Book excerpt: Environmental Technologies Handbook provides environmental, health and safety professionals with a straightforward, easy-to-use reference guide to new and emerging pollution prevention and control technologies that will help them to meet regulatory obligations, increase sustainability, and ensure social responsibility. An international array of experts explain emerging and proven technologies for multi-media pollution and how they work, allowing readers to evaluate and choose technologies based on their needs and the technologies' cost and labor requirements. This book focuses on recent technology successes, including gasification, pyrolysis, electrochemical processes, photocatalysis, and advanced wastewater treatment technologies. Readers will find extensive coverage of the concepts of risk assessment to environmental media and the impact of advanced concepts of dose-response exposures to risk reduction practices. They will also find an explanation of the methodology and computation methods available for life cycle costing analyses and proper environmental cost accounting.

This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Environmental Technology Evaluation Center (EvTEC), a CERF Innovation Center. This verification report describes a field evaluation of the installation of a silt fence using the Tommy? Silt Fence Static Slicing Method and compares this method to traditional trenching methods. The slicing method has been used extensively over the past few years but has not undergone a true field application test by a third party. State Departments of Transportation and federal, state, and local environmental regulatory agencies have expressed a desire and, in some cases, a need, for baseline environmental data providing a general picture of performance and feasibility of the Tommy Slicing Method for silt fence installation and erosion control.

This book was released on 2006-10-30 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clean Air Act established a pair of programsâ€"known as New Source Review (NSR)â€"that regulate large stationary sources of air pollution, such as factories and electricity-generating facilities. Congress then asked the National Research Council to estimate the effects of NSR rule changes made in 2002 and 2003 in terms of the effects on emissions and human health, and changes in operating efficiency (including energy efficiency), pollution prevention, and pollution-control activities. New Source Review for Stationary Sources of Air Pollution provides insights into the potential effects of the rule changes on national emissions from the electric power industry. Although this book focuses on the 2002 and 2003 rules, its analytic framework applies to other possible changes in NSR and to other regulatory contexts. Helpful, in that it outlines the data-collection efforts needed to assess the impact of the NSR rules, the book recommends EPA and other government agencies undertake and sustain the recommended methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four volumes of the book series "Engineering Tools for Environmental Risk Management" deal with environmental management, assessment & monitoring tools, environmental toxicology and risk reduction technologies. This last volume focuses on engineering solutions usually needed for industrial contaminated sites, where nature’s self-remediation is inefficient or too slow. The success of remediation depends on the selection of an increasing number of conventional and innovative methods. This volume classifies the remedial technologies and describes the reactor approach to understand and manage in situ technologies similarly to reactor-based technologies. Technology types include physicochemical, biological or ecological solutions, where near-natural, sustainable remediation has priority. A special chapter is devoted to natural attenuation, where natural changes can help achieve clean-up objectives. Natural attenuation and biological and ecological remediation establish a serial range of technologies from monitoring only to fully controlled interventions, using ‘ just’ the natural ecosystem or sophisticated artificial living systems. Passive artificial ecosystems and biodegradation-based remediation – in addition to natural attenuation – demonstrate the use of these ‘green’ technologies and how engineering intervention should be kept at a minimum to limit damage to the environment and create a harmonious ecosystem. Remediation of sites contaminated with organic substances is analyzed in detail including biological and physicochemical methods. Comprehensive management of pollution by inorganic contaminants from the mining industry, leaching and bioleaching and acid mine drainage is studied in general and specifically in the case of an abandoned mine in Hungary where the innovative technology of combined chemical and phytostabilization has been applied. The series of technologies is completed by electrochemical remediation and nanotechnologies. Monitoring, verification and sustainability analysis of remediation provide a comprehensive overview of the management aspect of environmental risk reduction by remediation. This book series focuses on the state of knowledge about the environment and its conscious and structured application in environmental engineering, management and decision making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mosquitoes, Communities, and Public Health in Texas focuses on 87 known species of mosquitoes found throughout Texas. It includes information on the ecology, medical and public health importance, and biological diversity of each species. In addition, it provides detailed identification keys for both larval and adult stages of all mosquito genera and species known to occur in Texas, along a review of surveillance and control strategies. The expansion of invasive mosquitoes from other regions (including Mexico), together with climate change occurrences increase the likelihood for an increase in diseases, such as West Nile Virus, Yellow Fever, Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika. This unique work is the first unified reference and resource rich in mosquito information for medical entomologists, mosquito and vector control professionals, pest management professionals, biologists, environmentalists, wildlife professionals, government regulators, instructors of medical entomology and public health professionals who have disease or vector responsibilities, mosquito taxonomists, epidemiologists, entomology students, academia, pest control industry, and libraries, etc., with utility for medical, veterinary and health professionals. - Brings into one volume the previously fragmented or unavailable information on the species of mosquitoes found in Texas and neighboring states of Mexico - Provides a variety of audiences with key data on mosquito biology, distribution and how to identify each - Includes a geographic distribution map, habitat associations, and medical importance on Zika, West Nile virus, Dengue and Chikungunya for each species

Title is "very timely...needed NOW," according to one reviewer Covers a "controversial" but important topic, for which there is a lack of literature and hence guidance for those professionals affected by it Covers legislative background and gives insight into regulatory and technical matters such as measurement and control of fine particle emissions Combines the practical, theoretical, and regulatory areas of fine particulate monitoring, with "reference to the regulated community" Written by a recognized authority with over 30 years of pollution control experience
