Download or read book Art Today written by Edward Lucie-Smith and published by Oxford [Oxfordshire] : Phaidon. This book was released on 1983 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The author as noted in the introduction has in the first part of the book 'treated one of the major explosions of creative forces in the visual sector' by grouping Futurism, Cubism, Surrealism, Constructivism, and Expressionism. His treatment of the years after World War 11 in the second part of the book is no less effective. The discussions of the movements of Pop Art, Op Art, 'Tachisme' or Abstract Expressionsim, Minimal Art, Body Art, Conceptualism, and Superrealism - to which Lucie-Smith dedicates his most impressive chapters - constitute an intellectual and creative adventure which provocatively expands the confines of art - however it can be defined - into unexplored territory."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Abstract Art written by Pepe Karmel and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading authority on the subject presents a radically new approach to the understanding of abstract art, in this richly illustrated and persuasive history. In his fresh take on abstract art, noted art historian Pepe Karmel chronicles the movement from a global perspective, while embedding abstraction in a recognizable reality. Moving beyond the canonical terrain of abstract art, the author demonstrates how artists from around the world have used abstract imagery to express social, cultural, and spiritual experience. Karmel builds this fresh approach to abstract art around five inclusive themes: body, landscape, cosmology, architecture, and man-made signs and patterns. In the process, this history develops a series of narratives that go far beyond the established figures and movements traditionally associated with abstract art. Each narrative is complemented by a number of featured abstract works, arranged in thought-provoking pairings with accompanying extended captions that provide an in-depth analysis. This wide-ranging examination incorporates work from Asia, Australia, Africa, and South America, as well as Europe and North America, through artists ranging from Wu Guanzhong, Joan Miró, Jackson Pollock, to Hilma af Klint, and Odili Donald Odita. Breaking new ground, Karmel has forged a new history of this key art movement.

Book Synopsis Cubism and Abstract Art by : Alfred H. Barr, Jr.
Download or read book Cubism and Abstract Art written by Alfred H. Barr, Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1936, in this classic account of the development of abstract art Alfred Barr analyses the many diverse abstract movements which emerged with bewildering rapidity in the early years of the twentieth century, and which had an impact on every major form of art. Barr traces the history of nonrepresentational art from its antecedents in late nineteenth-century painting in France – Seurat and Neo-Impressionism, Gauguin and Synthetism, and Cézanne – through abstract tendencies in Dada and Surrealism. He distinguishes two main trends in abstract art: the geometrical, structural current as it developed in Cubism and later in Constructivism and Mondrian, and the intuitional, decorative current running from Matisse and Fauvism through Kandinskt and, later, Surrealism. He shows how individual movements influenced one another, and how many artists experimented with more than one style. Barr also discusses the involvement of a number of abstract movements in architecture and the practical arts – the Bauhaus in Germany, de Stijl in Holland, Purism in France, and Suprematism and Constructivism in Russia.

Download or read book Art/talk written by Alwynne Mackie and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the puzzling phenomenon of new veiling practices among lower middle class women in Cairo, Egypt. Although these women are part of a modernizing middle class, they also voluntarily adopt a traditional symbol of female subordination. How can this paradox be explained? An explanation emerges which reconceptualizes what appears to be reactionary behavior as a new style of political struggle--as accommodating protest. These women, most of them clerical workers in the large government bureaucracy, are ambivalent about working outside the home, considering it a change which brings new burdens as well as some important benefits. At the same time they realize that leaving home and family is creating an intolerable situation of the erosion of their social status and the loss of their traditional identity. The new veiling expresses women's protest against this. MacLeod argues that the symbolism of the new veiling emerges from this tense subcultural dilemma, involving elements of both resistance and acquiescence.

Book excerpt: This first volume in the Tate Gallery Liverpool Critical Forum series is derived from a conference held in conjunction with the display of Abstract Expressionist Painting from the USA, which was mounted at Tate Gallery Liverpool from March 1992 to January 1993. The display comprised 21 paintings by 13 artists, including Ad Reinhardt, Norman Lewis, Adolph Gottlieb, Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning. The objectives of the conference, involving speakers from the international community of scholarship in the field, were: to elicit new observations, critical judgments and proposals from the knowledge base of abstract expressionism and perhaps to challenge some of its prevailing conventions; and to debate the role of the Tate Gallery Liverpool as a modifier of this field of knowledge.
