The story revolves around the citizens of Thrums and more especially the members of one of the four churches in that community, of which the Auld Licht Kirk happens to be more committed Calvinist's than any other group in Scotland. The novel shows how a church, no matter how well intended, can become twisted by a human attempt at perfection. A Window in Thrums is another tale of a small Scottish town of Thrums, where an invalid old lady watches her world from the window. She witnesses various events in this early 20th century place where small occurrences take on great importance. The Little Minister – Gavin Dishart is a slight of frame young man, determined to take his corner of the world by storm. He becomes the minister in Thrums and idol of the community, but he falls in love with free spirited Babbie and their romance is not well received among the citizens of Thrums. As her full background comes to light, things get complicated for Gavin. Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937) was a Scottish novelist and playwright, best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan. He was born and educated in Scotland but moved to London, where he met the Llewelyn Davies boys, who inspired him to write about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens, then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, a "fairy play" about an ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland.

Book excerpt: AULD LICHT IDYLLS A collection of stories of Scottish life, charmingly written, full of the grace and humor that characterize this writer's productions. If there is a drawback to the pleasure of reading them, it is the want of a glossary to give the benighted English reader some notion of the meaning of Scotch "wut." We regard the 'Auld Licht Idylls' as having paved the way for Mr. Barrie's subsequent books. The Auld Lichts were a section of godly professors who seceded from a secession. They prided themselves on the purity of their gospel faith, on the consistency of their walk and conversation, and above all on the stringency of their ceremonial observances. That they could keep a minister for themselves in the paltry townlet of Thrums was the crowning proof of their zeal and earnestness ...This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Book excerpt: Long before J. M. Barrie gained lasting fame for Peter Pan, the author contented himself by writing about his native homeland of Scotland. Although critics have discounted Barrie's early work as "sentimental and nostalgic depictions of a parochial Scotland, far from the realities of the industrialised nineteenth century," his stories of rural, country life provide a necessary critique of modernity, following a similar, regionalistic trajectory of Robert Frost and Edgar Lee Masters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Window in Thrums - the story of the "untrue son" - is one of several novels about the fictional village of Thrums, said to be modeled on Barrie's home town of Kirriemuir.Written by J. M. Barrie, the Scottish novelist and dramatist who is best known for inventing the character of Peter Pan. Barrie's first novels were set in Kirriemuir, Scotland, which he referred to as "Thrums" (his father worked as a weaver). His Thrums novels were hugely successful when they were published, including Auld Licht Idylls (1888) and The Little Minister (1891)......... Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM (9 May 1860 - 19 June 1937) was a Scottish novelist and playwright, best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan. He was born and educated in Scotland but moved to London, where he wrote a number of successful novels and plays. There he met the Llewelyn Davies boys, who inspired him to write about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens (included in The Little White Bird), then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, a "fairy play" about an ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland. Although he continued to write successfully, Peter Pan overshadowed his other work, and is credited with popularising the then-uncommon name Wendy.Barrie unofficially adopted the Davies boys following the deaths of their parents. Barrie was made a baronet by George V on 14 June 1913, and a member of the Order of Merit in the 1922 New Year Honours. Before his death, he gave the rights to the Peter Pan works to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, which continues to benefit from them. James Matthew Barrie was born in Kirriemuir, Angus to a conservative Calvinist family. His father David Barrie was a modestly successful weaver. His mother Margaret Ogilvy had assumed her deceased mother's household responsibilities at the age of eight. Barrie was the ninth child of ten (two of whom died before he was born), all of whom were schooled in at least the three Rs in preparation for possible professional careers. When he was 6 years old, Barrie's next-older brother David (his mother's favourite) died two days before his 14th birthday in an ice-skating accident. This left his mother devastated, and Barrie tried to fill David's place in his mother's attentions, even wearing David's clothes and whistling in the manner that he did. One time, Barrie entered her room and heard her say, "Is that you?" "I thought it was the dead boy she was speaking to," wrote Barrie in his biographical account of his mother Margaret Ogilvy (1896), "and I said in a little lonely voice, 'No, it's no' him, it's just me.'" Barrie's mother found comfort in the fact that her dead son would remain a boy forever, never to grow up and leave her.Eventually, Barrie and his mother entertained each other with stories of her brief childhood and books such as Robinson Crusoe, works by fellow Scotsman Walter Scott, and The Pilgrim's Progress.....
