There has arisen a jealousy between the pen and the pulpit. Whether to write is more prolific than to speak; whether it is better and wiser and more fruitful to stereotype one's thoughts than to convey them to the multitude by word of mouth, is a matter for discussion which may make one pause. Have printed sermons done as much as spoken discourses? So much may be said in favor of either side that it might be preferable to consider the topic as one which admits of illimitable dispute, and, therefore, neutrality is the most justifiable attitude. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Woman in Modern Life This little book is an attempt to set forth in plain and simple terms some of the prob lems with which the Young Woman in Modern Life is bound to concern herself. It is written from the standpoint of one who believes that with women, to a greater degree than with men, lies the weal and woe of To-morrow. The coming woman may vote or not. I neither know nor care. But it is not by means of the ballot that she will yield her greatest power over the still plastic mass of our young democracy. Many a man sinks down to hell because of her, who would as readily follow her to heaven. This may be weakness on the part of the man; but we are dealing with the facts, and this is a fact. Book excerpt: A pioneering, dazzling satire about a biracial black girl from Philadelphia searching for her Jewish father in New York City Oreo is raised by her maternal grandparents in Philadelphia. Her black mother tours with a theatrical troupe, and her Jewish deadbeat dad disappeared when she was an infant, leaving behind a mysterious note that triggers her quest to find him. What ensues is a playful, modernized parody of the classical odyssey of Theseus with a feminist twist, immersed in seventies pop culture, and mixing standard English, black vernacular, and Yiddish with wisecracking aplomb. Oreo, our young hero, navigates the labyrinth of sound studios and brothels and subway tunnels in Manhattan, seeking to claim her birthright while unwittingly experiencing and triggering a mythic journey of self-discovery like no other.

Book excerpt: Provides the requisite knowledge and practical guidelines for some of the most common counseling situations. Today's rabbis, in addition to being spiritual leaders of their congregations, are also expected to be competent counselors to members of their community. Yet rabbis often feel inadequately prepared for the difficult challenges of their counseling role. To many, rabbinic counseling appears deceptively simple, requiring no more than good intuition, fair judgment and sincere empathy. Good counseling, in reality, is a complex process requiring a combination of knowledge, skill, self-awareness and an understanding of human dynamics. This groundbreaking book—written specifically for community rabbis and religious counselors—reflects the wisdom of seasoned professionals, who provide clear guidelines and sensible strategies for effective rabbinic counseling.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commendations From Eminent Men and Women: What a Young Woman Ought to Know During a number of years it has been my privilege to be the confidante and counsellor of a large number of young women of various stations in life and in all parts of the United States. These girls have talked freely with me con cerning their plans, aspirations, fears and per sonal problems. It has been a great revelation to me to note with what unanimity they ask certain questions concerning conduct - queries which perhaps might astonish the mothers of those same girls, as they, doubtless, take it for granted that their daughters intuitively under stand these fundamental laws of propriety. The truth is that many girls who have been taught in the ologies of the schools, who have been trained in the conventionalities of society, have been left to pick up as they may their ideas upon personal conduct, and, coming face to face with puzzling problems, are at a loss. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? This predication must be made care fully, and understood as it is intended. There are many ways in which the two sexes can be compared and contrasted, in some of which the one, and in some of which the other, would have to be accorded precedence. When, therefore, I assert woman's superiority, it requires to be pre mised that I am not thinking of her strength, nor of her capabilities of effect, but purely and simply of the intrinsic quality of womanly fiber. Quite apart from all that She does and the Sphere of her activities, the question comes upon the mat ter of her personal texture, the refinement of its organization, and it is with that only in mind that I want to claim for her a clear and easy supremacy.
