Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abundance and Distribution of Zooplankton in Hawaiian Waters, 1955-56 The catches from the three-net hauls revealed a greater abundance of zoo plankton in the uppermost layer than in deeper water regardless of the time of sampling, Differences existed between windward and leeward areas of the island of Oahu at certain times, but one area did not have consistently greater volumes of zooplankton than the other area throughout the seasons. The significance of seasonal differences was masked by the possibility of annual fluctuations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zooplankton Abundance in Hawaiian Waters, 1953-54 During the period April December 1953, four permanent stations between Oahu and Molokai were visited at approximately weekly intervals with sampling of zooplankton (at three of the stations only), temperature, phosphate, and salinity, for the purpose of following detailed changes in the environment associated with the Opening of the skipjack season in the early sum mer months and the decline in the catch during the fall. It was assumed that these selected 10 cations would yield data fairly representative of conditions throughout Hawaiian waters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seasonal and Areal Distribution of Zooplankton in Coastal Waters of the Gulf of Maine, 1967 and 1968 The abundance, composition, and seasonal variations in the distribution of zoo plankton are described. Thirteen taxa were among the more abundant zooplankters in the samples: 6 were holoplanktonic, and 7 were meroplanktonic. Copepods were the dominant zooplankters during all seasons in both years. Zooplankton volumes were highest in the western area (cape Arm to Cape Elizabeth), intermediate in the central area (cape Elizabeth to Mt. Desert Island), and lowest in the eastern sector (mt. Desert Island to Machias Bay). The differences in zooplankton abundance among areas and between years were caused by variations in the timing of vernal warming and coastal differences in water column stability and circulation. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seasonal and Areal Distribution of Zooplankton in Coastal Waters of the Gulf of Maine, 1964 A description is given of the composition and seasonal variations of zooplankton in coastal waters of the Gulf of Maine during 1964, and comparisons are made between 1963 and 1964. Twelve zooplankton groups (major taxa) were represented in the samples. Five occurred as holoplanktonic forms and seven were mero planktonic. Copepods were the dominant zooplankters during all seasons. Zoo plankton volumes for both years followed similar areal trends. Mean annual volumes were highest in the western area (cape Ann, Mass., to Cape Elizabeth, Maine); moderate in the central area (cape Elizabeth to Mt. Desert Island, Maine); and low in the eastern sector (mt. Desert Island to Machias Bay, Maine). Zooplankton volumes were generally lower in 1964 than in 1963. Seasonal and annual variations in abundance of zooplankters are discussed in relation to hydrography. Local hydrography appears to influence the abundance and distribution of coastal zoo plankters more directly then does the cyclonic-eddy system of the Gulf proper. No other text presents analytical, quantitative, and statistical ecological information in an equally accessible style. Reflecting the way ecologists actually practice, the book emphasizes the role of experiments in testing ecological ideas and discusses many contemporary and controversial problems related to distribution and abundance. Throughout the book, Krebs thoroughly explains the application of mathematical concepts in ecology while reinforcing these concepts with research references, examples, and interesting end-of-chapter review questions. Thoroughly updated with new examples and references, the book now features a new full-color design and is accompanied by an art CD-ROM for instructors. The field package also includes The Ecology Action Guide, a guide that encourages readers to be environmentally responsible citizens, and a subscription to The Ecology Place (www.ecologyplace.com), a web site and CD-ROM that enables users to become virtual field ecologists by performing experiments such as estimating the number of mice on an imaginary island or restoring prairie land in Iowa. For college instructors and students.

Being near the base of the food chain, they serve as food for larger animals, such as fish. The ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) Zooplankton Methodology Manual provides comprehensive coverage of modern techniques in zooplankton ecology written by a group of international experts. Chapters include sampling, acoustic and optical methods, estimation of feeding, growth, reproduction and metabolism, and up-to-date treatment of population genetics and modeling. This book will be a key reference work for marine scientists throughout the world. Sampling and experimental design Collecting zooplankton Techniques for assessing biomass and abundance Protozooplankton enumeration and biomass estimation New optical and acoustic techniques for estimating zooplankton biomass and abundance Methods for measuring zooplankton feeding, growth, reproduction and metabolism Population genetic analysis of zooplankton Modelling zooplankton dynamics This unique and comprehensive reference work will be essential reading for marine and freshwater research scientists and graduates entering the field.

Book excerpt: Climate change has been a central concern over recent years, with visible and highly publicized consequences such as melting Arctic ice and mountain glaciers, rising sea levels, and the submersion of low-lying coastal areas during mid-latitude and tropical cyclones. This book presents a review of the spatial impacts of contemporary climate change, with a focus on a systematic, multi-scalar approach. Beyond the facts – rises in temperature, changes in the spatial distribution of precipitation, melting of the marine and terrestrial cryosphere, changes in hydrological regimes at high and medium latitudes, etc. – it also analyzes the geopolitical consequences in the Arctic and Central Asia, changes to Mediterranean culture and to viticulture on a global scale, as well as impacts on the distribution of life, for example, in the Amazon rainforest, in large biomes on a global scale, and for birds.
