This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grapples with the numerous risks organizations face in order to succeed. These include economic risks, disaster risks, supply-chain risks, regulatory risks, and technology risks, all of which affect organizations in different ways and in varying degrees. Referencing Mahatma Gandhi’s seven unethical behaviors in the business world—wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, commerce without morality, science without humanity, religion without sacrifice, and politics without principle—the authors analyze the healthcare sector. As competition in the health sector increases, there has also been a rise in unethical behavior. Corruption in the health sector results in severe consequences as it could affect the health of millions. This volume explores fraud schemes and cases, legislation to avoid cheating, lack of law, transparency, ethical issues, corporate governance and transparency in the health and pharmaceutical sector bringing together the perspectives of practitioners, professionals, as well as academic authors.

Book Synopsis The Fragile Contract by : David H. Guston
Download or read book The Fragile Contract written by David H. Guston and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a crisis in the relations between research universities and the federal government? Is our system, which has been the most successful in the world, breaking down? The Fragile Contract brings together essays by scientists, university leaders, scholars, and seasoned science watchers from government agencies and nonprofit groups to address this issue. Neither advocacy nor polemic, it explores the social contexts for and influences on research in the university setting to encourage greater understanding of core issues by both politicians and scientists. The contributors offer concrete suggestions for building the foundation of a firmer contract that reflects current realities. The Fragile Contract appears at a time when congressional committees have openly questioned whether scientists are capable of policing fraud in their own ranks, and when fundamental agreements that have covered reimbursements to the universities throughout the post-World War II period have been called into question. It also addresses the problems of finding science after the Cold War and as well as the problems faced by universities in an international context. The Fragile Contract reveals that we are seeing not so much a crisis as a reflection of changing times: Neither science nor government is the same institution that it was when the modern social contract between the two was forged in the late 1940s. The authors agree that all parties must make major adjustments to the new environment, and research universities must become more active in promoting links to the local and national community. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fossil fuels are a finite resource, and their continued use as the world's dominant energy supply is damaging the environment. Future use of alternative methods of energy supply is inescapable, and this book explores the historical origins, technical features, marketability, and environmental impacts of the complete range of sustainable energy technologies: solar, biomass, wind, hydropower, geothermal power, ocean-energy sources, solar-derived hydrogen fuel, and energy storage. The aim is to inform policy analysts and decision makers of the options available for sustainable energy production. The book is therefore written so as to be accessible to an audience from a broad range of backgrounds and scientific training. It will also be a valuable supplementary text for advanced courses in environmental studies, energy economics and policy, and engineering.

Book Synopsis Downsizing Science by : Kenneth M. Brown
Download or read book Downsizing Science written by Kenneth M. Brown and published by American Enterprise Institute Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Federal support for science and technology, after decades of growth, has been declining for several years and faces even deeper cuts as a result of future efforts to balance the budget. In this book, Kenneth Brown assesses the likely consequences of tighter science budgets and suggests ways in which U.S. science can come to terms with downsizing. After discussing the traditional justifications for governmental support of science, the author analyzes their validity. What can we infer about a future in which the private sector will inevitable play a greater role in scientific research? he asks. The book focuses particularly on the effects of reduced support for research at universities and federal laboratories and considers ramifications for the future international standing of U.S. science.
