Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period covered by this volume, roughly from Purcell to Elgar, has traditionally been seen as a dark age in British musical history. Much has been done recently to revise this view, though research still tends to focus on London as the commercial and cultural hub of the British Isles. It is becoming increasingly clear, however, that by the mid-eighteenth century musical activity outside London was highly distinctive in terms of its reach, the way it was organized, and its size, richness, and quality. There was an extraordinary amount of musical activity of all sorts, in provincial theatres and halls, in the amateur orchestras and choirs that developed in most towns of any size, in taverns, and convivial clubs, in parish churches and dissenting chapels, and, of course, in the home. This is the first book to concentrate specifically on musical life in the provinces, bringing together new archival research and offering a fresh perspective on British music of the period. The essays brought together here testify to the vital role played by music in provincial culture, not only in socializing and networking, but in regional economies and rivalries, demographics and class dynamics, religion and identity, education and recreation, and community and the formation of tradition. Most important, perhaps, as our focus shifts from London to the regions, new light is shed on neglected figures and forgotten repertoires, all of them worthy of reconsideration.
Book Synopsis "Turquerie and the Politics of Representation, 1728?876 " by : Nebahat Avcioglu
Download or read book "Turquerie and the Politics of Representation, 1728?876 " written by Nebahat Avcioglu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first full-length study devoted explicitly to the examination of Ottoman/Turkish-inspired architecture in Western Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Nebahat Avcioglu rethinks the question of cultural frontiers not as separations but as a rapport of heterogeneities. Reclaiming turquerie as cross-cultural art from the confines of the inconsequential exoticism it is often reduced to, Avcioglu analyses hitherto neglected images, designs and constructions; and links Western interest in the Ottoman Empire to notions of self-representation and national politics. In investigating why and to what effect Europeans turned to the Turk for inspiration, Avcioglu provides a far-reaching cultural reinterpretation of art and architecture in this period. Presented as a series of case studies focusing on three specific building types?kiosks, mosques, and baths?chosen on the basis that each represents the first full-fledged manifestations of their respective genres to be constructed in Western Europe, the study delves into the cultural politics of architectural forms and styles. The author argues that the appropriation of those building types was neither accidental, nor did it merely reflect European domination of another culture. The process was essentially dialectical, and contributed to transculturation in both the West and the East.
Book Synopsis Periklean Athens and Its Legacy by : Judith M. Barringer
Download or read book Periklean Athens and Its Legacy written by Judith M. Barringer and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late fifth century BC was the golden age of ancient Athens. Under the leadership of the renowned soldier-statesman Perikles, Athenians began rebuilding the Akropolis, where they created the still awe-inspiring Parthenon. Athenians also reached a zenith of artistic achievement in sculpture, vase painting, and architecture, which provided continuing inspiration for many succeeding generations. The specially commissioned essays in this volume offer a fresh, innovative panorama of the art, architecture, history, culture, and influence of Periklean Athens. Written by leading experts in the field, the articles cover a wide range of topics, including: An evaluation of Perikles' military leadership during the early stages of the Peloponnesian War. Iconographical and iconological studies of vase paintings, wall paintings, and sculpture. Explorations of the Parthenon and other monuments of the Athenian Akropolis. The legacy of Periklean Athens and its influence upon later art. Assessments of the modern reception of the Akropolis. As a whole, this collection of essays proves that even a well-explored field such as Periklean Athens can yield new treasures when mined by perceptive and seasoned investigators.

Book Synopsis Egypt Through the Eyes of Travellers by : Paul Starkey
Download or read book Egypt Through the Eyes of Travellers written by Paul Starkey and published by Astene. This book was released on 2002 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final volume of three books containing papers from the ASTENE conference at Cambridge in 1999. The theme of this title is the 18th and 19th Century European fascination with Egypt. This interest had begun during the Enlightenment and was fuelled by the invasion of Egypt by Napoleon in 1798. For many Europeans of this age, Egypt represented all the exoticism, sensuality and mystery of the Orient, and these nine papers (one of which is in French) seek to explore this relationship. Contents: A public pageant in 1806: Lord Valentia visits Egypt (Deborah Manley); Berths under the Highest Stars: Henry William Beechey in Egypt 1816-1819 (Patricia Usick); Florence Nightingale's Letters from Egypt (Loubna Youssef); Preparing to be an Egyptologist: Amelia Edwards before 1873 (Joan Rees); Rameses III, Giovanni Belzoni and the Mysterious Reverend Browne (Penelope Wilson); A House, a museum and a legend: Bait al-Kretliya (The Gayer-Anderson Mummy) (Iain Gordon Brown); Silent travellers, articulate mummies: 'Mummy Pettigrew' and the Discourse of the Dead (Sahar Sobhi Abdel-Hakim); Les detours fictionnels du recit de voyage: Le Nil, Egypte et Nubie de Maxime du Camp (Veronique Magri-Mourges).
