Book excerpt: With an ever-increasing number of non-traditional students enrolling each year, the importance of ensuring their academic success falls primarily on the higher education institutions (HEIs). Each institution has its recipe for success and mostly consists of a student success office to assist when non-traditional students begin to show signs of markers for being at-risk. The reactive approach of waiting for students to show signs of struggle is missing the larger picture. The researcher utilized quantitative correlative and predictive correlative studies to determine if a direct correlation existed between non-traditional students’ perceived sense of belonging, which is at the core of inclusion, and their academic success. The Yorke Belongingness Survey in Higher Education (YBS) was given to both traditional and non-traditional undergraduate students at a rural private university in West Texas with several campuses nationwide within the United States. The class size was 298 students with a 48.3% return rate on survey (n=41 traditional, n=87 traditional). IBM SPSS statistical software was used to analyze the data. A t test and bivariate regression analysis were performed to determine a correlation between traditional and non-traditional students’ sense of belonging and academic success. The researcher was not able to reject the null hypotheses for the t test or the bivariate regression analysis due to a small effect size. The direct correlation between a higher sense of belonging and higher academic achievement could be a catalyst for programmatic reform.
Book Synopsis Meeting the Needs of Nontraditional Undergraduate Students by : Babb, Stephanie

This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nontraditional students are a rapidly growing population in universities and educational institutions. These students require specialized solutions and considerations as they face a number of difficulties traditional students do not. Further study is needed to truly comprehend this population’s needs and challenges and to develop and implement institutional-level changes to reduce their rate of attrition and increase their academic success. Meeting the Needs of Nontraditional Undergraduate Students has the potential to impact the field of adult higher education and nontraditional students by advancing and further honing already identified differences between nontraditional and traditional students. The book also considers tools and techniques to address these students’ requirements to meet their educational goals. Covering topics such as gender, stressors, and flexible learning, this reference work is ideal for administrators, school faculty, academicians, scholars, practitioners, instructors, and students.
Book Synopsis Nontraditional Students' Academic Success Experiences at a Large Public University in the American South by : Megan Elizabeth Russell
Download or read book Nontraditional Students' Academic Success Experiences at a Large Public University in the American South written by Megan Elizabeth Russell and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article explored the academic experiences of nontraditional students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. For the purposes of this study students were deemed to be nontraditional if they met one of the following characteristics: had delayed enrollment into postsecondary education; attended college part-time; worked full time; were financially independent for financial aid purposes; had dependents other than a spouse; were a single parent; and/or were a GED recipient (NCES, n.d.). The researcher sought to justify the importance of gleaning additional information regarding different components of the learning processes and academic experiences in which nontraditional students were engaged in throughout their educational endeavor. Furthermore, it was the researcher’s hope that this study would add to the body of research that already exists on the academic side of nontraditional students’ journey to a bachelor’s degree. This article specifically addresses the experiences of nontraditional students at a large public university in the South.

This study will look at the academic success of nontraditional students at Minnesota West Community and Technical College in online science courses. The nontraditional students in this study are students 21 years of age or older who have been out of a secondary school setting for at least three years, students without these qualifications will not be included. Original research will be executed by surveying nontraditional students at Minnesota West Community and Technical College. Other factors effecting students' academic success to be investigated include instructional strategies, retention of nontraditional students, and students' sense of community. Review of literature on these topics will also be used to understand the results of the original research. The results of the research along with the information found in literature will show that nontraditional students are successful in online science courses, when the key factors are present in their education experience"--Abstract.

Download or read book Late Bloomers written by Rich Karlgaard and published by Crown. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking exploration of how finding one's way later in life can be an advantage to long-term achievement and happiness. “What Yogi Berra observed about a baseball game—it ain't over till it's over—is true about life, and [Late Bloomers] is the ultimate proof of this. . . . It’s a keeper.”—Forbes We live in a society where kids and parents are obsessed with early achievement, from getting perfect scores on SATs to getting into Ivy League colleges to landing an amazing job at Google or Facebook—or even better, creating a start-up with the potential to be the next Google, Facebook or Uber. We see coders and entrepreneurs become millionaires or billionaires before age thirty, and feel we are failing if we are not one of them. Late bloomers, on the other hand, are under-valued—in popular culture, by educators and employers, and even unwittingly by parents. Yet the fact is, a lot of us—most of us—do not explode out of the gates in life. We have to discover our passions and talents and gifts. That was true for author Rich Karlgaard, who had a mediocre academic career at Stanford (which he got into by a fluke) and, after graduating, worked as a dishwasher and night watchman before finding the inner motivation and drive that ultimately led him to start up a high-tech magazine in Silicon Valley, and eventually to become the publisher of Forbes magazine. There is a scientific explanation for why so many of us bloom later in life. The executive function of our brains doesn’t mature until age twenty-five, and later for some. In fact, our brain’s capabilities peak at different ages. We actually experience multiple periods of blooming in our lives. Moreover, late bloomers enjoy hidden strengths because they take their time to discover their way in life—strengths coveted by many employers and partners—including curiosity, insight, compassion, resilience, and wisdom. Based on years of research, personal experience, interviews with neuroscientists, psychologists, and countless people at different stages of their careers, Late Bloomers reveals how and when we achieve our full potential. Praise for Late Bloomers “The underlying message that we should ‘consider a kinder clock for human development’ is a compelling one.”—Financial Times “Late Bloomers spoke to me deeply as a parent of two millennials and as a coach to many new college grads (the children of my friends and associates). It’s a bracing tonic for the anxiety they are swimming through, with a facts-based approach to help us all calm down.”—Robin Wolaner, founder of Parenting magazine
