Book excerpt: Conversion of tropical forest to agricultural land and pasture has reduced forest extent and the provision of ecosystem services, including watershed protection, biodiversity conservation, and carbon sequestration. Forest conservation and reforestation can restore those ecosystem services. We have assessed forest species patterns, quantified deforestation and reforestation rates, and projected future baseline carbon emissions and removal in Amazon tropical rainforest at La Selva Central, Peru. The research area is a 4800 km2 buffer zone around the Parque Nacional Yanachaga-Chemillen, Bosque de Proteccion San Matias-San Carlos, and the Reserva Comunal Yanesha. A planned project for the period 2006-2035 would conserve 4000 ha of forest in a proposed 7000 ha Area de Conservacion Municipale de Chontabamba and establish 5600 ha of natural regeneration and 1400 ha of native species plantations, laid out in fajas de enriquecimiento (contour plantings), to reforest 7000 ha of agricultural land. Forest inventories of seven sites covering 22.6 ha in primary forest and 17 sites covering 16.5 ha in secondary forest measured 17,073 trees of diameter e"10 cm. The 24 sites host trees of 512 species, 267 genera, and 69 families. We could not identify the family of 7% of the trees or the scientific species of 21% of the trees. Species richness is 346 in primary forest and 257 in the secondary forest. In primary forest, 90% of aboveground biomass resides in old-growth species. Conversely, in secondary forest, 66% of aboveground biomass rests in successional species. The density of trees of diameter e"10 cm is 366 trees ha−1 in primary forest and 533 trees ha−1 in secondary forest, although the average diameter is 24 ± 15 cm in primary forest and 17 ± 8 cm in secondary forest. Using Amazon forest biomass equations and wood densities for 117 species, aboveground biomass is 240 ± 30 t ha−1 in the primary sites and 90 ± 10 t ha−1 in the secondary sites. Aboveground carbon density is 120 ± 15 t ha−1 in primary forest and 40 ± 5 t ha−1 in secondary forest. Forest stands in the secondary forest sites range in age from 10 to 42 y. Growth in biomass (t ha−1) as a function of time (y) follows the relation: biomass = 4.09-0.017 age2 (p 0.001). Understanding long-term biomass dynamics is important for managing forests as carbon sinks and for co-benefits such as watershed protection and biodiversity. However there are many unanswered questions regarding these dynamics in northeastern U.S. forests: How have secondary forests of the U.S. Northeast recovered post nineteenth century agricultural abandonment? How has the region’s extensive land-use history influenced long-term structural development and aboveground carbon storage? To answer these questions, we employed a longitudinal study based on twelve years of empirical data (2001-2013) from the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller (MBR) National Historical Park in Woodstock, VT. MBR Park was the first parcel of land to actively be reforested in the eastern U.S., and as such, its diverse forest mosaic reflects a history of alternate reforestation approaches and varied successional trajectories indicative of secondary forest recovery occurring across the broader northeastern forest landscape. We also used 150 years of documentary data from park management records. This research evaluates the effects of reforestation approaches (planting vs. natural regeneration), management regimes (long-term low-to-intermediate harvest intensities at varied harvest frequencies), and stand development pathways on biomass outcomes. We generated biometrics representative of stand structural complexity, including the H’ structural diversity index, and aboveground biomass (live trees, snags, and downed coarse woody debris pools) estimates. Multivariate analyses evaluated the predictive strength of reforestation approach, management history, and site characteristics relative to aboveground carbon pools and stand structural complexity. Classification and Regression Tree (CART) analysis ranked reforestation approach (plantation or natural regeneration) as the strongest predictor of long-term mean total aboveground carbon storage, while harvest frequency, and stand age were selected as secondary variables. CART ranked forest percent conifer (a metric closely associated with reforestation approach) as the strongest predictor of H’ index, while harvest intensity, and harvest frequency were selected as secondary variables. Increases in harvest intensity can significantly reduce aboveground carbon storage. Our results suggest that a variety of long-term recovery pathways converge on high levels of aboveground carbon storage, including both conifer plantations and naturally regenerated hardwood stands, but choice of silvicultural management approach can dramatically alter those trajectories. Importantly, total aboveground biomass (i.e., carbon) co-varied with H’ (r2 = 0.25), and thus, our dataset showed a positive relationship between forest carbon storage and structural complexity, supporting the concept of multifunctional forestry emphasizing late-successional habitats.

Book excerpt: Methods for obtaining accurate, spatially explicit estimates of biomass density in tropical forests are required to reduce uncertainties in the global carbon cycle, and to support international climate agreements and emerging carbon markets. Three-dimensional (3-D) remote sensing techniques sensitive to the vertical structure of vegetation provide a unique opportunity for mapping and monitoring forest carbon stocks across large areas in the tropics. However, approaches to forest biomass estimation from remotely sensed structure have yet to be fully developed to deliver the required biomass accuracy. In this research, we use airborne laser scanning (ALS), space-based lidar observations (ICESat/GLAS), and detailed in situ measurements made at the Tapajós National Forest, Brazil, to advance methods of biomass estimation in tropical regions from remotely sensed structure. The overall objectives were to (1) test and refine methods for the extraction of structural information from lidar data; (2) determine the accuracy of lidar estimates of structure in relation to detailed field measurements of vertical structure; and (3) develop and validate structure-based models for optimal prediction of aboveground biomass. Because remote sensing approaches to biomass estimation begin with field estimates of biomass, field plot data collected at Tapajós were also used to gain a better understanding of the uncertainty associated with plot-level biomass estimates obtained specifically for calibration of remote sensing data. This included an evaluation of the error resulting from spatial disagreement between field and remote sensing measurements (i.e., co-location error), and the error introduced when accounting for temporal differences in data acquisition. Results show that a new approach to biomass estimation based on Fourier transforms of lidar profiles significantly improves predictions of aboveground biomass ranging from 2 to 538 Mg ha−1 in primary and secondary forests. Data from two different regions in the Amazon were used to demonstrate and test this method in a range of conditions. The improvement in biomass estimation performance was consistent across sites and the approach was integrated in a multi-stage scaling strategy to biomass estimation to produce a wall-to-wall map of biomass across a large area in the Amazon.

Several models are currently used for estimating tree biomass. Each of these incorporates different calculation methods that may significantly impact the estimates of total aboveground tree biomass, merchantable biomass, and carbon pools. Consequently, carbon markets, bioenergy projects, and similar efforts may be affected. In addition to differences in allometric equations, the various methods are most suitable for particular geographic scales of analysis. We examine three approaches that might be used for midscale analyses (e.g., 25,000 to several million acres) and compare the regional models with equations developed by Jenkins et al. and with the component ratio method (CRM). These three methods produce relatively similar estimates of total aboveground biomass for softwood species in Oregon, but substantially different estimates for the proportion of total biomass that is merchantable . For the major softwood species in Oregon, the total aboveground biomass using the CRM is 3 percent lower than estimates with regional equations, and the Jenkins models produce estimates that are 17 percent higher. However, on average, the proportion of softwood merchantable biomass computed with CRM is about 83 percent of the total aboveground biomass with little variation from species to species, whereas regional models estimate that 72 percent is merchantable, and the Jenkins equations estimate that 78 percent is merchantable.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to evaluate the long-term effects of wood harvesting and sustainable forest timbering practices on forest biomass and carbon sequestration in West Virginia. Although several forest management and carbon models have been coupled for scenario analysis, this integrated modeling approach is novel as it predicts timbering events, disturbance events, and forest stand growth as endogenous processes operating at multiple scales (tree, stand, region, and state). This approach allowed for simulating a number of key micro-scale, cross-scale feedback mechanisms, including the long-term interaction between forest stand volume dynamics, growth, timbering event frequency, and disturbance event frequency at multiple scales. The results of the logistic regression analyses indicated that timber stand value density, tree prices, and plot ownership were key drivers in predicting timber stand and tree selection for commercial timber removal events. Beyond the direct effect of timbering events (i.e., removal of forest biomass), timbering events in West Virginia did not have a statistically significant indirect effect on net annual forest stand growth rates, landscape level disturbances, regeneration rates, nor mortality rates. Overall, the integrated model estimated that the average net annual growth rate for West Virginia in 2000 for the validation dataset was 1.38% (1.33% was the 5 year average), which was within 1% of the observed rate of 1.40%. From 2000 to 2050, aboveground biomass and carbon stocks in West Virginia forests are projected to continue to increase, despite increased timbering activity, with nearly half of the state forest acreage being classified in an advanced stage of recovery from past timbering by 2050 (up from 28% in 2000). However, the rate of annual increase in forest carbon and biomass decelerates over time. This deceleration is due to a projected doubling of the timber removal rates toward mid-century (due to increases in timber prices and stand density), increases in landscape scale disturbances, and declining stand net annual growth, which are all due to increases in stand density. Forest stands with steeper slopes, lower annual average precipitation, and greater stand volume density were more likely to experience a landscape disturbance event, resulting in a net negative growth rate for the stand. Overall, these disturbance events are projected to increase in frequency by approximately 50% from 2000 to 2050, as forest stands increase in stand biomass density. Application of sustainable timbering techniques was found to significantly enhance long-term projections of biomass, carbon, net annual growth (50% higher than status quo), and system carrying capacity.

Book excerpt: Sound policy recommendations relating to the role of forest management in mitigating atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) depend upon establishing accurate methodologies for quantifying forest carbon pools for large tracts of land that can be dynamically updated over time. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) remote sensing is a promising technology for achieving accurate estimates of aboveground biomass and thereby carbon pools; however, not much is known about the accuracy of estimating biomass change and carbon flux from repeat LiDAR acquisitions containing different data sampling characteristics. In this study, discrete return airborne LiDAR data was collected in 2003 and 2009 across H"0,000 hectares (ha) of an actively managed, mixed conifer forest landscape in northern Idaho, USA. Forest inventory plots, established via a random stratified sampling design, were established and sampled in 2003 and 2009. The Random Forest machine learning algorithm was used to establish statistical relationships between inventory data and forest structural metrics derived from the LiDAR acquisitions. Aboveground biomass maps were created for the study area based on statistical relationships developed at the plot level. Over this 6-year period, we found that the mean increase in biomass due to forest growth across the non-harvested portions of the study area was 4.8 metric ton/hectare (Mg/ha). In these non-harvested areas, we found a significant difference in biomass increase among forest successional stages, with a higher biomass increase in mature and old forest compared to stand initiation and young forest. Approximately 20% of the landscape had been disturbed by harvest activities during the six-year time period, representing a biomass loss of>70 Mg/ha in these areas. During the study period, these harvest activities outweighed growth at the landscape scale, resulting in an overall loss in aboveground carbon at this site. The 30-fold increase in sampling density between the 2003 and 2009 did not affect the biomass estimates. Overall, LiDAR data coupled with field reference data offer a powerful method for calculating pools and changes in aboveground carbon in forested systems. The results of our study suggest that multitemporal LiDAR-based approaches are likely to be useful for high quality estimates of aboveground carbon change in conifer forest systems.

Although overall aboveground carbon mass in live trees did not change in the Tongass National Forest, the Chugach National Forest showed a 4.5% increase. For the Tongass National Forest, results differed substantially for managed and unmanaged forest: managed lands had higher per-acre rates of sequestration through growth and recruitment, and carbon stores per acre that were higher for decomposing downed wood, and lower for live trees and snags. Book excerpt: The U.S. Forest Service, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program uses numerous models and associated coefficients to estimate aboveground volume, biomass, and carbon for live and standing dead trees for most tree species in forests of the United States. The tree attribute models are coupled with FIA's national inventory of sampled trees to produce estimates of tree growing-stock volume, biomass, and carbon, which are available in the Forest Inventory and Analysis database (FIADB; http://fiatools.fs.fed.us). To address an increasing need for accurate and easy-to-use documentation of relevant tree attribute models, needed individual tree gross volume, sound volume, biomass (including components), and carbon models for species in the United States are compiled and described in this publication with accompanying electronic files on a CD-ROM (13.4 MB Zip) included with the publication. This report describes models currently in use as of 2010. These models are subject to change as the FIADB and associated tree attribute models are improved.
