Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Right now melanin, the aromatic biopolymer and organic semiconductor that makes Black people black is worth over $380 a gram more than gold. In just a few short years, on August 13, 2020 the Red, Black and Green flag will be celebrated as the colors of all African people. We also know the song lyric "Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds," commonly associated with Bob Marley, actually originated with Marcus Garvey. “We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery, for though others may free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind.” Those are the words Marcus Garvey spoke in either October or November 1937. The place? Menelik Hall in Sydney, Nova Scotia. This selection of sayings of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey, provides an introduction to the mind of a man capable of speaking words into existence which continue to have a profound impact on those who hear them to this very day. Marcus Garvey was a journalist, editor, publisher, as well as founder, and President-General of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA.) This book serves as an introduction to the philosophy which made his ideas known worldwide. Notable among them is the phrase which has come to many sung as a paraphrased lyric by Bob Marley. Its organic power and compelling urge for a new mental state among the human race can not seriously be denied. This book is a distillation of Garvey thought. The product of years studying the words works and deeds of a man who left a legacy that is still so potent efforts continue to dissuade seekers of truth from his vision. Book excerpt: I've made all my choices freely in this life, but how I wish they were all perfect without errors. Only in the last fifteen years can I say I have chosen, not perfectly mind you, but wisely. All my choices are now founded upon reason and common sense and logic and a belief in an actual Creator, which is a philosophy called Deism. Unlike revealed religious beliefs that seek to isolate mankind and to sever the tie that binds one human to another, Deism never makes demands. Deists are instead individuals who choose to stand alone in their trust in the Creator. Paradise or Heaven, should there be such places, are reserved for religious believers. The rest of humanity? Deism seeks to unite mankind with a universal truth that all can accept not founded on a book called holy created by mankind to control mankind. Deism looks to the Cosmos, Nature, and the endlessness of the night's sky, each as a book to help guide mankind. Deism does not require a promise or a reward of Heaven or Paradise as an incentive to be a good and loving person; it is simply the right thing to do. We all shall see truth if there is anything to see in the by and by. Perhaps, we will simply go to a deep, dreamless sleep and know nothing more as a few souls believe? I really don't know what happens at the last moment; even so, I will maintain my trust in the Creator to the very end. I shall hold to reason and common sense until my time here is ended.

Book excerpt: At the heart of community development in under-developed communities, ghettos, and slums, is society's need to deal decisively with poverty, want, and need. South African author Dudu Sokhela has compacted cutting-edge techniques and strategies that can ensure sustainable urban-rural community development, based on the person-centered community development approach. Drawing from extensive knowledge and experience of grass roots progressive social change acquired at various nonprofit organizations, she presents a solid point of entry into the indigent community that is often characterized by poverty and inequalities. The book's information is presented right from the time the indigent community is entered. This allows readers to learn the values and beliefs that make up the community, as well as the delicate process of consultation, community participation, and the hindrances hampering development that are coupled with the prevalent inexperience and promotion of dependency by service providers. Profound inequalities and favoritism exist in the way resources are funded and distributed by those in power. There is also a lack of compliance in coordinating community programs and how the community can proceed in maintaining development once it has been started. Why Urban-Rural Under-Developed Communities Will Never Develop in South Africa is a must-read for those in the helping professions tasked with turning the tide of poverty in these communities in South Africa, like the Mooiplaas Informal Settlement in Centurion. This book can help bring to fruition new government strategies to regulate service providers funded by private organizations, and also aid those that promote dependency in such communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think magic belongs only on the stage or in the imagination of young children? This book will teach you to reconsider and experience again! The author, 30 years a creative and TV scriptwriter, stumbled into becoming a healer when, totally unexpectedly, the awakened energy in the palms of her hands roused a terminally-ill cancer patient from an unresponsive state. The narrative of extraordinary events in her life can only be described as magical and is captured in the premise of this book: Magic is available to all of us. It is our birthright, calling to us during times of great hardship and difficulty. When we allow it into our lives, amazing transformations can and do take place. Throughout the book there are many examples and testimonials to support the sometimes hard-to-believe scenarios of a magical existence. Included in this book is a practical self-help 'Allowing Handbook' divided into two parts. The first section (Magic) describes sixteen magical elements of the universe – fundamentals that can positively transform our perception of the outer world and bring peace and harmony to our inner existence. The second section (Brown Stuff) lists seventeen different scenarios that may resonate with the reader and the challenges they may be facing right now in their life. Within each of these different sections are dynamic tips and techniques that are designed to help shift the Brown Stuff, resolve difficulties, and get to the Magic. Many testimonials and real-life examples illustrate the points made.

Book excerpt: We all have unconscious reactive programs that determine many of our thoughts and decisions. Quick rationalizations provide obvious but untrue "reasons" for our beliefs and actions, biases prevent us from examining new ideas, and desires push us to win arguments rather than to search for truth. We are led around by these parts of our minds that we're only vaguely aware of. But just how obedient are we to those hidden masters? Perhaps more than we know. Beyond Mental Slavery examines the many ways in which we become trapped in mental processes that limit the clarity and effectiveness of our thinking and decision-making. Using examples from science, business, the arts, and life in general, the basic problems - and solutions - are spelled out in simple language. Stories and research are used to show how the mind works - or doesn't work. More than just a look at the flaws of our minds, this book is also a how-to guide for clearer, more powerful, and more useful thinking.

Book excerpt: We are both oppressed and an oppressor in this world. And this definitely has to stop! The Way enlightens us that we have to find a way to help humanity become more humane to each other and create a heaven on earth through non-inclusive principles. It’s all about respect—giving and receiving it. The book speaks of liberating one’s self from becoming a victim as well as freeing one’s self from becoming an oppressor. Being victimized by society’s laws or being oppressed by others who may be more powerful should not be a hinder to become “the bigger man.” We should be an inspiration for change and be a person who finds ways for a resolution than being a part of the problem. The Way is a life-inspiring must-read book. Read on and spark humanity’s hope, ignite humanity’s faith, and be the change that the world needs to have.

Book excerpt: Certain works of Romantic drama&—Prometheus Unbound, Cain, The Cenci&—have received a good deal of critical attention, by as a whole the genre has been misunderstood and only slightly considered. Alan Richardson redresses a tradition of critical neglect by considering the works of Romantic drama not as failed stage-plays (&"closet drama&") but as constituting a new, distinctively Romantic genre. In turning from the contemporary stage&—which was marked by spectacle, rant, and melodrama&—the Romantic poets developed an altogether new kind of drama, one which they hoped could recapture the intensity of Shakespearean tragedy that Neoclassical writers had scarcely approached. Richardson calls this genre (after Byron) &"mental theater,&" both because its works are concerned with portraying the development of self-consciousness and because it fuses the subjectivity of lyric with the interaction of dramatic poetry. Moreover, these works are addressed directly to the mind of the reader, bypassing the medium of stage representation. This study places Romantic self-consciousness in a fundamentally new light. Far from uncritically pursuing an egoistic stance, the Romantics criticize through their poetic drama the attempt to attain psychic autonomy. The protagonists of Romantic drama are seduced by their antagonists into entering such a condition only to find in it a hollow, deathly isolation. They find in self-consciousness not their promised liberation, but a tormented fate modeled after that of their betrayers. Wordsworth, Byron, and Shelley delineate the limitations of &"Romantic&" self-consciousness in their works of mental theater; Shelley alone envisions their transcendence through his radical transformation of consciousness in the conclusion to Prometheus Unbound. This interpretation of mental theater will lead to a new evaluation of the Romantics as dramatic poets. It brings back to critical attention neglected but challenging works such as Byron's Heaven and Earth and Beddoes's Death's Jest-Book, and provides vital new perspectives on undervalued texts like Wordsworth's The Borderers and Byron's Manfred and Cain. It qualifies decades of critical speculation on &"Romantic individualism&" and &"Romantic consciousness,&" and helps return the ideal of imaginative sympathy to the central position held in the critical writings of the Romantics themselves. Finally, in emphasizing the dramatic quality of mental theater, it challenges the still-prevalent view that Romantic poetry in inherently lyrical in character. Scholars concerned with English Romantic drama, Romantic literature, and the Romantic period as well as English drama will find this work to be an important contribution to their understanding.

The book is dedicated to the Nationalist Movement in India, World War I, and the industrial revolution of the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Tagore viewed nationalism as an alien component of the Indian culture that was instead implanted by the Western political thought that belonged to the Indian political tradition. He believed that nationalism leads to greed, maximization of profit, an inhuman application of science, and war. Therefore, he praised countries that didn't involve in WWI and pertained to their high culture.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1951, is a Postscript to Bernard Shaw: His Life and Personality—Hesketh Pearson’s biography of Bernard Shaw, published in 1942, which became the standard work on Bernard Shaw. It was unique among other books on the same subject because Shaw himself gave every possible help to his biographer, allowing him to quote whatever he wished from published and unpublished correspondence. Shaw answered every question put to him and willingly revealed a great deal of information about his own life that had not been available hitherto. G.B.S. A Postscript continues the story from the point at which the biography left off. It describes the intimate discussions and not infrequent but always friendly disagreements which took place while it was bring written. Hesketh Pearson was in constant touch with Shaw throughout the last decade of his life, and, with Shaw’s knowledge, kept the biography up to date, noting down immediately after their occurrence accounts of their many discussions. Shaw subsequently recalled many things about his past which had previously escaped him, and so many fresh sidelights on Shaw and his contemporaries are included here. Not the least illuminating feature of this book is the obituary which Shaw himself contributed.
