The closest I ever wanted to get to him was several rows away in English class. We'd never spoken, but of course I heard the stories about his family. I know they're dangerous. I know he's dangerous. Vince never had a reason to notice me, anyway-until I inadvertently witnessed his first mob hit. His family doesn't believe in leaving witnesses alive, but Vince seems different. He knows the best thing he can do for me is stay away, but something keeps drawing us together. Despite knowing the risks of getting mixed up with him, I can't resist. Only problem is, Vince is a package deal-you don't get him without getting swept up in his family's dark games. Now entangled with a notorious Chicago crime family, will my life ever be mine again?

Book excerpt: You've met the Morelli family, now delve into the love story of Mateo's callous brother, Dante Morelli...Loving Dante was my original sin. They warned me of the slippery slope, the moral corruption, the outright debasement of the Morelli family. They warned me not to get involved. Not to love him.I didn't listen. I thought I would be his saving grace. I was a fool.Once upon a time, Dante Morelli was the source of my happiness, the powerful embrace which would always keep me safe and loved. Now, Dante Morelli is the source of every moment of pain, every moment of grief, every heart-breaking moment of my young life.Once, his love was my lifeblood. Now, his love is my prison. Once, I thought it might kill me to leave him. Now, I know he will never let me go.Warnings: This is a dark romance with a bad guy hero. This is also a comprehensive series, so you'll have a MUCH better time with Dante's story if you have read all previous Morelli family series books first. The author does NOT recommend trying to read this as a standalone if you haven't read the Morelli family series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adrian Palmetto. Mine is a name known by every lowlife in Chicago. Mateo Morelli's right hand man: problem-solver, hit man, chief strategist, confidante-whatever he needs, I'm his guy. Kinda funny, since I hate the bastard. At least, that's what I've told myself over the last five years, serving a man I consider despicable-a man I once considered my closest friend. It's what I had to do, if I wanted Elise. And I wanted Elise more than I've ever wanted anything in my godforsaken life.Thing is, I'm free now. I don't have to be Mateo's guy anymore. I paid the price for Elise's freedom and now I can start building a life with her. Only it's not that simple. Nothing ever is in this damn family. Elise carries emotional baggage from her own time served, and Mateo's in deep shit without me. You'd think I would've learned my lesson about the evils of Mateo's family at 8, when they ruined my life, or maybe even at 28, when they stole it. Now here I am, 33, faced with one final choice: do I escape this family once and for all, or do I dive back into the flames to save Mateo's ass one last time?**Recommended for readers 18+ due to violence. Book 3 of 4 in the Morelli Family Saga. NOT a standalone. None of these are standalones. Start with Accidental Witness or suffer the consequences! (The consequence is that you'll be really confused. No one will murder you or anything. But I don't advise it.)***** It's also strongly recommended that you read Irreparable Damage and Irreparable Lives prior to this one. This book has ALL the spoilers from that duet, so if you ever wanted to read it, you'll want to do that before this book. ***

Book excerpt: Senior year was off to a rough start: lube in my locker, panties on my front porch, unimaginative name-calling. See, I got a player suspended from the football team for harassing me, and in my small Texas town, you don’t mess with the football players—even if they mess with you first. I didn’t care if it was an unpopular thing to do; I stood up for myself... and in doing so, opened Pandora’s Box. I never dreamed I would attract the attention of locally worshiped star quarterback, Carter Mahoney. Never imagined his coveted attention would turn out to be such a nightmare. Beneath his carefully constructed façade lurks a monster, a predator looking for the perfect prey to play with. Now, since I’m the girl no one likes or believes, I guess I’m the perfect target for his dark games and twisted desires. After surviving my first encounter with his casual depravity, all I really want is for Carter to leave me alone. But all he seems to want is me.--publisher description.

Book excerpt: Hierarchy is a form of organisation of complex systems that rely on or produce a strong differentiation in capacity (power and size) between the parts of the system. It is frequently observed within the natural living world as well as in social institutions. According to the authors, hierarchy results from random processes, follows an intentional design, or is the result of the organisation which ensures an optimal circulation of energy for information. This book reviews ancient and modern representations and explanations of hierarchies, and compares their relevance in a variety of fields, such as language, societies, cities, and living species. It throws light on concepts and models such as scaling laws, fractals and self-organisation that are fundamental in the dynamics and morphology of complex systems. At a time when networks are celebrated for their efficiency, flexibility and better social acceptance, much can be learned about the persistent universality and adaptability of hierarchies, and from the analogies and differences between biological and social organisation and processes. This book addresses a wide audience of biologists and social scientists, as well as managers and executives in a variety of institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic pain costs the nation up to $635 billion each year in medical treatment and lost productivity. The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act required the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to enlist the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in examining pain as a public health problem. In this report, the IOM offers a blueprint for action in transforming prevention, care, education, and research, with the goal of providing relief for people with pain in America. To reach the vast multitude of people with various types of pain, the nation must adopt a population-level prevention and management strategy. The IOM recommends that HHS develop a comprehensive plan with specific goals, actions, and timeframes. Better data are needed to help shape efforts, especially on the groups of people currently underdiagnosed and undertreated, and the IOM encourages federal and state agencies and private organizations to accelerate the collection of data on pain incidence, prevalence, and treatments. Because pain varies from patient to patient, healthcare providers should increasingly aim at tailoring pain care to each person's experience, and self-management of pain should be promoted. In addition, because there are major gaps in knowledge about pain across health care and society alike, the IOM recommends that federal agencies and other stakeholders redesign education programs to bridge these gaps. Pain is a major driver for visits to physicians, a major reason for taking medications, a major cause of disability, and a key factor in quality of life and productivity. Given the burden of pain in human lives, dollars, and social consequences, relieving pain should be a national priority.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stemmatology studies aspects of textual criticism that use genealogical methods to analyse a set of copies of a text whose autograph has been lost. This handbook is the first to cover the entire field, encompassing both theoretical and practical aspects of traditional as well as modern digital methods and their history. As an art (ars), stemmatology’s main goal is editing and thus presenting to the reader a historical text in the most satisfactory way. As a more abstract discipline (scientia), it is interested in the general principles of how texts change in the process of being copied. Thirty eight experts from all of the fields involved have joined forces to write this handbook, whose eight chapters cover material aspects of text traditions, the genesis and methods of traditional "Lachmannian" textual criticism and the objections raised against it, as well as modern digital methods used in the field. The two concluding chapters take a closer look at how this approach towards texts and textual criticism has developed in some disciplines of textual scholarship and compare methods used in other fields that deal with "descent with modification". The handbook thus serves as an introduction to this interdisciplinary field.

Book excerpt: Over the years, I've watched Rafe Morelli charm every kind of beautiful woman out of her panties. Most of them are practical enough to hold onto their hearts, though; he doesn't want those. I am the only woman around who has managed to keep her panties out of Rafe's hands, but not her heart. It all began with a startling act of kindness--a twisted act of kindness, but what other kind can you expect from a bad guy? Rafe's much more than that, though, and I know I'm just what he needs. I also know a relationship is off-limits. Loving a Morelli isn't just a dangerous game--it can be a deadly one. I never wanted to align myself with the dark side, I never wanted to play any games, but no matter how much it derails my life, the only person I find myself wanting to serve is Rafe Morelli. Rafe isn't looking for love, and I'm not looking for trouble. The thing love and trouble have in common? Both have a way of finding you when you're least expecting it...Note: SUBMITTING IN VEGAS is not a standalone. This is a continuing-story trilogy, not three separate standalones.
