Book excerpt: This book is a heart felt story about a grandmother and granddaughters unconditional love for one another. The love is so strong and undying. Linda, our author, is a stronger person than she lets any one in on, and would like for people to look at her life as a success story. Going through so many trials and tribulations, and set backs and still being able to raise her children on a very small income, and always being a working mom; she was able to overcome so many obstacles and still make sure her children had what they needed to get through everyday life. Even though she longs for her fathers love, affection, and attention, and one on one relationship, she was able to learn so much from everyone around her,.family members. Linda grew up with her aunt Adelia as well as her maternal grandmother, and even though times were rough some days, she was able to grow to learn from and admire her aunt that took her in at a young age. Even though her aunt Adelia had her own family and there were struggles within the household, she was able to raise Linda, and teach her so much. Linda will always love and appreciate , and respect her aunt Adelia for all she had to go through raising a rebellious adolescent, and not giving up. Linda also loses faith in love and all that it stands for, not being able to open herself to marriage the way its supposed to be and a relationship with a man by her side, she floats endlessly like a lost soul and finds it hard to let her heart fall deeply in love, unconditionally. (a major obstacle) for her. Linda, would like to challenge her audience while reading her book, in the fact that, theres so much to learn and discover about life, when a parent dies, and children are left behind to make a name, and life for themselves, enduring everyday life as it comes at you. Throughout reading you will find that everything about Lindas life, and the person she is today and has become, is like a shadow of who her nana was, and thanks to the man upstairs for never leaving her side, proves there is a God, and you should never give into losing your faith, and never give up, no matter how bad you want to or how bad things get. In the end, striving to be your best acts as inspiration to others and you dont even know you could be helping others.

Book excerpt: In this inspirational and unflinchingly honest memoir, acclaimed author Reyna Grande describes her childhood torn between the United States and Mexico, and shines a light on the experiences, fears, and hopes of those who choose to make the harrowing journey across the border. Reyna Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this “compelling...unvarnished, resonant” (BookPage) story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries. As her parents make the dangerous trek across the Mexican border to “El Otro Lado” (The Other Side) in pursuit of the American dream, Reyna and her siblings are forced into the already overburdened household of their stern grandmother. When their mother at last returns, Reyna prepares for her own journey to “El Otro Lado” to live with the man who has haunted her imagination for years, her long-absent father. Funny, heartbreaking, and lyrical, The Distance Between Us poignantly captures the confusion and contradictions of childhood, reminding us that the joys and sorrows we experience are imprinted on the heart forever, calling out to us of those places we first called home. Also available in Spanish as La distancia entre nosotros.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of the Reese Witherspoon YA Book Club Pick Furia,Yamile Saied Méndez’s second adult novel is a multicultural rom-com about a woman who dreams of her soulmate—literally—and then must find her love in real-life—even if it means making room for new dreams. Madi Ramírez has it all—a thriving career she loves, a successful boyfriend, and a wedding to plan—when he finally proposes. So why does she feel like there is something missing? Jayden even has the right initials—the JR that appeared to Madi years ago, in a dream visitation from her beloved, wise abuela. Madi’s friends think her expectations are too high—but she can’t help wishing for that dreamy feeling in real-life. Wishing that Jayden would show her a little more affection. That she could really believe they were meant to be . . . When a business trip to Puerto Rico presents itself, Madi is quick to take it. She can finally scatter her abuela’s ashes on the beach, as she wished. And maybe time apart will remind Jayden how much Madi means to him—and maybe he’ll begin to show it. But in Puerto Rico, Madi finds something—well, someone—else. A man who makes her heart beat triple-time—and who feels as right as someone Fated—except for those nagging initials . . . Brimming with the magic of Old San Juan and la Isla del Encanto, The Love of My Lives is the perfect read for anyone who has longed for a legendary love story that transcends time and distance—and the powerful magic of steering their own dreams. Praise for Twice a Quinceañera “An enchanting novel overflowing with self-love and second chances.” —Kirkus Reviews “A fun, empowering romp.” —Publishers Weekly

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2020 YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award. Instead of giving him lunch money, Rex’s mom has signed him up for free meals. As a poor kid in a wealthy school district, better-off kids crowd impatiently behind him as he tries to explain to the cashier that he’s on the free meal program. The lunch lady is hard of hearing, so Rex has to shout. Free Lunch is the story of Rex’s efforts to navigate his first semester of sixth grade—who to sit with, not being able to join the football team, Halloween in a handmade costume, classmates and a teacher who take one look at him and decide he’s trouble—all while wearing secondhand clothes and being hungry. His mom and her boyfriend are out of work, and life at home is punctuated by outbursts of violence. Halfway through the semester, his family is evicted and ends up in government-subsidized housing in view of the school. Rex lingers at the end of last period every day until the buses have left, so no one will see where he lives. Unsparing and realistic, Free Lunch is a story of hardship threaded with hope and moments of grace. Rex’s voice is compelling and authentic, and Free Lunch is a true, timely, and essential work that illuminates the lived experience of poverty in America.

Frenemies Whit and Zay have been at odds for years (ever since he broke up with her in, like, the most embarrassing way imaginable), so when they’re forced to organize the fall formal together, it's a literal disaster. Sparks fly as Whitney—type-A, passionate, a perfectionist, and a certified sweater-weather fanatic—butts heads with Zay, a dry, relaxed skater boy who takes everything in stride. But not all of those sparks are bad. . . . Has their feud been a big misunderstanding all along? Blisteringly funny and profoundly well-observed, The Fall of Whit Rivera is a snug and cozy autumn romcom that also tackles weightier topics like PCOS, chronic illness, sexuality, fatphobia, Latine identity, and class. Funny, honest, insightful, romantic, and poignant, it is classic Crystal Maldonado—and it will have her legion of fans absolutely swooning.
