Here are the people who play financial games above our laws. The organizations that can drain the economy of the cost of a Category 5 Hurricane...repeatedly. Those who harm our shared society as much or more than every other criminal offense in the land...combined. This book tells why many North Americans can not only no longer have nice things. Some can no longer even have nice dreams. Many will grow up in a disturbed nation, without even knowing where their retirement security went...nor where the nation's economic prosperity went. A glimpse within some of the greatest economic drains in the land, all of which are done invisibly by professionals. Professionals that society once could trust.

Book excerpt: Freezing Order, the follow-up to Red Notice, is available now! “[Red Notice] does for investing in Russia and the former Soviet Union what Liar’s Poker did for our understanding of Salomon Brothers, Wall Street, and the mortgage-backed securities business in the 1980s. Browder’s business saga meshes well with the story of corruption and murder in Vladimir Putin’s Russia, making Red Notice an early candidate for any list of the year’s best books” (Fortune). “Part John Grisham-like thriller, part business and political memoir.” —The New York Times This is a story about an accidental activist. Bill Browder started out his adult life as the Wall Street maverick whose instincts led him to Russia just after the breakup of the Soviet Union, where he made his fortune. Along the way he exposed corruption, and when he did, he barely escaped with his life. His Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky wasn’t so lucky: he ended up in jail, where he was tortured to death. That changed Browder forever. He saw the murderous heart of the Putin regime and has spent the last half decade on a campaign to expose it. Because of that, he became Putin’s number one enemy, especially after Browder succeeded in having a law passed in the United States—The Magnitsky Act—that punishes a list of Russians implicated in the lawyer’s murder. Putin famously retaliated with a law that bans Americans from adopting Russian orphans. A financial caper, a crime thriller, and a political crusade, Red Notice is the story of one man taking on overpowering odds to change the world, and also the story of how, without intending to, he found meaning in his life.

When a bank calls the loan on one of the companies he's been using as a front to launder drug money, his plans go sideways. When he discovers the company's principal, Koehle, has transferred all its assets to investors who belong to his wife's church, the Mounties investigate, and Davis is ordered by the gang to kill Koehle. Davis finds himself at war with his bleak options. Giving up his remaining scrap of humanity by committing murder would mean forever losing the possibility of the peaceful life he hopes for. But if he helps Koehle escape, it'll be him the gang's after next. He must make his decision and act fast before the Mounties or the gang decide for him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One night, at around 9:30 p.m., as Albert Sr. drove his Mercedes through the front gates of his residence, he was greeted by four bullets. Apparently the assailant had been lurking in the shadows, awaiting his victim's arrival. The police and EMS were called by the nanny after she heard the loud noise and went to investigate... He was still sitting in his seat, strapped, with his head slumped to the side...The victim was covered with blood and appeared to have bled profusely from the area of the head. The popular sentiment that money, education, and affluence are the solutions to our every problem is nothing but a myth. In Money, Misery, and Murder, Author J.J. Joseph illustrates that, though we can all agree that money often makes our lives a little easier, it can be the reason for our demise as well. He cleverly untangles a tangled web of infidelity, deception, and jealousy. Money is the root of all evil, but could it have lead to a murder?

Book excerpt: “Full of schadenfreude and speculation—and solid, timely history too.” —Kirkus Reviews “This is a portrait of capitalism as white-knuckle risk taking, yielding fruitful discoveries for the fathers, but only sterile speculation for the sons—a story that resonates with today's economic upheaval.” —Publishers Weekly “What's not to enjoy about a book full of monstrous egos, unimaginable sums of money, and the punishment of greed and shortsightedness?” —The Economist Phenomenal reviews and sales greeted the hardcover publication of The Big Rich, New York Times bestselling author Bryan Burrough's spellbinding chronicle of Texas oil. Weaving together the multigenerational sagas of the industry's four wealthiest families, Burrough brings to life the men known in their day as the Big Four: Roy Cullen, H. L. Hunt, Clint Murchison, and Sid Richardson, all swaggering Texas oil tycoons who owned sprawling ranches and mingled with presidents and Hollywood stars. Seamlessly charting their collective rise and fall, The Big Rich is a hugely entertaining account that only a writer with Burrough's abilities-and Texas upbringing-could have written.

Drawing on years of research and extraordinary access to gang leaders, law enforcement, and federal prosecutors, Green delivers an engrossing work of gritty urban reportage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailing the resettlement narratives of five men who have committed different types of murder (confrontational/revenge, financial gain, random, intimate partner femicide, and family feud), this book counters narratives of neoliberal, ‘responsibilizing’ messages of individualism to investigate what informs their experiences of resettlement. Life Beyond Murder: Exploring the Identity Reconstruction of Mandatory Lifers After Release explores the impact of mandatory lifers’ institutionalisation, families, consumer culture, emotions, and supervision, considering how these factors hamper or assist with their transition from the stigmatising identity of being ‘dangerous murderers’. The book’s discussion is guided by the men’s narratives, employing a ‘tug of war’ metaphor to elucidate the ‘push-pull forces’ that influence the men’s efforts to reconstruct their lives in the years following their release. To be successful, the book argues, these men have to reconcile a paradoxical situation, and the most skilled mandatory lifers manage to relativise their involvement in murder whilst concomitantly showing remorse. This situation is achieved through a Splitting Narrative that ultimately defends against anxiety, contains internal stigma, and often showcases self-flagellant remorse, as they move towards positive social identities such as philanthropists, family men, wounded healers, and pious members of the church.
