Book Synopsis The Performance of Italian Basso Continuo by : Giulia Nuti
Download or read book The Performance of Italian Basso Continuo written by Giulia Nuti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basso continuo accompaniment calls upon a complex tapestry of harmonic, rhythmic, compositional, analytical and improvisational skills. The evolving knowledge that underpinned the performance of basso continuo was built up and transmitted from the late 1500s to the second half of the eighteenth century, when changes in instruments together with the assertion of control by composers over their works brought about its demise. By tracing the development of basso continuo over time and across the regions of Italy where differing practices emerged, Giulia Nuti accesses this body of musical usage. Sources include the music itself, introductions and specific instructions and requirements in song books and operas, contemporary accounts of performances and, in the later period of basso continuo, description and instruction offered in theoretical treatises. Changes in instruments and instrumental usage and the resulting sounds available to composers and performers are considered, as well as the altering relationship between the improvising continuo player and the composer. Extensive documentation from both manuscript and printed sources, some very rare and others better known, in the original language, followed by a precise English translation, is offered in support of the arguments. There are also many musical examples, transcribed and in facsimile. Giulia Nuti provides both a scholarly account of the history of basso continuo and a performance-driven interpretation of how this music might be played.

Book Synopsis Musical Improvisation by : Gabriel Solis
Download or read book Musical Improvisation written by Gabriel Solis and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A musical practice used for centuries the world over, improvisation too often has been neglected by scholars who dismiss it as either technically undissectible or inexplicably mysterious. At different times and in different cultures, performing music that is not "precomposed" has constituted an artful expression of the performer's individuality (the Baroque); a wild, unthinking form of expression (jazz antagonists); and the best method to train inexperienced musicians to use their instruments (the Middle East). This wide-ranging collection of essays considers musical improvisation from a variety of approaches, including ethnomusicology, education, performance, historical musicology, and music theory. Laying the groundwork for even further research into improvisation, the contributors of this volume delve into topics as diverse as the creative minds of Mozart and Beethoven, the place of improvised musics in Western and non-Western societies, and the development of jazz as a musical and cultural phenomenon.
Book Synopsis Harpsichord and Lute Music in 17th-Century France by : D. Ledbetter
Download or read book Harpsichord and Lute Music in 17th-Century France written by D. Ledbetter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-12 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of the 17th-century French harpsichord composers, the clavecinistes, are among the principal treasures of the harpsichord repertoire. It is a commmonplace of music histories that their style was strongly influenced by contemporary lutenists, yet the assessment of this influence has until now been limited to pointing out a few superficial resemblances. This book is the first comprehensive account of the relationship between the two styles. The nature and extent of the influence can now be seen as much more far-reaching than has been supposed. The clavecinistes adopted many details of lute style, and an understanding of these is essential for the proper performance of their works. More importantly, the lute style opened up the possibility of an entirely new expressive dimension in the playing of the harpsichord; in exploring this the clavecinistes evolved a style which dominated European keyboard music in the 17th-century, and provided a basis for the subsequent development of idiomatic keyboard style.
Book Synopsis Composers' Intentions? by : Andrew Parrott
Download or read book Composers' Intentions? written by Andrew Parrott and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2015 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprises selected essays concerning musical performance practice by conductor Andrew Parrott, an acknowledged expert in the field. Spanning some thirty-five years of Parrott's career as both performer and researcher, the volume brings together seminal writings on Monteverdi, Purcell and J. S. Bach, as well as an expanded version of a major new article from 2015. With a focus on vocal and choral music, the book covers a broad timespan (from the fourteenth to eighteenth centuries) and multifarious approaches (from extensive scholarly articles to radio broadcasts). Authoritative, provocative and readable, Parrott's writing is packed with detailed information of value to scholars, performers, students and curious listeners alike. At the same time, the book sheds light on key topics of historically informed performance from the past four decades. ANDREW PARROTT, conductor, is perhaps best known for his many pioneering recordings of pre-classical repertory from Machaut to Handel, principally for EMI with the London-based Taverner Consort, Choir and Players, which he founded in 1973. Recent CDs include his reconstruction of Bach's 'lost' Trauer-Music for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen (released in 2011) and a 'thoroughly researched and re-imagined' account of Monteverdi's L'Orfeo (2013). He is also co-editor of The New Oxford Book of Carols (1992) and author of The Essential Bach Choir (The Boydell Press, 2000).
