Book excerpt: This unique text draws on the tools of modern linguistics to help the student acquire an effective understanding of learned, specialized, and scientific vocabulary. English Vocabulary Elements (EVE) helps develop familiarity with over 350 Latin and Greek word elements in English, and shows how these roots are the building blocks within thousands of different words. Along the way the authors introduce and illustrate many of the fundamental concepts of linguistics. Offering a thorough approach to the expansion of vocabulary, EVE is an invaluable resource that provides students a deeper understanding of the language. This book will be useful to upper level high school students, undergraduates in English, Linguistics, and Classics departments, ESL students, and anyone interested in building vocabulary skills. This edition is refined and thoroughly updated. It includes updated cultural references, and the authors have revised and improved the pedagogy based on classroom experience. In particular they account for variations in pronunciation among students; clarify when historical details are important or peripheral; and improve the many examples and exercises that form the core of the book.
Book Synopsis Usable Social Science by : Neil J. Smelser
Download or read book Usable Social Science written by Neil J. Smelser and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Usable Social Science represents a remarkable collaboration between Neil J. Smelser, one of America’s most distinguished sociologists, and John Reed, a highly successful member of corporate America. Together, they accomplish an even more remarkable feat of making accumulated social science knowledge accessible to non-academics while, at the same time, making an academic contribution to the social sciences by reviewing the history, accumulated findings, and conceptual approaches in key areas of specialization in sociology and elsewhere in the social sciences."—Jonathan H. Turner, University Professor & Distinguished Professor of Sociology, University of California, Riverside. “This book is an ambitious project to provide the public with a review of the available and practicable knowledge for decision-making people (and who is not that today?) that the social sciences have produced over the last 250 years or so. Typically, such efforts are bound to fail. But this project is a full success, keeping its promise to present knowledge in an understandable and exciting way. The language is charming and the elegant prose is the product of a fluent, transparent style. In short: a must read!”—Hans-Peter Mueller, Professor of sociology, Humboldt-University of Berlin.

Book Synopsis Ways with Words by : Shirley Brice Heath
Download or read book Ways with Words written by Shirley Brice Heath and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-07-07 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ways with Words, first published in 1983, is a classic study of children learning to use language at home and at school in two communities only a few miles apart in the south-eastern United States. 'Roadville' is a white working-class community of families steeped for generations in the life of textile mills; 'Trackton' is an African-American working-class community whose older generations grew up farming the land, but whose existent members work in the mills. In tracing the children's language development the author shows the deep cultural differences between the two communities, whose ways with words differ as strikingly from each other as either does from the pattern of the townspeople, the 'mainstream' blacks and whites who hold power in the schools and workplaces of the region. Employing the combined skills of ethnographer, social historian, and teacher, the author raises fundamental questions about the nature of language development, the effects of literacy on oral language habits, and the sources of communication problems in schools and workplaces.

Book Synopsis Writing and Technique by : David N. Dobrin
Download or read book Writing and Technique written by David N. Dobrin and published by Urbana, Ill. : National Council of Teachers of English. This book was released on 1989 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the ways that writing is taught in this age of technology. The book begins with writing about "tools" (technical writing), considers writing itself as a tool, and concludes with tools that aid writing. The aim is to study the interpenetration of writing and technology in order to determine how technology has affected writing. The book is allied with a tradition of opposition to technology and to the main thrust of composition research over the last 10 years. Writing, it is concluded, is not reducible to technology because it is an activity rooted in meaning and human relations. Chapter topics cover: (1) the technology of writing; (2) common sense in communications; (3) technical writing; (4) information transfer; (5) objectivity of technical writing; (6) audience awareness; (7) use and purpose of outlines; (8) paragraph structure; and (9) computers and the techniques of writing. A summary chart of the discussion, notes, and reference list are appended. (RS)
