Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The newcomer to the field of clinical chemistry is faced with the daunting prospect of understanding the ever increasing aspects of the subject: new techniques, tests, terminology, methods of diagnosing diseases and other advances which relate to clinical chemistry. The aim of this book is to provide basic information regarding all branches of the subject which the trainee will need to understand. The book should also provide a basis for answering many of the examination questions of clinical chemistry. It is therefore hoped that this book will prove useful to any person starting a career in clinical chemistry, be that person a laboratory scientific officer, graduate or trainee pathologist. Wherever possible, suggestions for further reading are given. Many subjects are so broad however that the reader is referred to the general list of analytical and clinical textbooks supplied at the end of the book. My grateful thanks are extended to the three ladies who typed this manuscript: Christine Cliffe, Margaret Donnelly and Judith Hardy. I would like to thank Dr Brian Wisdom of Queens University, Belfast for his suggestions on the entry "Enzyme-immunoassay". Finally my thanks go to Mr Martin Lister of MTP Press for his help and encouragement in this venture. W. H. ASHTON-UNDER-L YNE APRIL 1980 vii A ABETALIPOPROTEINAEMIA A rare hereditary disorder in which there is a complete absence of j3-lipoprotein, pre:f3-1ipoprotein and chylomicrons. It presents clinically as ataxia and malabsorption with steatorrhoea. Thorny shaped erythrocytes (acanthocytes) are a feature of the disease.

Book excerpt: Clinical Chemistry is a comprehensive textbook covering the area of medical science variously known as chemical pathology, clinical chemistry, medical biochemistry and clinical biochemistry. The biochemical processes and physiological interrelationships, of tissues, organs and molecules are discussed in the context of disease processes and related to the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of disease. Also included are analytical processes, such as immunoassay, and how these relate to clinical practice. Although the emphasis of this book is clinical biochemistry, some chapters include sections on haematology, radiology and microbiology where this helps in the understanding of disease processes. The increasing use of the techniques of molecular biology and genetics in the investigation of disease is acknowledged also by appropriate inclusion of these disciplines in a number of chapters. Standard International (SI) units of measurement are used throughout, but for tests where non-SI units are in common use as well as SI units both sets of units are quoted.

It discusses the principles and analytical techniques in clinical chemistry. It addresses the basic understanding of chemical pathology. Some of the topics covered in the book are basic principles of metabolic chemistry; disorders of carbohydrate metabolism; nitrogen metabolism; inborn errors of metabolism; chemical endocrinology; assessment of hormonal function; liver function; the formation of bile; and the synthesis and metabolism of amino acids and protein. The storage of carbohydrates and removal of toxic substances from the body are covered. The assessment of liver function is discussed. The text describes the renal function and acid-base metabolism. A study of the renal tubular reabsorption and excretion is presented. A chapter is devoted to the hydrogen ion concentration and analytical techniques in potentiometric determination. Another section focuses on the measurement of osmolality. The book can provide useful information to scientists, physicists, doctors, students, and researchers.

Clinical Chemistry: Fundamentals and Laboratory Techniques prepares you for success as a medical lab technician by simplifying complex chemistry concepts and lab essentials including immunoassays, molecular diagnostics, and quality control. A pathophysiologic approach covers diseases that are commonly diagnosed through chemical tests — broken down by body system and category — such as respiratory, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular conditions. Written by clinical chemistry educator Donna Larson and a team of expert contributors, this full-color book is ideal for readers who may have minimal knowledge of chemistry and are learning laboratory science for the first time. Full-color illustrations and design simplify complex concepts and make learning easier by highlighting important material. Case studies help you apply information to real-life scenarios. Pathophysiology and Analytes section includes information related to diseases or conditions, such as a biochemistry review, disease mechanisms, clinical correlation, and laboratory analytes and assays. Evolve companion website includes case studies and animations that reinforce what you’ve learned from the book. Laboratory Principles section covers safety, quality assurance, and other fundamentals of laboratory techniques. Review questions at the end of each chapter are tied to the learning objectives, helping you review and retain the material. Critical thinking questions and discussion questions help you think about and apply key points and concepts. Other Aspects of Clinical Chemistry section covers therapeutic drug monitoring, toxicology, transplantation, and emergency preparedness. Learning objectives in each chapter help you to remember key points or to analyze and synthesize concepts in clinical chemistry. A list of key words Is provided at the beginning of each chapter, and these are also bolded in the text. Chapter summaries consist of bulleted lists and tables highlighting the most important points of each chapter. In this, the first book-length history of clinical chemistry, those involved or interested in the field will read about who and what went before them and how the profession came to its present state of clinical importance. The narrative reconstructs the origins of clinical chemistry in the seventeenth century and traces its often obscure path of development in the shadow of organic chemistry, physiology and biochemistry until it assumes its own identity at the beginning of the twentieth century. The chronological development of the story reveals the varied roots from which modern clinical chemistry arose.

It is fully comprehensive and highly suitable for use by junior hospital doctors and candidates for postgraduate examinations. A companion 'Workbook' containing multiple choice questions, data interpretation exercises and illustrative case-histories is also available. The new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated by Philip Mayne, co-author of the fifth edition. The philosophy of previous editions - to cover the entire field of chemical pathology at a level suitable for undergraduate students whilst emphasizing the problems most commonly encountered in clinical practice - remains unchanged.
