3) relationships among teachers and families; (4) staff qualifications and professional development; (5) administration; (6) staffing; (7) physical environment; (8) health and safety; (9) nutrition and food service; and (10) evaluation. The manual's five appendices provide examples of developmentally appropriate practice, handwashing guidelines, nutrition requirements for infants and preschoolers, guidelines for food preparation and service, and the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and Statement of Commitment. The manual concludes with information about NAEYC and the accreditation fee structure. (Contains 143 references.) (KB)

This book was released on 2005 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More and more teachers of young children are being asked to develop their curriculum according to standards. This essential resource will guide educators as they grapple with a plethora of issues, questions, and practices surrounding the use of standards in the early childhood classroom. Carol Seefeldt, well-known educator and bestselling author, offers teachers an overview of the standards movement; describes the status of standards in early education; presents the issues around the design and selection of standards; and provides practical strategies for effectively implementing standards with young children (preschool through the early primary grades). This book provides both the background knowledge and a working understanding of standards to help teachers: successfully judge and select standards; design appropriate ways of using and working with standards; and develop appropriate assessment strategies. Illustrated with children's work, this "how-to" guide: provides practical illustrations of how standards can be used to benefit early childhood classrooms, including many sample activities; demonstrates how to work with standards in the separate subject areas of the sciences, arts, language and literacy, mathematics, and social studies; offers ideas for including all children, such as those with special needs and those just learning English; and describes a project, Children Study Their Play Yard, illustrating how thematic, standards-based, problem-solving learning can be integrated into the total curriculum.

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Early Childhood Education written by Doris Pronin Fromberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Encyclopedia is a reference work about young children in the USA, designed for use by policy makers, community planners, parents of young children, teacher and early childhood educators, programme and school administrators, among others. The field of early childhood education has been affected by changes taking place in the nation’s economy, demographics, schools, communities and families that influence political and professional decisions. These diverse historical, political economic, socio-cultural, intellectual and educational influences on early childhood education have hindered the development of a clear definition of the field. The Encyclopedia provides an opportunity to define the field against the background of these influences and relates the field of early childhood education to its diverse contexts and to the cultural and technological resources currently affecting it.
