Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2009, the United States, Japan and South Korea, like many industrial countries, initiated accelerated vehicle retirement (AVR) programs. Vehicles manufactured by Japanese and South Korean companies made both domestically and abroad were top performers in the U.S. AVR programs, and were also known as the "cash for clunkers" program. However, few U.S.-made vehicles were sold in comparable programs in these two countries, leading to questions about the disparity. This book examines automobile trade with South Korea and Japan, the second and fifth largest auto producing countries, in the world.

Download or read book Retirement in Japan and South Korea written by Masa Higo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses reforms to retirement policies in Japan and South Korea, especially in the context of rapid population ageing. A defining feature of the labour markets and workplaces in these two nations, and the lives of workers and families, is involuntary retirement at relatively young ages. The book explains past developments and recent reforms of retirement policies both in the two countries, as well as in a cross-national comparative manner. At the core of the book is an examination of the social, economic and political conflicts around retirement, such as between younger and older workers, between employers and governments, and between employers and workers. The policy recommendations offered apply not only to Japan and South Korea, but also to other nations such as China. The volume is of value particularly for those interested in labour markets and workplaces, population ageing and contemporary East Asia, in addition to those studying retirement and pensions. Policymakers, business leaders, worker organizations, researchers and students will benefit from the insights about the past, present and future of retirement.

Book Synopsis Green Keynesianism and the Global Financial Crisis by : Kyla Tienhaara
Download or read book Green Keynesianism and the Global Financial Crisis written by Kyla Tienhaara and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely accepted that limiting climate change to 2°C will require substantial and sustained investments in low-carbon technologies and infrastructure. However, the dominance of market fundamentalism in economic thinking for the past three decades has meant that governments have generally viewed large spending programs as politically undesirable. In this context, the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) represented a huge opportunity for proponents of public investment in environmental projects or "Green Keynesianism". This book examines the experience of Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, and the United States with Green Keynesian stimulus programs in the wake of the GFC. Unfortunately, on the whole, the cases do not provide much optimism for proponents of Green Keynesianism. Much less funding than was originally allocated to green programs was actually spent in areas that would produce an environmental benefit. Furthermore, a number of projects had negligible or even detrimental environmental outcomes. While the book also documents several success stories, the research indicates overall that more careful consideration of the design of green stimulus programs is needed. In addition to concrete policy advice, the book provides a broader vision for how governments could use Keynesian policies to work toward creating an "ecological state". This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental politics, environmental economics, political economy, and sustainable development.
Book Synopsis Retirement, Work and Pensions in Ageing Korea by : Jae-Jin Yang
Download or read book Retirement, Work and Pensions in Ageing Korea written by Jae-Jin Yang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even among the four Asian tigers, with their economic miracles during the past several decades that allowed them to join the ranks of the developed nations, South Korea is extraordinary. As significant as its economic progress, from a dirt poor and devastated nation in the 1960s, is South Korea’s emerging welfare state. Although established in a short time, and still immature in some aspects, its unique East-Asian model now faces a population that is aging at an unprecedented rate. This book introduces readers to the impact of demographic changes in Korea, particularly the impact of these on work, retirement and pensions; and as importantly, provides an explanation for the reforms of public policy in these domains. The chapters provide an up-to-date assessment of aging, retirement, and pension policies in South Korea and give valuable insights into the diverse aspects of the unprecedented rapid aging. The theme of this volume, which brings together the foremost Korean scholars and experts, is how rapid demographic change in Korea has been a central factor in income security policy for the elderly, as well as workplace policies.
