Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cytokines are protein messengers responsible for cellular communication with great therapeutic potential to control inflammatory and immune disorders such us cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel disease. Despite the solid scientific rationale for this therapeutic promise, many cytokine-related therapies have failed to establish clinical utility. In March 2009, international experts from academia, industry and government convened to discuss the scientific and clinical basis for the successes and failures of recombinant cytokines and cytokine antagonists as therapeutic agents, and possible strategies for improving their clinical success. This volume included extended versions of key presentations at the meeting. Participants examined: • Improved methods for identifying disease targets • Alternative methods for enhancing and targeting cytokine delivery • Physicochemical modification of cytokines to prolong their bioavailability NOTE: Annals volumes are available for sale as individual books or as a journal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes is a major public health problem in the United States. This collection, Diabetes and Exercise, discusses the extent of the problem of diabetes and sedentary lifestyle and presents a compelling rationale for the importance of increased physical activity and exercise in persons with diabetes. The concept of exercise as medicine has a strong but underappreciated scientific basis for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Diabetes and Exercise, compiled by a team of experts in the field, focuses on both the physiological and practical aspects of the beneficial effects of exercise. This thorough collaboration provides the why's and how's to implementing the physical activity and exercise changes so important in diabetes prevention and disease management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as the health costs of aging threaten to bankrupt developed countries, this book makes the scientific case that a biological "bailout" could be on the way, and that human aging can be different in the future than it is today. Here 40 authors argue how our improving understanding of the biology of aging and selected technologies should enable the successful use of many different and complementary methods for ameliorating aging, and why such interventions are appropriate based on our current historical, anthropological, philosophical, ethical, evolutionary, and biological context. Challenging concepts are presented together with in-depth reviews and paradigm-breaking proposals that collectively illustrate the potential for changing aging as never before. The proposals extend from today to a future many decades from now in which the control of aging may become effectively complete. Examples include sirtuin-modulating pills, new concepts for attacking cardiovascular disease and cancer, mitochondrial rejuvenation, stem cell therapies and regeneration, tissue reconstruction, telomere maintenance, prevention of immunosenescence, extracellular rejuvenation, artificial DNA repair, and full deployment of nanotechnology. The Future of Aging will make you think about aging differently and is a challenge to all of us to open our eyes to the future therapeutic potential of biogerontology.

This book was released on 2016-06-30 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 3C seismic applications provide enhanced rock property characterization of the reservoir that can complement P-wave methods. Continued interest in converted P- to S-waves (PS-waves) and vertical seismic profiles (VSPs) has resulted in the steady development of advanced vector wavefield techniques. PS-wave images along with VSP data can be used to help P-wave interpretation of structure in gas obscured zones, of elastic and fluid properties for lithology discrimination from S-wave impedance and density inversion in unconventional reservoirs, and of fracture characterization and stress monitoring from S-wave birefringence (splitting) analysis. The book, which accompanies the 2016 SEG Distinguished Instructor Short Course, presents an overview of 3C seismic theory and practical application: from fundamentals of PS-waves and VSPs, through to acquisition and processing including interpretation techniques. The emphasis is on unique aspects of vector wavefields, anisotropy, and the important relationships that unify S-waves and P-waves. Various applications and case studies demonstrate image benefits from PS-waves, elastic properties and fluid discrimination from joint inversion of amplitude variations with offset/angle (AVO/A), and VSP methods for anisotropic velocity model building and improved reservoir imaging. The book will be of interest to geophysicists, geologists, and engineers, especially those involved with or considering the use of AVO/A inversion, fracture/stress characterization analyses, or interpretation in gas-obscured reservoirs.

Book excerpt: This book explains how researchers design, prepare, develop, test and fly their science experiments on microgravity platforms before sending them to space. All preparation phases are explained and presented, including aircraft parabolic flights as part of spaceflight preparation. Twenty international authors, all experts in their own microgravity research field, contribute to chapters describing their experience to prepare experiments before space flights. Fields covered are Physical Sciences and Life Sciences. Physical Sciences covers fluid physics (vibration effects on diffusion; red blood cell dynamics; cavitation in microgravity; capillary driven flows) and material sciences (electromagnetic levitator onboard International Space Station). Life Sciences includes human physiology (sampling earlobe blood; human cardiovascular experiments; tumours in space) and neurophysiology (dexterous manipulation of objects in weightlessness).
