Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norfolk to Abadan and the Long Way Home: A Story of USS Soley (DD-707) 1956-1957, is the narrative of a destroyer during the Cold War Era. Detached from the Sixth Fleet and sent to the Middle East for a tour of duty with COMIDEASTFOR prior to the 1956 joint British/French invasion of Egypt, USS Soley in company with USS Barton made the transit of the Suez Canal and suddenly found their selves stranded east of Suez due to its war related closing. This unforeseen incident resulted in an unprecedented 15,000 mile voyage home which began in Abadan, Iran, and ended in their home port of Norfolk, Virginia, fifty-five days after being detached from the Middle East. Based on the personal journals and observations of the author, with excerpts provided by Captain Charles H. Witten USN, (Retired), Commanding Officer, USS Soley (DD-707), 1955-1957, from his Unpublished Autobiography, this is the story of life aboard a destroyer as experienced by a young seaman serving his enlistment who found himself in a rare position to see a large part of the world before its present day drastic changes took place.

Book Synopsis Sunrise at Abadan by : Richard A. Stewart
Download or read book Sunrise at Abadan written by Richard A. Stewart and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-11-21 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunrise at Abadan, portraying the dramatic events leading to the United States' deep involvement in Iran, sets the historic stage for the current crisis in the Persian Gulf region. It rapidly traces the ebb ad flow of Anglo-Russian rivalry over Persia from the reign of Peter the Great to World War II. By late summer of 1941, the Allies were reeling in defeat as Axis forces advaced triumphantly on all fronts. In a desperate move to avert Nazi victory, the British and Soviet governments suspended their political struggle for control of the Persian Gulf and jointly invaded neutral Iran. This controversial action toppled the powerful Shah, secured the vital Persian Gulf oil fields and opened the primary route for U.S. military aid to the beleaguered Soviet Union. Richard A. Stewart describes the rise to power of the late Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi and the events leading to the U.S. and Soviet confrontation over Iran in 1946. Carefully documented, his book raises important legal and moral questions about Allied actions while depicting the fate of a small but proud nation caught in a highstakes game of geopoliical intrigue, doublecross and shifting alliances. Sunrise at Abadan will stimulate the informed general reader while its original research will aid scholars of political science, Middle East studies, Soviet history and policy, and military studies.

Download or read book A Voyage to Abadan written by Bill Jopes and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 1999-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of the sea training and service during World War II of two Cadet Midshipmen of the United States Merchant Marine Corps. Only about six thousand cadets were trained during the war, a situation which left these men largely unknown and unidentifiable when on leave. The uniform was much the same as a navy midshipmans uniform and was marked with a USNR emblem. The cadet was, in fact, a midshipman in the U.S. Navy Reserve. The purpose of the corps was to supply officers for the merchant ships being built at a rapid rate for the war effort. There was a danger of there being more ships than there were crews to sail them. The accelerated curriculum undergone by these men was designed for three months basic training, six months sea duty and six months at the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. Upon graduation, a third mate or third engineers license was issued. Near the end of the war the final training at the academy was extended to one year. After the war, this became a full-time four-year program similar to that at Annapolis. This is a story typical of that of any U.S. merchant ship during wartime. It explores the problems caused by untrained crews, disregarded safety rules, boredom, danger, and storms. However, the men of the Yamhill lead something of a renegade life not usually experienced in running in convoy across the Atlantic. The fact that this voyage lasted nearly a year, traveling halfway around the world alone, operating in all the war zones, visiting seventeen foreign ports, and undergoing several thrilling adventures gives this story perhaps a little extra vitality. For example, there is a day-long battle with a Japanese submarine. The spectacle of a slow, plodding merchant tanker out-dueling a Japanese man o war in a one-on-one engagement puts it high in the chronicles of merchant marine battles with the enemy. For present-day sailors who may wonder about life at sea on board a merchant ship during World War II, this book gives a look into the past and an acquaintance with the wartime merchant marine. For those who were there, it will bring back the memories that may be fast fading away.
Book Synopsis Turks in Europe by : Nermin Abadan-Unat
Download or read book Turks in Europe written by Nermin Abadan-Unat and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the foremost scholars on Turkish migration, the author offers in this work the summary of her experiences and research on Turkish migration since 1963. During these forty years her aim has been threefold: to explain the journeys made by thousands of Turkish men and women to foreign lands out of choice, necessity, or invitation; to shed light on the difficulties they faced; and to elaborate on how their lives were affected by the legal, political, social, and economic measures in the countries where they settled. The extensive research done both in Turkey and in Europe into the lives of individuals directly and indirectly affected by the migration phenomenon and the examination of these research results further enhances the value of this wide-ranging study as a definitive reference work.
