Book excerpt: The smallest things can change the entire course of our lives forever. For Daniel, all he'd ever known was pain and loneliness. Between abusive foster homes and constant bullying at school, he stayed in a constant state of fear, always starved for affection. For Luther, Daniel's lifelong bully, his life was filled with needless violence to fill a hole he couldn't explain. Luther's absent parents and cold upbringing left him trapped in his own façade as an emotionless shell. When unfortunate circumstances bring these two together, and Luther becomes protector rather than tormentor, neither boy will ever be the same. A toxic, dangerous, secret relationship blooms. Daniel is plunged into a life based on actually living, not just surviving. Luther must learn how to feel and process other emotions, rather than just rage. With threats around every corner, things are far from easy. Between worst fears, betrayals, fistfights, and a new monster altogether, Luther and Daniel go through hell and back. Will they both make it out alive, or will one forever be lost without the other?

Book excerpt: At the height of her journalism career, more than one million households across the country knew her name and her face. Her reportage on human suffering and triumph captivated viewers, and with it Vanessa Govender shot to fame as one of the first female Indian television news reporters in South Africa. Always chasing the human angle of any news story, Govender made a name for herself by highlighting stories that included the grief of a mother clutching a packet filled with the fragments of the broken bones of her children after they'd been hacked to death by their own father, and another story where she celebrated the feisty spirit of a little girl who was dying of old age, while holding onto dreams that would never be realised. Yet Govender, a champion for society's downtrodden, was hiding a shocking story of her own. In Beaten But Not Broken, she finally opens up about her deepest secret - one that so nearly ended her career in broadcast journalism before it had barely kicked off. She was a rookie reporter at the SABC in 1999. He was a popular radio disc jockey, the darling of the SABC's Lotus FM, a radio station catering to nearly half a million Indian people across South Africa. They were the perfect pair, or so it seemed. And if anyone suspected the nature of the abusive relationship, Govender says, she doesn't believe they knew the full extent of the horror that the popular DJ was inflicting on this intrepid journalist. The bruising punches, the cracking slaps, and the relentless episodes filled with beatings, kicking and strangling were as ferocious as the emotional and verbal abuse he hurled at her. No one would know the brutal and graphic details of Govender's story ... until now. In Beaten But Not Broken, this Indian woman does the unthinkable, maybe even the unforgiveable, in breaking the ranks of a close-knit conservative community to speak out about her five-year-long hell in this abusive relationship. Her story also lays bare her heart-breaking experiences as a victim of childhood bullying and being ostracised by some in her community for being a dark-skinned Indian girl. Govender tells a graphic story of extreme abuse, living with the pain, and ultimately of how she was saved by her own relentless fighting spirit to find purpose and love. This is a story of possibilities and hope; it is a story of a true survivor.

Bent, Bruised, Abused, but Not Broken: The Susan Dealy Story is a candid account of the author’s often tumultuous life, including her twenty years of service in the Canadian Armed Forces, where she suffered appalling sexual, emotional, and physical abuse, as well as being the victim of several online romance scams that diminished both her finances and her trust. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From intimate relationships to global politics, Sarah Schulman observes a continuum: that inflated accusations of harm are used to avoid accountability. Illuminating the difference between Conflict and Abuse, Schulman directly addresses our contemporary culture of scapegoating. This deep, brave, and bold work reveals how punishment replaces personal and collective self-criticism, and shows why difference is so often used to justify cruelty and shunning. Rooting the problem of escalation in negative group relationships, Schulman illuminates the ways cliques, communities, families, and religious, racial, and national groups bond through the refusal to change their self-concept. She illustrates how Supremacy behavior and Traumatized behavior resemble each other, through a shared inability to tolerate difference. This important and sure to be controversial book illuminates such contemporary and historical issues of personal, racial, and geo-political difference as tools of escalation towards injustice, exclusion, and punishment, whether the objects of dehumanization are other individuals in our families or communities, people with HIV, African Americans, or Palestinians. Conflict Is Not Abuse is a searing rejection of the cultural phenomenon of blame, cruelty, and scapegoating, and how those in positions of power exacerbate and manipulate fear of the "other" to achieve their goals. Sarah Schulman is a novelist, nonfiction writer, playwright, screenwriter, journalist and AIDS historian, and the author of eighteen books. A Guggenheim and Fulbright Fellow, Sarah is a Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at the City University of New York, College of Staten Island. Her novels published by Arsenal include Rat Bohemia, Empathy, After Delores, and The Mere Future. She lives in New York. Book excerpt: Eleven-year-old Erin Merryn's life was transformed on the night she was sexually abused by her cousin, someone she loved and trusted. As the abuse continued, and as she was forced to see her abuser over and over again in social situations, she struggled with self-doubt, panic attacks, nightmares and the weight of whether or not to tell her terrible secret. It wasn't until a traumatic series of events showed her the cost of silence that she chose to speak out-in the process destroying both her family and the last of her innocence. Through her personal diary, written during the years of her abuse, Erin Merryn shares her journey through pain and confusion to inner strength and, ultimately, forgiveness. Raw, powerful and unflinchingly honest, Stolen Innocence is the inspiring story of one girl's struggle to become a woman, and a bright light on the pain and devastation of abuse. Stolen Innocence is written with conviction and clarity. [Erin Merryn] doesn't hold back, and I respect her honesty and openness...By the end of the book, I thought I was reading passages from a much older adult than a high school senior. Erin has grown into a strong, wise, intelligent, perceptive, spiritual, caring adult." —Susan Reedquist, The Children's Advocacy Center

Book excerpt: For fourteen years, Jayne Senior tried to help girls from Rotherham who had been groomed, raped, tortured, pimped and threatened with violence by sex traffickers. As the manager of Risky Business, which was set up to work with vulnerable teens, she heard heartbreaking and shocking stories of abuse and assiduously kept notes and details of the perpetrators, passing information on to the authorities in the belief that they would do something. Eventually, when she lost hope that the authorities would take action against the gangs she had identified as the abusers, she became a whistleblower for The Times investigative reporter Andrew Norfolk. Now, in her powerful memoir Broken and Betrayed, she describes a life spent working to protect Rotherham's girls, the pressure put on her to stop rocking the boat, and why she risked prison in the hope that she could help end the appalling child exploitation in the town.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the personal story of a Christian marriage that turned into a life of abuse and domestic violence - a personal story full of difficulties in a relationship gone wrong. Trusting in God and honoring the marriage vow, yet I could not believe the reality of what it had become. I could not believe that I was 'sleeping with the enemy'. Being brought up in a traditional church, I was extensively taught the word of God and how to love and care for your spouse. My mother taught me how to trust God, no matter the circumstance. She taught me how to hide in the secret place of the Most High. In viewing the Christian life, being patterned after the life of Jesus Christ our Savior, there are those who appear to be something on the outside, but they live another life at home behind closed doors. In our Christian circle they may look well put together especially in the church or Christian surroundings. They appear spiritually mature, but behind the window of their soul resides a carnal-minded individual. They pray eloquently, participate in deep theological discussions and reference scriptures to support their thoughts or insights. They may even know how to expound the word of God in Greek and Hebrew. They host conferences or are great Sunday school teachers, or just a lay member with no particular spiritual office. On the outside, their appearance is deceiving - oh if walls could talk! Abuse is not only in the church, it's worldwide. It has no color, no educational level, no nationality, no financial status, in fact, no particular boundaries in life. It does not discriminate. However; to my surprise, it is prevalent in the body of Christ. I feel like Apostle Paul when he said, "these things should not be." Victims are in choir stands, on the Usher Board; even in the pulpit - yes unfortunately abusers are in the church. Victims are usually abused for many years, but are too afraid to let someone know because -others are not supposed to know. I was that victim. I searched so many times for direction and answers from God. My life was sold out for Christ, yet at the end of the day I was still a victim. I went through this abuse, but I don't encourage anyone to go through what I had to go through. That was my cross to carry. I was ignorant to the fact that God never intended for anyone to be in bondage or live in an environment of fear. Fear is torment and binding, keeping you from the destiny that God has intended for your life. In Proverbs 18:22, if God gives you a wife that brings favor and blessing, ask yourself, "Would God approve of His favor being abused in any situation?" It is so very important to educate the body of Christ, to educate them about domestic violence in the church. This is not a popular subject in the church, but it's a way of life that some are hid in. I have found that some of the abusers are carrying the titles of Apostle, Pastor, Deacon, and so forth in the church which have been abusing their spouses for years. God, in these last days, is exposing and bringing such actions to the light. This book is in no way intended to promote divorce, but is intended to be used as a help source. It is intended as a help for those who are hiding behind the embarrassment and fear of controlling silence. It's time for those in the body of Christ not to be silent anymore. God is ready to deliver you from being a victim to becoming the victor you already are!

Book excerpt: "A beacon of truth and wisdom for the abused and a help in their healing." --Scot McKnight and Laura Barringer, authors of A Church Called Tov "Reading this book . . . will change you forever, for the better." --Rachael Denhollander, speaker, victim advocate, and author of What Is a Girl Worth? "Sincerely thoughtful, incredibly practical, and truly compassionate book on abusive systems and the consequences of cover-ups." --Christina Edmondson, PhD, cohost of Truth's Table podcast "Am I the only one who sees this--am I just imagining things? Is something wrong with me . . . or could this be abuse?" Maybe you don't know for sure: all you know is something feels off when you think about a certain relationship or interaction with an institution or organization. You feel alone and confused--but calling it "abuse" feels extreme and unsettling, a label for what happens to other people but not you. Yet you can't shake the feeling: something's not right. In his debut book, researcher and advocate Wade Mullen introduces us to the groundbreaking world of impression management--the strategies that individuals and organizations utilize to gain power and cover up their wrongdoings. Mullen reveals a pattern that accompanies many types of abuse, almost as if abusers are somehow reading from the same playbook. If we can learn to decode these evil methods--if we can learn the language of abuse--we can help stop the cycle and make abusers less effective at accomplishing destruction in our lives. Something's Not Right will help you to identify and describe tactics that were previously unidentifiable and indescribable, and give you the language you need to move toward freedom and create a safer future for yourself and others.
