Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to follow the Prince of Peace in a world plagued by war, violence, and killing? Can the foundational convictions of Christianity, and the experiences of Christians around the world, contribute to a more adequate practice of the faith in contemporary times on matters of war, violence, and peacemaking? This volume addresses these important questions with contributions from Christian scholars and practitioners from across the Majority World (including El Salvador, Brazil, Kenya, and the Philippines) and from the United States and Europe. They include proponents of Christian pacifism and just war theory, advocates for varieties of “just peacemaking” frameworks, and people pursuing slow, modest steps toward reconciling enemies without the use of overarching theoretical frameworks. What holds them together is a sense that the world and the church would benefit from a robust and gospel-based commitment to nonviolence as an alternative to lethal business as usual in addressing conflicts great and small. The topics they consider include constructive aspects of a Christian theology of nonviolence; case studies of gospel nonviolence and pastoral work from violent conflicts around the world; women as victims of violence and makers of peace; and theopolitical questions of just war, armed intervention, and Christian nonviolence.

Over the next twenty-five years, they all struggle with loss, grief, and mourning. Daughter Harriet and son Nat attempt to fill the void Eddie left behind: Harriet becomes a chemist despite an inhospitable culture for career women in the 1940s and ’50s, hoping to move into the family business in New Jersey, while Nat aims to be a jazz musician. Both fight with their autocratic father, George, over their professional ambitions as they come of age. Their mother, Eleanor, who has PTSD as a result of driving an ambulance during the Great War, wrestles with guilt over never telling Eddie about the horrors of war before he enlisted. As the members of the family attempt to rebuild their lives, they pay high prices, including divorce and alcoholism—but in the end, they all make peace with their losses, each in his or her own way.

Even in sweltering June, there's plenty of work for Trade Ellis on her Arizona ranch, but right now her part-time P.I. practice is as dry as the desert -- until bull rider J. B. Calendar marries a candy heiress who's crazy to turn cowgirl. Abigail Van Thiessen, nipped and tucked into great shape, has thirty-two years -- and a few hundred million dollars -- on her husband. So when she meets her untimely death on a romantic horseback trip with her newlywed stud, the cops suspect foul play. And J.B. hires Trade to prove him innocent. While plenty of people stood to gain from Abby's death -- the ex-football-star preacher she bankrolled, a half brother with his own millions, and a topless dancer with a grudge, just for starters -- no suspect looks better than J.B., a boozing tomcatter who's lucky with the ladies. Until Trade learns about another murder in town the same night Abby died ... a development that may bring the investigation -- and Trade -- to the very deadest of ends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique, honest and powerful account of what it is like to grow up with learning disabilities in the UK. An ordinary man has written an extraordinary book. Richard Keagan-Bull has learning disabilities. He struggles to read and write, but he has dictated his life story to his friend-turned-secretary Hazel Bradley. It is written exactly as he speaks – not necessarily grammatically correct, but with a unique directness and power. Richard tells the story of growing up in 1970s England and living through the decades where people with learning disabilities were increasingly given a voice. It is a story of finding your place in a world that is not always welcoming, but also of finding friends. Starting with his birth when his mother was told he would never do anything, and his early years, when he was rubbished by the headmaster who threw his schoolwork out of the window, he ends his book almost half a century later, when the boy who would never do anything landed a job at a university as a researcher. Chapters include details of his years living in the L’Arche community, where he found real friends and a sense of belonging. He has travelled the world in his role as self-advocate and reflects on the place of people with learning disabilities everywhere. This book is unique and important because it is written so clearly and entirely from an insider’s perspective. Richard writes about serious subjects with a very light touch. His book is simultaneously funny and profound. It will be of interest to anyone who wishes to gain an extremely rare insight into the life of a person with learning disabilities, in a voice that is so completely his own. This is an honest and at times poignant book filled with humour. Richard’s stories of love and international travel, of finding meaningful work and true belonging are gripping. I couldn’t put it down... Baroness Sheila Hollins

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the twentieth century began, Black and white southerners alike dealt with low life expectancy and poor healthcare in a region synonymous with early death. But the modernization of death care by a diverse group of actors changed not only death rituals but fundamental ideas about health and wellness. Kristine McCusker charts the dramatic transformation that took place when southerners in particular and Americans in general changed their thinking about when one should die, how that death could occur, and what decent burial really means. As she shows, death care evolved from being a community act to a commercial one where purchasing a purple coffin and hearse ride to the cemetery became a political statement and the norm. That evolution also required interactions between perfect strangers, especially during the world wars as families searched for their missing soldiers. In either case, being put away decent, as southerners called burial, came to mean something fundamentally different in 1955 than it had just fifty years earlier.

Book excerpt: Richard Powell is one of those individuals who is determined to have as many different experiences as possible as he goes through life. He is a hunter and has spent most of his entire adult life broke . having spent his gold on airfares and hunting licenses and guide fees on four continents. Along the way he has met incredibly interesting men and women . experienced African nights . was attacked by an enraged water buffalo in South America, been offered a thousand dollars to shoot poachers in the Chete area of the remote Zambezi Valley, and been really wet and bug bitten during the rainy season near the Matto Grosso. His latest book deals with various sagas including a hunt for water buffalo in Aboriginal country in Northern Australia where an aborigine lady named Maura called him Cartoon Richard . On this hunt the camp cook did her best to starve the paying clients which led to a hissy fit by the New Zealand dude in camp. Being a big man it was a big hissy fit. Off to Africa, a funky little Suzuki named Baby Red with 800,000 km carried Richard and his wife Margaret around safely as they did their best to hunt kudu and gemsbok and warthog and leopard. In Old Montana a hunt for tundra swans with a fine gentleman from Billings led to a morning where one rejoices to be alive . as an ancient man with many ailments refused to . 'go gently into that good night' . He was a hunter-not some old man waiting to die somewhere in an institution. And the major theme of all these adventures is laughter. Maybe different mountains and skies and accents-but always . laughter as things go awry .

Book excerpt: Focusing on Sinatra's presence in the recording studio, this discography catalogues Frank Sinatra's commercial records, V-Discs, and soundtrack film recordings. The first chapter covers Sinatra's early years as a vocalist with the big bands of Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. Entries then proceed chronologically with separate chapters for each decade. Data was collected from session reports in the files of record companies and from some union contracts. Commercial record and film soundtrack entries include band personnel and composer credits. Frank Sinatra fans, music historians, and discographers will appreciate this comprehensive catalogue of session recordings in which Sinatra either sang or conducted. The sessions span Sinatra's entire career, from his early days through the nineties. Two indexes, of song titles and of artists, complete the book.

Book excerpt: John Thompson was part of the vibrant postmodern New York literary scene of the nineteen fifties, sixties and seventies. That scene was famously fueled by love, liquor, food and parties, but most of all by ideas, by words, serious and witty, spoken and written. Thompson's only novel, never published in his lifetime, tells the poignant yet humorous tale of a young boy in the Middle West in the 1920s. Each of the six chapters is written in a different voice, creating a powerful literary mosaic of a boy's experience of tragic loss. In the author's words, the stories in this semi-autobiographical novel, "design no more but to give a few glimpses of how some things used to be a long time ago, fictitious things, when the curtain of forgetfulness was falling as it must over our childhood."
