Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types of Canadian Women and of Women Who Are or Have Been Connected With Canada, Vol. 1 After four years of almost uninterrupted labour, mainly of research, I have the satisfaction of placing this first volume of the "Types of Canadian Women" before the public. My satisfaction is blended with sincere gratitude for the patriotic sympathy and generous help to which such measure of success as I have attained has been largely due. From the first announcement of my purpose, suggestions, reminders, references flowed in upon me from near and far. I was thus often brought within reach of information that would otherwise have remained hidden from me. I shall have an opportunity by and by of expressing my thanks more fully to the most cordial and effective of such coadjutors. Meanwhile, they cannot be better represented than by the names of Lord Strathcona, the Honourable Mr. Justice Baby, the Hon. Mr. Justice Girouard, Sir Sandford Fleming, the Hon. Senator Gowan, C.M.G., and Mr. John Reade, whose good-will, expressed in so many ways, I justly and gladly acknowledge. I am also thankful in another and larger sense. Arduous though the research (which involved the writing of thousands of letters) has necessarily been, I never for a moment had reason to rue my undertaking. If it sometimes caused weariness of the flesh, the languor was dispelled by refreshings of the patriotic heart as ever new surprises disclosed the wealth of the mine which it was my happy lot to have opened to the world. That this good fortune should have fallen to me was doubtless due to the fact that I had been so long engaged in biographic investigation. For almost half a century I had been eagerly watching the careers, at home and abroad, of the more distinguished of my fellow-countrymen. In such a pursuit I could not fail to be attracted to the rare deserts of many Canadian women. These have due places assigned to them in previous publications of mine. We are out of reach of Sunday School and friends - tell me of a book which will give my girl a wider outlook, which will open her eyes to her chances in life." The thought of that girl on her lonely farm recurred to me time and again till at length I decided to write down practically as spoken, one after another of my talks with my girls. I am conscious that I might have gone further, that I might have touched a few more of the outstanding professions, a few more of the stirring girl-problems of to-day. I have only steered, so to speak, from island to island in the ever-widening sea of women's activities. But the line of approach, after all, is the same in every profession. One can but try to give a glimpse, a vision. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But, as it deals with the Metric System, and not that in common use, its chief interest to the general public is that it is a step in bringing Canada into line with other nations. It enacts that the basic units of the metric system shall be the International Metre and the International Kilogramme confirmed in the year 1889 by the first International Conference of Weights and Measures, and deposited at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Queen's and Canada Co-education, so far as university life in Canada is con cerned, began in Queen's. Women were admitted, to begin with, to the Faculty of Arts. The question then arose why they should not be allowed to study Medicine. The thing had not hitherto been done in Canada, but it was done here. The very novelty of the scheme attracted a singularly able group of women. There were, however, difficulties not a few in the carry ing on of a medical school for men and women where the schoolitself was small. Consequently, when the University of Toronto opened the doors of its medical faculty to women, Queen's decided to restrict its work in this field to men. The Extra-mural system, which has been of such benefit to teachers throughout the Dominion, began almost by accident. Students with the long summer vacation before them used to ask their professors for guidance in their reading. Gradually this counsel came to be increasingly important till the question arose, as to whether credit might not be given for such reading provided the student possessed the necessary academic require ments for entering upon a course of university study, followed the University curriculum in his reading, and passed the same examinations as the student attending the classes in Queen's. The idea was not in itself new. London University had shown the Way. But the conditions in Canada made the problem largely new, and the regulations governing it have been modified con siderably as the result of the long years of trial. The system, however, has been of the greatest value to the Dominion. Every where one meets men in high positions in the educational world who received their opportunity through the Extra-mural system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lillian, or Woman's Endurance: A Narrative Connected With the Early History of Canada and the American Revolution ON one of those stormy nights that can perhaps be experienced only in Lower Canada, when it is impossible to judge with certainty how soon the wind will veer, or from which point of the compass it will next come, - the snow driving with a fury and an impetuosity that may emphatically be termed Canadian, or whirling in every direction in eddies, large and small, according to the size of the obstruction that diverts it or impedes its progress, and in places forming drifts that must be seen tofully realize their magnitude, - while such a storm is raging, we will enter one of those snug and comfortable white washed cottages in the neighborhood of the Quebec Barracks, in the city of Montreal, as it appeared in the latter part of the last century. But before doing so we will take a cursory glance at its exterior. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But some will say life has more serious ends than to be frittered away in creating or in beholding mere bubbles. This is true to a. Certain extent; yet even in bubbles there may be found matter of important observation. And touches of beauty sug gestives of ideas refining to the taste and softening to the disposition.
