Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gordon Christensen and Geneva Noren were born in different parts of the country and into different hard times. Gordon grew up in the south end of Seattle in the 1920s, where his family faced many struggles in the "New Land" to which they had moved after World War I. Geneva was raised on a small farm in Dust Bowl Kansas where faith in God was the family's greatest hope. God proved His love and care for these young people as they learned to trust in Him in any adversity--lessons that would be the key to life or death as these young Christians found each other, and found their way onto the mission field in the Belgian Congo. Their adventures, escapes, and discoveries underscore these truths about their God: He is all powerful, all loving, and everywhere present.
Book Synopsis Health for All by : Daniel E. Fountain
Download or read book Health for All written by Daniel E. Fountain and published by William Carey Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Dan Fountain and his wife arrived in the Congo in 1961, the challenges to effective medical missions seemed overwhelming. As the only doctor for a quarter of a million residents of the Vanga Health Zone, and with nothing but a dilapidated mission hospital and an undertrained staff to run it, Dr. Fountain turned to prayer, innovation, and local partnerships to meet the vast needs of his area. Health for All tells the story of an ever-increasing vision from curative care to community health, from a barely functioning hospital to a network of successful health services, from a lack of qualified workers to a local residency training program, from biomedical reductionism to whole person care, from cultural stalemate to worldview transformation. Dr. Fountain s insights into health and wholeness have changed countless lives and communities. Part memoir, part history, part textbook, Health for All is the legacy of a man who patterned his life and labor after that of the Great Physician."

Book Synopsis Church, State and Colonialism in Southeastern Congo, 1890–1962 by : Reuben A. Loffman
Download or read book Church, State and Colonialism in Southeastern Congo, 1890–1962 written by Reuben A. Loffman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between Catholic missionaries and the colonial administration in southeastern Belgian Congo. It challenges the perception that the Church and the state worked seamlessly together. Instead, using the territory of Kongolo as a case study, the book reconfigures their relationship as one of competitive co-dependency. Based on extensive archival research and oral histories, the book argues that both institutions retained distinct agendas that, while coinciding during certain periods, clashed on many occasions. The study begins by outlining the pre-colonial history of southeastern Congo. The second chapter examines how the Church began its encounters with the peoples in Kongolo and the Tanganyika province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Subsequent chapters highlight how missionaries exerted significant influence over the colonial construction of chieftainship and the politics of Congolese decolonization. The book ends in 1962, with the massacre of a number of Holy Ghost Fathers in an event that signaled the beginning of a more Africanized Church in Kongolo. ‘The author gratefully acknowledges support from the Economic and Social Research Council in the completion of this project.’

Download or read book The Last Missionary written by Bob Walters and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Last Missionary is a bicycle adventure story set in remote districts in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Bob Walters travels with a team of Congolese colleagues discovering the state of the villages run over by the Pan-African war that devastated the region’s people through the terror of rape and the killing of millions. Along the way, Bob offers the reader a number of short tutorials and reflections on missiology, the study of mission systems. He ponders patronage and cargo cults, and asks the question, “Is Jesus the answer?” But this is not an answer book, it is a book in search of better questions. The Last Missionary is a challenge to both evangelicals and progressives in the church, missionaries and mission volunteers, and even non-religious aid workers.
