Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada is covered by a system of law and governance that largely obscures and ignores the presence of pre-existing Indigenous regimes. Indigenous law, however, has continuing relevance for both Aboriginal peoples and the Canadian state. In his in-depth examination of the continued existence and application of Indigenous legal values, John Borrows suggests how First Nations laws could be applied by Canadian courts, and tempers this by pointing out the many difficulties that would occur if the courts attempted to follow such an approach. By contrasting and comparing Aboriginal stories and Canadian case law, and interweaving political commentary, Borrows argues that there is a better way to constitute Aboriginal / Crown relations in Canada. He suggests that the application of Indigenous legal perspectives to a broad spectrum of issues that confront us as humans will help Canada recover from its colonial past, and help Indigenous people recover their country. Borrows concludes by demonstrating how Indigenous peoples' law could be more fully and consciously integrated with Canadian law to produce a society where two world views can co-exist and a different vision of the Canadian constitution and citizenship can be created.

It features the much-sought-after extensive inventory "Plants from Archaeological Sites East of the Rockies," which serves as a reference to archaeobotanical collections curated at the Illinois State Museum. The chapters dealing with protohistory and early historic foodways and trade in the upper Midwest are especially relevant at this time of increasing attention to early Indian-white interactions. Book excerpt: Long-term archaeological investigations at the Greenlee Tract by Gray & Pape, Inc., revealed significant evidence for over 10,000 years of Native American utilization of southern Ohio's ancient landscape. Using a siteless landscape approach, this book presents a comprehensive summary of all past work. Various topics are discussed including landscape development, environmental patterns and cycles, settlement patterning and subsistence strategies, and social organization. Several unique archaeological findings are reported upon including the discovery of one of the largest Middle-Late Woodland (A.D. 300-600) villages in the region; the documentation of a rare open-aired, Early Woodland (700 - 100 B.C.) ceremonial structure; and some of the best evidence for Middle Archaic (6500-4000 B.C.) occupation found anywhere in the state. Rarely has such an array of topics been addressed in a single monograph project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays chronicles the diversity and richness of one broad category of traditional material culture - fiber industries or textiles - among prehistoric and historic Native Americans in eastern North America. Such industries, which include basketry, fabrics, cordage, and netting, played an important role in the economic, social, and ceremonial life of indigenous cultures. However, because of the extreme age of the artifacts, their fragile nature, and unfavorable preservation conditions, knowledge of these industries has long been incomplete - resulting in a gap in scholarship that this volume does much to address.
