This book was released on 2015-09-20 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the key original sources about the history of Wales in the Middle Ages. It lists and chronicles the history of Wales from the end of the seventh century to the year 1332. Of the original thirteenth century Latin text no copy has survived, but three independent Welsh translations are extant. In this volume Professor Thomas Jones gives an English translation of the Peniarth MS. 20 version, which is the most complete of the three. The detailed Notes show the many discrepancies in the three Welsh versions as compared with one another, and, used in conjunction with the text, they supply the combined substantial evidence of three Welsh versions and so of the lost Latin chronicles which underlies them.

Book Synopsis Writing a Small Nation's Past by : Neil Evans
Download or read book Writing a Small Nation's Past written by Neil Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume to examine how the history of Wales was written in a period that saw the emergence of professional historiography, largely focused on the nation, across Europe and in the United States. It thus sets Wales in the context of recent work on national history writing in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and, more particularly, offers a Welsh perspective on the ways in which history was written in small, mainly stateless, nations. The comparative dimension is fundamental to the volume's aim, highlighting what was distinctive about Welsh historical writing and showing how the Welsh experience mirrors and illuminates broader historiographical developments. The book begins with an introduction that uses the concept of historical culture as a way of exploring the different strands of historiography covered in the collection, providing orientation to the chapters that follow. These are divided into four sections: 'Contexts and Backgrounds', 'Amateurs and Popularizers', 'Creating Academic Disciplines', and 'Comparative Perspectives'. All these themes are then drawn together in the conclusion to examine how far Welsh historians exemplify widespread trends in the writing of national history, and thereby point-up common themes that emerge from the volume and clarify its broader significance for students of historiography.
Book Synopsis The Gentry of North Wales in the Later Middle Ages by : Antony D Carr
Download or read book The Gentry of North Wales in the Later Middle Ages written by Antony D Carr and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the landed gentry of north Wales from the Edwardian conquest in the thirteenth century to the incorporation of Wales in the Tudor state in the sixteenth. The limitation of the discussion to north Wales is deliberate; there has often been a tendency to treat Wales as a single region, but it is important to stress that, like any other country, it is itself made up of regions and that a uniformity based on generalisation cannot be imposed. This book describes the development of the gentry in one part of Wales from an earlier social structure and an earlier pattern of land tenure, and how the gentry came to rule their localities. There have been a number of studies of the medieval English gentry, usually based on individual counties, but the emphasis in a Welsh study is not necessarily the same as that in one relating to England. The rich corpus of medieval poetry addressed to the leaders of native society and the wealth of genealogical material and its potential are two examples of this difference in emphasis.
