Book excerpt: Have you ever undergone a life-altering experience—the kind that most people would shudder to think of? These events occur daily, and as much empathy you may carry for others, your primary wish is likely that it will never happen to you. But such experiences shape our personalities and characters. The tragic event is not nearly as important as how we react to it and eventually learn to deal with and ultimately conquer it. Abled tells the story of an ordinary boy living a relatively ordinary life until one such tragic day, when his life was changed forever. This personal narrative follows his path from his youth as a normal boy to the man he develops into. He was far from perfect and yet filled with extreme positive energy and drive; he not only learned to overcome his limitations but far surpassed anyone’s expectations. The journey was beyond tough, and at times it seemed impossible. But despite the obstacles he faced, he dealt with his struggles and overcame them, using them to form the future he wanted. In this autobiography, one man shares the way an event in his youth changed his life forever, shaping the person he became, building his character, and developing his moral outlook.

Book excerpt: This edited collection explores the intersectionality of childhood and disability. Whereas available scholarship tends to concentrate on care-giving, parenting, or supporting and teaching children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, the contributors to this collection offer an engaging and accessible insight into childhoods that are impacted by disability and impairment. The discussions cut across traditional disciplinary divides and offer critical insights into the key issues that relate to disabled children and young people’s lives, encouraging the exploration of both disability and childhoods in their broadest terms. Dis/abled Childhoods? will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines including Special Educational Needs; Childhood Studies; Disability Studies; Youth Studies; and Health and Social Care.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In higher education systems, equal importance must be given to differently abled students. However, not all educational institutions have infrastructure and facilities to admit these students even though accessibility and support for these students is growing. There are many schemes, facilities, services, and financial assistance available to these students along with new assistive technologies that are making teaching and learning processes more effective. While using new technologies in education systems such as e-learning and blended learning, these students need special attention as well as some advanced training and additional features in the technology itself that better help them become familiar with it. Understanding the demands and requirements of differently abled students is the best way to provide them with quality education. Assistive Technologies for Differently Abled Students explores how to implement effective assistive technologies and other related services for providing differently abled students an education that is high quality and equal to their peers, enabling them to go on and excel in their field and obtain employment. Topics that are highlighted within this book include an overview for the different types of diverse assistive technologies for all types of students including students with visual impairments, learning disabilities, physical challenges, and more. This book is ideal for school administrators, researchers of higher educational institutes, non-governmental organizations, assistive technology experts, IT professionals, social workers, inservice and preservice teachers, teacher educators, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students looking for information on the types of assistive technologies being employed in education for all types of differently abled students.

Book excerpt: Tom Wilczewski was stricken with polio in August of 1949, two months before his fifth birthday. He was confined to an iron lung for over one year. In 1963 he graduated from A. Harry Moore High School, in Jersey City, New Jersey. After graduation he sought employment. It was a time when accessibility for the disabled was not part of societies concerns. He was given many excuses why he could not be hired. The underlying factor was he sat in a wheelchair. After much disappointment in seeking employment he started an engraving business with his brother Ed which they successfully operated for over thirty five years. November 27, 1984, was cold and dreary. On that day the life that Tom knew came to a screeching halt. An unscrupulous and incompetent construction crew that had been building a condominium next to his house had undermined the foundation of the home and his business. The family home and Toms business were destroyed. Tom in his wheelchair with his brother Ed and their nearly blind father barely escaped being trapped in the crumbling red brick dwelling. The Wilczewski family fought their way back from this devastating blow---Tom with his brother Ed started their business over again at another location in their downtown neighborhood. The high point in Toms life was marrying Antoinette who was equally accomplished and like Tom had polio.
