Why did medieval people sleep sitting up? When were the two “dirty centuries”? Why, for centuries, did rich people fear fruit? In her brilliantly and creatively researched book, Lucy Worsley takes us through the bedroom, bathroom, living room, and kitchen, covering the history of each room and exploring what people actually did in bed, in the bath, at the table, and at the stove-from sauce stirring to breast-feeding, teeth cleaning to masturbating, getting dressed to getting married-providing a compelling account of how the four rooms of the home have evolved from medieval times to today, charting revolutionary changes in society.

Download or read book Light Touches written by Alice Barnaby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light Touches: Cultural Practices of Illumination, 1800-1900 explores how urban lives in the nineteenth century were increasingly touched by innovations in the technologies and aesthetics of illumination. Dramatic changes in qualities of light – and darkness – became acutely palpable to the human sensorium; using, seeing, feeling, and being in light were now matters of intense personal and cultural concern. Light gave meaningful vitality to the period’s material culture, and light itself became something to be perceptually consumed. Over the course of six chapters Alice Barnaby traces how light was used in amateur artistic pastimes, interior design and clothing fashions, spectacular public amusements, volatile street demonstrations, and art gallery designs. From these previously unexplored examples a more complex history of light in the period emerges. Society’s fascination with illumination, its desire to work with it and make meaning from it gave rise to a distinctly new set of cultural practices. Through these practices unexpected discoveries about the modern world were revealed. Light proved to be instrumental in everyday acts of experimentation and imaginative enquiry. Barnaby offers an intervention into the dominant scholarly narrative of the nineteenth century which traditionally reads modernity as synonymous with the formation of a spectacular, disembodied visuality. Light Touches, in contrast, returns vision to the body and foregrounds the actively felt - as well as seen - sensation of light. In coming to understand these cultural practices of illumination, the book reconsiders many assumptions about nineteenth-century modernity.
Book Synopsis Charles Dickens and the Properties of Fiction by : Ushashi Dasgupta
Download or read book Charles Dickens and the Properties of Fiction written by Ushashi Dasgupta and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-20 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Dickens was nineteen years old, he wrote a poem for Maria Beadnell, the young woman he wished to marry. The poem imagined Maria as a welcoming landlady offering lodgings to let. Almost forty years later, Dickens died, leaving his final novel unfinished - in its last scene, another landlady sets breakfast down for her enigmatic lodger. These kinds of characters are everywhere in Dickens's writing. Charles Dickens and the Properties of Fiction: The Lodger World explores the significance of tenancy in his fiction. In nineteenth century Britain the vast majority of people rented, rather than owned, their homes. Instead of keeping to themselves, they shared space - renting, lodging, taking lodgers in, or simply living side-by-side in a crowded modern city. Charles Dickens explored both the chaos and the unexpected harmony to be found in rented spaces, the loneliness and sociability, the interactions between cohabitants, the complex gender dynamics at play, and the relationship between space and money. Charles Dickens and the Properties of Fiction demonstrates that a cosy, secluded home life was beyond the reach of most Victorian Londoners, and considers Dickens's nuanced conception of domesticity. Tenancy maintained an enduring hold upon his imagination, giving him new stories to tell and offering him a set of models to think about authorship. He celebrated the fact that unassuming houses brim with narrative potential: comedies, romances, and detective plots take place behind their doors. Charles Dickens and the Properties of Fiction: The Lodger World wedges these doors open.

Download or read book The Absurdity and Injustice of the Window Tax written by M. Humberstone and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Absurdity and Injustice of the Window Tax: Considered With Especial Reference to the New Survey, 1841 In submitting the following pages to the public, the writer is actuated chiefly by a desire of redressing a manifest and undeniable grievance, which has long been acknowledged to press with peculiar hardship upon the middling classes. He has not gone out of his way to attack the Window Duty, but finding himself oppressed and aggrieved thereby he hesitated not to grapple with the foe. Neither should he in the present embarrassing state of the finances of the country have stepped forward in this manner if it had not been for the asperity and rigour of the executive in the New Survey, which has certainly exceeded that of any former one, and which he thinks has gone beyond the intentions of the legislature, and overstrained the bow. There is a point beyond which the force of pressure cannot go with safety, and it is to be hoped that the greatest good may result from this apparent evil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1964, Peel and the Conservative Party is a major historical study that considers the problems of Peel who in 1932 was to recreate a party which had been shattered successively by Canning, Catholic Emancipation, and the Reform Bill, and, to lead a party whose interests were hopelessly divided between agriculture and industry. The author acknowledges the work of Professors Aspinall and Gash on the subject, and among other things considers the true significance of the resignation of the Duke of Wellington in 1830. This book will be an interesting read for students of history and political science.
