Book excerpt: "This book follows the trade winds, the trade routes, and the port cities across the East Indies and the Orient. High finance, piracy, greed, ambition, double dealing, exploitation all is here. Driven by the search for spices, silks, gold, silver, porcelains and other oriental goods the Portuguese trading monopoly was challenged by the Dutch East India Company and then the English East India Company, the worlds first joint stock and multi-national trading companies. The struggle for supremacy between the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English ranged across the Eastern Seas and in the settlements of Goa, Malacca, Ambon, Macao, Canton, Nagasaki, Solor, Batavia, Macassar, Johor and Singapore for 250 years. Visitors to these destination will be interested in this book. The story is told by the history of these port cities, beginning with Malacca -- one of the worlds largest trading ports in 16th century and ending with the founding of Singapore and Hong Kong." --Publisher description.

Book excerpt: This two-volume work is the third edition of a book first published as a single volume in 1757, expanded to two volumes in 1766, and republished in 1772. The author, John Henry Grose (active 1750-83), was born in England and went to Bombay (present-day Mumbai) in March 1750, to work as a servant and writer for the British East India Company. The book contains Grose's descriptions of 18th-century India, including his account of the war of 1756-63, in which the British East India Company largely eliminated France as a competitor for control of India and established the basis for British rule that was to last until the middle of the 20th century. In addition to Grose's account of events in India, the 1772 edition contains an unrelated account of a journey by John Carmichael, also of the British East India Company, from Aleppo, Syria, to Basra, Iraq.
Book Synopsis The Third Voyage Journals by : Richmond Barbour
Download or read book The Third Voyage Journals written by Richmond Barbour and published by Palgrave MacMillan. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These previously unpublished journals of England’s first voyage to India illuminate a fascinating cultural achievement: the first performances of Shakespeare outside Europe. The journals of the London East India Company voice the ambitions, divisions, and traumas of a pivotal moment in the emergence of global capitalism, as London’s merchants strived for distant markets and cultivated relationships with non-Europeans. Barbour’s commentary situates the voyage historically, describes the key personnel and writing community, examines the culture of performance at sea, and consolidates the evidence for the shipboard productions of Hamlet and Richard II.
