Book excerpt: “All we have to do is to recognize God as being intimately present within us.” — Brother Lawrence Brother Lawrence’s seventeenth-century spiritual classic The Practice of the Presence of God showed how cultivating presence can be the salve to stress, anxiety, worry, and fear, all of which continue to plague us today. Now, in this contemporary complement to Brother Lawrence’s work, author and contemplative teacher Jim Heaney explains in clear, accessible language why presence is essential to connecting to and sustaining a vibrant inner life. Drawing on Christian scripture, spiritual luminaries from the Christian tradition, the social sciences, and personal experience, Choosing Presence thoroughly explores why this practice is so effective at alleviating compulsive negative thinking, and offers a practical guide to incorporating it into your own life. With an emphasis on action, each chapter includes: • A spiritual intention to help bring in stillness and connect with God’s spiritual energy • A step-by-step guided breathing practice • Three questions to help you gauge your progress Choosing Presence also includes a detailed question-and-answer section that will help you overcome common obstacles to practicing presence. The book’s free companion app, Practicing Presence—A Christian Way, will assist you in deepening your commitment.

Although the word shalom appears 550 times in the Scriptures and was a constant theme in Jesus' teachings, it is a neglected topic today. As a result, God's peace has been elusive to so many followers of Jesus. This book charts a course of shalom for you! As Greg Laurie writes in the foreword, since we are made in God's image, you could say we have been prewired for happiness. We are prewired for hope. We are prewired for peace. If you are longing for healing and wholeness, noted Bible scholar Jeremiah J. Johnston will help you discover how to · Unleash shalom in your life · Live and apply shalom in God's world · Protect your shalom in difficult times This uplifting book is also helpful for ministry leaders and everyone else who recognizes the church's incredible opportunity today to help individuals and families dealing with anxiety, worry, and mental pain. Let this be your guide into the peace that passes all understanding. Shalom! "This is more than surviving; we are offered the gift of truly flourishing."--SHEILA WALSH, author of Holding On When You Want to Let Go "In this reassuring meditation on Christian happiness... Johnston's mix of scholarly and uplifting notes will speak to solace seekers and their ministry leaders alike."--PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometime before the middle of the twelfth century, an anonymous English writer composed the Leges Edwardi, a treatise purporting to contain the laws that had been in force under the Anglo-Saxon King Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), cousin of William the Conqueror. The laws were said to have been spoken to William shortly after the Conquest by "English nobles who were wise men and learned in their law," recounting "the rules of their laws and customs" for the invading Norman king. When they had finished, the king wondered whether it might not be better for all of them to live under the law of his Viking ancestors; the English, however, protested that they preferred to live by their own preconquest laws. The king acquiesced, and thus, goes the story, were the laws of King Edward the Confessor authorized. Looking through the lens of this important—if spurious—treatise, God's Peace and King's Peace offers the first ground-level view of English law during the century in which the common law was born. Bruce R. O'Brien compares the Leges Edwardi to other memorials of legal policy and practice from before and after 1066, in both Normandy and England, and advances conclusions about the treatises' reliability on specific points of law. He also shows how the Laws of Edward the Confessor, taken as a record of English law at the conquest, came to be used as authoritative evidence behind the Magna Carta that the king was under the law, and how it was eventually declared a notorious forgery by seventeenth-century antiquaries and Enlightenment historians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those who choose the way of Jesus Christ, peace is not only possible but to be expected. Peace, in fact, is a part of the package deal of the Catholic faith, because the Lord Jesus himself is our peace. In one hundred short meditations, author Heidi Bratton leads women to consider how they can live out the peace that Christ promises: in their homes, finances, jobs, parishes, and in their relationships with their spouses, families, and children. Her real-life examples show us that peace can be lived in difficult and challenging circumstances. Each meditation ends with a heartfelt prayer. Even when our faith is strong, we can struggle with staying peaceful. This book is a constant reminder that peace is a gift from God, something that we can ask for and receive every day of our lives.

Book excerpt: When waiting on God stretches for months or years, we might begin to doubt His promises. Did I hear You correctly, God? Do You see what I’m going through? Why does this have to be so hard? In Wait and See, Wendy Pope draws on the life of King David to help us focus on the Person of our faith rather than the object of our wait; prepare for the future by participating in God’s work in the present; view God’s pauses as opportunities to know Him better; gain confidence in God’s plans, even during uncertain times; and step out of the security of the known to find peace in the unknown. How can we take every opportunity to focus on God and His beautiful future? This hands-on guidebook will show you how to transform a difficult season of waiting into a sweet season with God.

A chance happening on a grand scale, no, mankind is an incomprehensible, creative delight of God with a destiny that far exceeds mankinds ability to understand. Glimpses of mankinds destiny are fl eeting at best, but fragments are seen on occasion when spiritual eyes have been opened to the unlimited possibilities of an expanded God-inspired mind. We must grow our mind to know God as He reveals Himself to us. This is vital. Education and knowledge are essential for life in the world. This book is about peace. Peace is obtained through knowledge and understanding of the divine nature of God and doing as He directs so that we become like Him. Mankind has been created by God to assume responsibility for assisting God in the management of His creation.
