This project removes the need for GPS in systems by combining Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) and Visual Navigation Systems (VNS), with the help of machine learning with Artificial and Convolutional Neural Networks.In GPS denied environments a highly accurate INS is necessary, it must also be coupled with another system to bound the continious drift error that is present in INS, for which VNS is employed. The system was implemented using a ground robot to collect ground truth data, which were used as datasets to train a filter that increases the accuracy of the INS. The accuracy of the INS has been proven on the hardware platfrom over multiple datasets. Eventually Visual Navigation data can also be fed into the same system, which for now is implemented in simulation, as an independent system. A software and hardware framework have been developed that can be used in the future for further developments. The project also optimizes visual navigation for use on low power hardware with hardware acceleration for maximized speed. A low cost and scalable indoor navigation system is developed for indoor navigation, which can also be further extended to Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) in 3D space.

At the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute, we are studying those problems both in isolation and by building complete systems. Road following is an example of intermediate range navigation. The task is to compute a path in an intermediate range environment through a region of uniform visibility/navigability established first by long range navigation. Road following consists primarily of three Vision Modules which embody image processing tools, geometrical and model-based constraints, and rule-based reasoning capabilities; it is the responsibility of these modules to establish a representation of the three-dimensional structure of the road scene. This system also includes a Planner, a Navigator and a Pilot. The Planner establishes goals and operating constraints for the Navigator, which is responsible for generalized path planning. The Pilot interprets this path into basic commands understandable by the ALV's motor controllers. The Vision Executive is the module responsible for the overall vision process control. It is also the Vision Modules and Executive which establish a labeling of the scene, consistent with: the representations derived from the image domain (2-D symbolics), the geometricial interpretations, the knowledge base.

Ex amples of vision-based vehicle guidance systems include collision warning systems, steering control systems for tracking painted lane marks, and speed control systems for preventing rear-end collisions. Like other guidance systems for aircraft and trains, these systems are ex pected to increase traffic safety significantly. For example, safety improve ments of aircraft landing processes after the introduction of automatic guidance systems have been reported to be 100 times better than prior to installment. Although the safety of human lives is beyond price, the cost for automatic guidance could be compensated by decreased insurance costs. It is becoming more important to increase traffic safety by decreasing the human driver's load in our society, especially with an increasing population of senior people who continue to drive. The second potential social benefit is the improvement of traffic efficiency by decreasing the spacing between vehicles without sacrificing safety. It is reported, for example, that four times the efficiency is expected if the spacing between cars is controlled automatically at 90 cm with a speed of 100 kmjh compared to today's typical manual driving. Although there are a lot of tech nical, psychological, and social issues to be solved before realizing the high density jhigh-speed traffic systems described here, highly efficient highways are becoming more important because of increasing traffic congestion.
