Book excerpt: After more than a century of study, the hydrogen atom still presents challenges and opportunities to theoretical as well as to experimental physicists. The discovery of the Lamb shift in the late nineteen forties, followed by the development of QED and the introduction of powerful new experimental techniques in the nineteen sixties and seventies, have preserved for hydrogen its central place in atomic physics. Part I of this book, a reprint of the work published in 1957, covers the period from the earliest days up to the late nineteen fifties. Part II, a collection of progress reports written by well-known specialists on hydrogen and hydrogen-like systems, presents the advances in theory and experiment that have occurred since that time.

Book excerpt: This book collects the lectures given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Atoms in Strong Fields", which took place on the island of Kos, Greece, during the two weeks of October 9-21,1988. The designation "strong field" applies here to an external electromagnetic field that is sufficiently strong to cause highly nonlinear alterations in atomic or molecular struc ture and dynamics. The specific topics treated in this volume fall into two general cater gories, which are those for which strong field effects can be studied in detail in terrestrial laboratories: the dynamics of excited states in static or quasi-static electric and magnetic fields; and the interaction of atoms and molecules with intense laser radiation. In both areas there exist promising opportunities for research of a fundamental nature. An electric field of even a few volts per centimeter can be very strong on the atom ic scale, if it acts upon a weakly bound state. The study of Rydberg states with high reso lution laser spectroscopic techniques has made it possible to follow the transition from weak-field to strong-field behavior in remarkable detail, using static fields of modest lab oratory strength; in the course of this transition the atomic system evolves from one which can be thoroughly understood in terms of field-free quantum numbers, to one which cannot be meaningfully associated at all with the zero-field states of the atom.

Every classical and modern aspect is included and discussed in detail. The new edition is completely revised, new sections on atoms in strong electric fields and high magnetic fields complete the comprehensive coverage of all topics related to atoms and quanta. All new developments, such as new experiments on quantum entanglement, the quantum computer, quantum information, the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradoxon, Bell's inequality, Schrödinger's cat, decoherence, Bose-Einstein-Condensation and the atom laser are discussed. Over 170 problems and their solutions help deepen the insight in this subject area and make this book a real study text. The second and more advanced book by the same authors entitled "Molecular Physics and Elements of Quantum Chemistry" is the completion of this unique textbook.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject Chemistry - Other, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a physical phenomenon that depends on the quantitative mechanical magnetic properties of the nucleus of the atom. NMR is used to denote a set of scientific methodologies and techniques. This phenomenon is used to study molecules in terms of structure and spatial composition. The phenomenon is mainly based on the fact that all atomic nuclei that have an odd number of protons or neutrons have intrinsic magnetic torque and angular momentum. The nuclei used in these techniques are the nucleus of the hydrogen atom H1, the most abundant isotope of hydrogen, Carbon-13. Other isotopes can be used but their uses are less. The spinning motion of these elements revolves around a magnetic moment (M) axis. When these nuclei are placed between poles of an external magnetic field, they influence the energy levels of the spin energy level of these nuclei, resulting in dissociation of energy splitting The spherical motion to two different energy levels is based on the direction of the magnetic momentum resulting from the spindle motion

Book excerpt: The article describes briefly the results of preliminary experiments to determine the fraction, alpha, of 30-kev hydrogen atoms ionized by a Lorentz force in a magnetic field with an intensity of up to 60 kilooersteds. Unlike Sweetman's experiments, in which the value of alpha was estimated from the flux of neutrals produced by the charge transfer of the trapped ions, this study made direct measurements of the number of ions formed when a beam of neutral hydrogen atoms passes through a magnetic field. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers associated with the conference "Atomic Spectra and Collisions in External Fields II", that took place July 30-31 1987 at Royal Holloway and Beford New College. The first meeting of this name was held at the National Bureau of Standards in Gaithersburg, Maryland in 1984, and, if any tradition can yet be said to have been established in the series, it is that the proceedings be written after the conference. We hope thereby to preserve some impression of the discussions that took place, which in both cases were vigorous and unihibited. Both meetings happen to have convened in proximity to major developments in the field. At the time of the first conference, results of experimental measurements of dielectronic recombination in electron ion beams were beginning to appear. These showed large discrepancies with theoretical calculations, which were attributed to the effects of rather weak electric fields on the highly-excited states that mediate the recombination process. This conjecture gave rise to widespread concern in the plasma physics community that the representation of dielectronic recombination in existing plasma models, in which it plays an important role in energy and ionization balance, might be seriously in error due to neglect of the effects of electric and magnetic fields. The subject of field effects on recombination processes was thus a major focus of the 1984 meeting.

Book excerpt: Aimed at senior undergraduate and first-year graduate students in departments of physics and astronomy, this textbook gives a systematic treatment of atomic and molecular structure and spectra, together with the effect of weak and strong external electromagnetic fields. Topics chosen are those of interest in astronomy, and indeed many were inspired by specific astronomical contexts. Examples include the negative ion of hydrogen and the effects of strong magnetic fields such as those occurring on certain white dwarfs and neutron stars. Adiabatic and non-adiabatic handling of electron correlations and application to processes such as dielectronic recombination are included. Astronomical examples are provided throughout, as well as end-of-the-chapter problems and exercises. Over seventy illustrative diagrams complete this unique and comprehensive volume.
