Book Synopsis A Study of the Effect of Selected Material Properties on the Ablation Performance of Artificial Graphite by : Howard G. Maahs
Download or read book A Study of the Effect of Selected Material Properties on the Ablation Performance of Artificial Graphite written by Howard G. Maahs and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteen material properties were measured on 45 different, commercially available, artificial graphites. Ablation performance of these same graphites were also measured in a Mach 2 airstream at a stagnation pressure of 5.6 atm. Correlations were developed, where possible, between pairs of the material properties. Multiple regression equations were then formulated relating ablation performance to the various material properties, thus identifying those material properties having the strongest effect on ablation performance. These regression equations reveal that ablation performance in the present test environment depends primarily on maximum grain size, density, ash content, thermal conductivity, and mean pore radius. For optimization of ablation performance, grain size should be small, ash content low, density and thermal conductivity high, and mean pore radius large.

Book Synopsis Graphite and Precursors by : Pierre Delhaes
Download or read book Graphite and Precursors written by Pierre Delhaes and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-12-21 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans first used carbon as chars from firewood in ritual paintings and primitive metallurgical processes. Natural forms of carbon have been known since antiquity, yet the knowledge of the carbon element in chemistry and its technical applications on a larger scale are a relatively recent development. The industrial revolution in Europe two centuries ago led the way to the numerous applications of these graphitic forms that are still used today. Graphite and Precursors features short tutorial articles on different topics related to the science and technology of carbons intended for engineers, students of Materials Science and scientists who are seeking a fundamental understanding without "reinventing the wheel." This first volume of the World of Carbon book series focuses on graphite and its precursors, including its origin and various implications. The basic properties of hexagonal graphite are developed, and several theoretical and experimental approaches explain why this crystalline solid is fascinating in solid state physics. Also featured are the numerous applications connected to thermal, mechanical and chemical graphites, as well as their various industrial uses in polycrystalline form. Finally, carbon precursors are introduced.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Carbon, Graphite, Diamonds and Fullerenes by : Hugh O. Pierson
Download or read book Handbook of Carbon, Graphite, Diamonds and Fullerenes written by Hugh O. Pierson and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 1993 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a review of the science and technology of the element carbon and its allotropes: graphite, diamond and the fullerenes. This field has expanded greatly in the last three decades stimulated by many major discoveries such as carbon fibers, low-pressure diamond and the fullerenes. These carbon materials are very different in structure and properties. Some are very old (charcoal), others new (the fullerenes). They have different applications and markets and are produced by different segments of the industry.
