Download or read book Neglected and Underutilized Crop Species for Sustainable Food and Nutritional Security: Prospects and Hidden Potential written by Omena Bernard Ojuederie and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global demand for food is rising as a result of increases in the global population as well as dietary changes. Furthermore, climate change exerts additional pressure on the food supply, adversely affecting sustainable food production. Increased temperatures and drought stresses coupled with the migration of pests limit crop yields and affect their nutritional quality. Many staple crops are unable to adapt to these changing climatic conditions. To achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nation to end hunger and promote good health and well-being, concerted efforts need to be made to enhance food production while mitigating the effects of climate change through the promotion of climate-smart agricultural practices and the utilization of neglected and underutilized crop species. These species can be highly nutritious and well-adapted to different agroecologies and climatic conditions, meaning that they offer the possibility of improving food and nutritional security.

Book Synopsis Genetic and Agro-Morphological Diversity and Genotype by Environment Interaction of Yield and Nutritional Quality Traits in Pearl Millet Germplasm from Sudan by : Elfadil M A Bashir
Download or read book Genetic and Agro-Morphological Diversity and Genotype by Environment Interaction of Yield and Nutritional Quality Traits in Pearl Millet Germplasm from Sudan written by Elfadil M A Bashir and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to its adaptation to extremely harsh environments, pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L) R. Br.) is one of the most important staple cereals cultivated in the arid and semi-arid tropics of Asia and Africa. In these regions pearl millet is mainly produced under low-input, rainfed conditions in traditional farming systems, where several constrains are affecting pearl millet production, such as inter-annual rainfall variability, pests, diseases, Striga and use of low yielding varieties. The majority of the human population in these regions is affected by nutritional deficiencies of essential minerals causing micronutrient malnutrition (so-called ‘hidden hunger’). Plant genetic resources provide basic materials for selection and improvement of crop productivity through the optimal design of breeding programs to meet food security needs of the world’s rapidly rising population. The advent of PCR-based molecular markers such as simple sequence repeats (SSRs) has created an opportunity for fine-scale genetic characterization of germplasm collections. Understanding the structure of diversity and the identification of distinct materials with complementary traits for recombination by crossing provides the foundation for effective and sustained pearl millet population breeding and synthetic and hybrid development, based on the concept of heterotic groups in this allogamous crop.

Book Synopsis Drought phenotyping in crops: From theory to practice by : Philippe Monneveux
Download or read book Drought phenotyping in crops: From theory to practice written by Philippe Monneveux and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This topic is a unique attempt to simultaneously tackle theoretical and practical aspects in drought phenotyping, through both crop-specific and cross-cutting approaches. It is designed for – and will be of use to – practitioners and postgraduate students in plant science, who are grappling with the challenging task of evaluating germplasm performance under different water regimes. In Part I, different methodologies are presented for accurately characterising environmental conditions, implementing trials, and capturing and analysing the information this generates, regardless of the crop. Part II presents the state-of-art in research on adaptation to drought, and recommends specific protocols to measure different traits in major food crops (focusing on particular cereals, legumes and clonal crops). The topic is part of the CGIAR Generation Challenge Programme’s efforts to disseminate crop research information, tools and protocols, for improving characterisation of environments and phenotyping conditions. The goal is to enhance expertise in testing locations, and to stimulate the development and use of traits related to drought tolerance, as well as innovative protocols for crop characterisation and breeding.

Book Synopsis Genomics of Plant Genetic Resources by : Roberto Tuberosa
Download or read book Genomics of Plant Genetic Resources written by Roberto Tuberosa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-08 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our lives and well being intimately depend on the exploitation of the plant genetic resources available to our breeding programs. Therefore, more extensive exploration and effective exploitation of plant genetic resources are essential prerequisites for the release of improved cultivars. Accordingly, the remarkable progress in genomics approaches and more recently in sequencing and bioinformatics offers unprecedented opportunities for mining germplasm collections, mapping and cloning loci of interest, identifying novel alleles and deploying them for breeding purposes. This book collects 48 highly interdisciplinary articles describing how genomics improves our capacity to characterize and harness natural and artificially induced variation in order to boost crop productivity and provide consumers with high-quality food. This book will be an invaluable reference for all those interested in managing, mining and harnessing the genetic richness of plant genetic resources.
Book Synopsis Genomic Designing of Climate-Smart Cereal Crops by : Chittaranjan Kole
Download or read book Genomic Designing of Climate-Smart Cereal Crops written by Chittaranjan Kole and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights modern methods and strategies to improve cereal crops in the era of climate change, presenting the latest advances in plant molecular mapping and genome sequencing. Spectacular achievements in the fields of molecular breeding, transgenics and genomics in the last three decades have facilitated revolutionary changes in cereal- crop-improvement strategies and techniques. Since the genome sequencing of rice in 2002, the genomes of over eight cereal crops have been sequenced and more are to follow. This has made it possible to decipher the exact nucleotide sequence and chromosomal positions of agroeconomic genes. Most importantly, comparative genomics and genotyping-by-sequencing have opened up new vistas for exploring available biodiversity, particularly of wild crop relatives, for identifying useful donor genes.
Book Synopsis Food Security and Climate Change by : Shyam Singh Yadav
Download or read book Food Security and Climate Change written by Shyam Singh Yadav and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the current state of food security and climate change, discusses the issues that are affecting them, and the actions required to ensure there will be enough food for the future. By casting a much wider net than most previously published books—to include select novel approaches, techniques, genes from crop diverse genetic resources or relatives—it shows how agriculture may still be able to triumph over the very real threat of climate change. Food Security and Climate Change integrates various challenges posed by changing climate, increasing population, sustainability in crop productivity, demand for food grains to sustain food security, and the anticipated future need for nutritious quality foods. It looks at individual factors resulting from climate change, including rising carbon emission levels, increasing temperature, disruptions in rainfall patterns, drought, and their combined impact on planting environments, crop adaptation, production, and management. The role of plant genetic resources, breeding technologies of crops, biotechnologies, and integrated farm management and agronomic good practices are included, and demonstrate the significance of food grain production in achieving food security during climate change. Food Security and Climate Change is an excellent book for researchers, scientists, students, and policy makers involved in agricultural science and technology, as well as those concerned with the effects of climate change on our environment and the food industry.
