Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy as I Have Known It: 1849-1899 In speaking of half a century I am strictly correct, as I entered the Navy 8th May '49, and my last active appointment as commander-in-chief at Plymouth expired on June 1899, though I remained on the active list till 15th June 1901, when I attained the age of sixty five, and in accordance with the Orders in Council, I was placed on the retired list. I was accordingly over fifty two years on the active list. It was a great gratification to me to be able to celebrate my fiftieth anniversary of entry into the Navy while still on active service in high command, an experience which can naturally fall to the lot of few Naval, and of still fewer Military officers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Our Navy In these days, when efficiency is demanded in every occupation, young readers can readily understand that, where forces are even, Victories in war come about, as a rule, not because one Side is so much braver or more patriotic than the other, but because one Side does better thinking and better Shooting. Now the modern historical spirit is based upon research and guided by impartial inquiry, and the application of modern methods gives a broader View than the Older' naval histories which emphasized blood and smoke and victory, and exalted one side at the expense of the other. The modern view-point adds much to the picture, for it shows not only the pre-eminent influence of brains, science, discipline, and target practice, but also the vital importance of freedom from political influence, and the high part which sea power plays in general history. It is certain that the splendid record of our navy will gain in brilliancy when set against the larger background. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the United States Navy This history owed its origin to the need of a work suit able in scope and treatment as a text-book for the midship men of the United States Naval Academy. Since, in a tentative form, it has been used by them with gratifying results, there is hope that it may prove of interest and value to others whose time for this subject is limited. It has been written with certain definite aims, the principal of which are the following: First, to present a record of exactly what happened, without personal, sectional, or national prejudice. Second, to regard naval events from the professional rather than the picturesque point of view; for example, to emphasize the maneuvering and gunnery in an action rather than the smoke and blood. Third, to suppress the trivial and bring o'ut the important, not neglecting the services of officers in time of peace. Fourth, to give, whenever possible, the original sources, such as letters from secretaries of the navy, and official reports of officers. These official reports, we feel, are of singular value. The fighter writes as he shoots - straight to the mark. He may be prejudiced in favor of his own flag, but his account is usually more sportsmanlike than are the corresponding accounts of his countrymen who were not there to see, and has a unique interest that no rewriting ever attains. In the following pages will be found reports by both friends and foes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prentice-Hall Tax Service for 1919 This allowance is not based upon the difference between the actual war cost of such facilities and what they would have cost at pre-war prices. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. As the rule is expressed in Article 183 of the Regulations: The total amount to be extinguished by amortization, in general, is the excess of the unextinguished or unrecovered cost of the property over its maximum value (either for sale or for use as part of the plant or equipment of a going business) under stable post war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States Navy IN preparing this volume the writer has been animated by a desire to tell, in one convenient volume, that might be sold at a moderate price, the whole story of our navy - to describe all the important naval battles, and to show how the nation has been affected at certain times by the work of its naval ships, and at other times by the want of such a force. All battles that have had any influence upon the wars in which the nation has been engaged, or upon the evolution of ships of war, or upon the character of our naval men, or of the nation, have been deemed important herein. Any con sideration of the facts shows that our sailors were animated, in most of their battles, by the knowledge that they were fighting for the very life of the nation, and it is therefore not too much to say that a description of such a fight must be a hero story, however told. Frankly, it was in the be lief that every history of our navy claims attention first of all as a hero story that this one was written. To all whose information, advice, and encouragement were helpful in the production of The Second Admiral, a Life of David Dixon Porter, 1813-1893, and of Gideon Welles: Lincoln's Navy Department, the writer is happy again to acknowledge grati tude, for these earlier books were spadework for the present one. Particularly is he grateful to Charles Lee Lewis, Professor Emeritus, U. S. Naval Academy, his first mentor in the field of naval history, and to Professor Louis H Bolander, librarian of the U. S. Naval Academy, retired, whose wide knowledge and cheerful assistance in research have informed many pages in this book.
