Book excerpt: We estimate the academic benefits to college students living on campus and investigate why they may perform better in school. This paper addresses two channels to explain why living on campus may improve academic performance. First, we examine whether on-campus students are more likely to take advantage of university provided resources (libraries, tutors, computer technology, university sponsored extracurricular activities, etc) than off-campus students. Secondly, we examine whether peer influences and interactions, including collaborative studying with friends and/or classmates and engagement in drug and alcohol consumption. Instrumental variables are used to account for the likely endogeneity of students' living decisions. We find evidence that living on campus causes an increase in student performance while they are living on campus, and in subsequent semesters even if they later move off campus. We identify significant peer-effect channels to explain why students that have lived on campus in the past perform better than others, but largely fail to identify channels explaining why students should immediately perform better while they live on campus.

More specifically, what effect does being involved in residence hall governments have on today's college student? The purpose of this study was to find out who are involved in residence hall governments; why do they become involved in residence hall government; what have been the benefits of on-campus living; and finally, is there a perceived difference in the definitions of a "dorm" and a "residence hall"? The subjects of this study were delegates attending the PACURH '88 conference at San Diego State University during November 4-6, 1988. Each subject completed a 51 item questionnaire designed to obtain background information. The instrument consisted of four parts: personal information, extent of extra-curricular involvement, reasons for initial involvement, and affect. The data were analyzed in order to show relationships between the different items on the questionnaire. Of the 288 questionnaires distributed, 243 were returned and 232 were found to be usable--providing an 80.5 percent usable rate of return. Results indicated that personal factors such as "having a voice in the decision making process", "making a difference in other students' lives", or "meeting people or making friends" played a greater role in the initial involvement than other individuals such as "friends who were involved" or "residence life staff". A majority of the students believed that living on campus has facilitated their growth and development and many believe that living on campus has exposed them to much more than if they had lived off campus. Finally, results indicated that a majority of the students believe that there is a difference between a "dorm" and a "residence hall."

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Living on campus has long been an important part of many students' collegiate experience. Most research describing the benefits of living on campus was conducted in the 1960s and 1970s and was based upon students living in double rooms on double loaded corridors with community bathrooms. In recent years, the style of residence hall buildings has changed from these traditional rooms to suite and apartment-style housing offering more privacy and greater amenities to students. This study sought to examine how first year students living in three different types of residence hall environments differ on measures of social and academic integration, academic performance, involvement, and retention from the first to second year. One hundred and ninety one first year students living in three different types of residence halls (traditional, suite-style, and apartment-style) completed the Institutional Integration Scale during spring 2006. Students also gave permission for their GPAs and enrollment information to be obtained from the Registrar's Office. Results indicated that there were no significant differences in the social and academic integration, academic performance, involvement, or persistence among students living in these three different types of residence halls. While this study did not point to statistically significant differences, care must be taken in generalizing this finding to other settings due to the limited sample size used in this study. Suggestions for further research in this area are provided.

An analysis of housing and admissions data from Brigham Young University (BYU) reveals that living on campus has a positive impact on freshman students' GPAs when compared to alternative living arrangements off campus. In particular, a series of multiple regressions show that on average living on campus yields 0.09 higher GPA than living off campus. In addition to researching the general effects of on-campus housing versus off-campus housing and living at home, this paper discusses how housing affects specific student groups' academic performance. Some of the groups analyzed in this report are international students, racial minorities, first-generation college students, students from a low socio-economic background, and students who go on academic warning after their first semester. The specific housing for these groups vary and are discussed in the sections VI and VII (the results and discussion sections).

Book excerpt: The influence of a college students living environment has been under investigation for many years. The purpose of this study was to analyze college student living environment factors that influenced college success at a mid-west metropolitan university. To narrow the definition of college success, this researcher specifically focused on retention, academic study habits, and student satisfaction. This researcher identified three groups of students that lived in different living environments including on-campus, a hybrid on-campus/off-campus, and an off-campus arrangement. A sample of each group was asked to participate in a telephone survey. Due to a low participation rate of subjects the small sample size made the study statistically invalid to generalize over the total student population. But the responses that were received from of the survey showed many interesting trends. These trends indicated that students living in on-campus environments were most involved and active in college activities. The students that lived in the hybrid environment were the second most involved and active group, and the off-campus group was the least involved or active. Other trends worth noting indicated that students living off-campus worked more hours at off-campus jobs than those students that lived on-campus. Students living off-campus were found to have a slightly higher grade point average than the on-campus students but on-campus students reported higher retention rates and graduation rates from the midwest university that their off-campus counterparts. Based on the findings of this study this researcher would make three recommendations for first year college students and higher education professionals. First, university officials need to emphasize the value of the on-campus housing option to increase student involvement in college activities. Second, universities need to develop programs for off-campus students to get them involved. Thirdly, universities need to open more on-campus employment opportunities for off-campus students. This would create opportunities for off-campus students to get more involved on campus. In closing, this researcher recommends further studies be done to investigate the value of hybrid on-campus/ off-campus student living arrangements. There are many possible benefits that can be derived from this kind of student housing if it is utilized properly.
