Book Synopsis Hatch's Perennials: Salvia and Sedum by : Laurence C. Hatch
Download or read book Hatch's Perennials: Salvia and Sedum written by Laurence C. Hatch and published by TCR Press. This book was released on 2015-04-05 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the cultivars of two major genera with detailed descriptions, original large digital images, history of cultivars, and sources links to new and rare material. There are 365 cultivars of Salvia and 266 of Sedum in this ground-breaking 95 page study of sage and stonecrop. More than 35 years ago, horticultural taxonomist Larry Hatch became frustrated with the lack of comprehensive information on the varieties of hardy herbaceous plants. He still is not satisfied and since that time has created annual updates to Hatch's Perennials to set the record straight. He took his work to several print publishers and not one wanted a perennial encyclopedia over 1200 pages due to the expense of being exhaustive, detailed, and including high-res, page-wide images for so many plants. The New Ornamentals Society and cultivar.org took him up on this challenge to create a much better perennial guide.

Book Synopsis Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants: Crassulaceae by : Urs Eggli
Download or read book Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants: Crassulaceae written by Urs Eggli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume covering the Crassulaceae marks the completion of the successful handbook series that presents a complete coverage of the so-called "other" succulents, i.e. of all taxa of suc culent plants with the exception of the Cactaceae. It is with pride that this volume is now put before the public. Together with its predecessors, it is the fruit of a truly international project. Not only does the present volume constitute the first complete synopsis of the large and horticulturally important family Crassulaceae published since the treatment by Berger (1930), but the handbook series as a whole is a landmark in succulent plant literature. The history of the project that eventually led to the publication of the present handbook series was outlined in the Preface to the Monocotyledons Volume, published in the summer of 2001. A short summary of its history will therefore suffice. Handbooks devoted to succulent plants (including cacti) have a long-standing tradition. First treatments covering the family Cactaceae were already published in the 19th century, but the first handbook dealing with the so-called "other succulents", authored by Hermann Jacobsen, was only published in 1954 - 1955, then called "Handbuch der sukkulenten Pflanzen". A revised and en larged English edition was published in 1959 and was repeatedly reprinted subsequently.

Book Synopsis Biodiversity and Chemotaxonomy by : Kishan Gopal Ramawat
Download or read book Biodiversity and Chemotaxonomy written by Kishan Gopal Ramawat and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant classifications are based on morphological characters and it is difficult, particularly in small plants and grasses, to identify these below generic level on the basis of these characters using a dissecting microscope. Plant species have intra- and inter-specific variation in secondary metabolites which can be utilized as marker compounds for identification and classification of plants. Secondary metabolites are produced as a result of primary metabolism and the production of these compounds not only involves several genes but also it is an energy dependent process. Hence these products cannot be considered as insignificant for the plant and the environment. Modern tools of molecular biology and secondary metabolites present in them can definitively decide about classification of plants. Absence of correct identification of plant is associated to many problems of resource utilization. Due to wide availability of these tools, interest has revived in systematics and correct classification of plants based on these parameters for their sustainable utilization and resource management. The purpose of this book is to assess the potential of phytochemical and molecular tools in the systematic and classification of plants. The topics covered include species concept, barcoding and phylogenetic analysis, chemotaxonomy use of polyketides, carotenes, cuticular wax, volatile oils, biodiversity of corals, metazoans, Ruta and Echinocereus. It provides comprehensive and broad subject-based reviews, useful for students, teachers, researchers, and all others interested in the field. The field has been kept wide and general to accommodate the wide-ranging topics. This book will be useful to agriculturists, chemists, botanists, industrialists, and those involved in planning of crop plants.
