Book excerpt: Excerpt from Visits to America The third point is that the book is not the work of an observer who has made a hurried tour through the country, visited the more conspicuous places designated in the common guide-books, and then presumes to write impressions of the people and country; but it is the conscientious opinion of a woman of matured intelligence, who has seen much of human nature, and has visited America three times before taking up her pen to note her inferences from what has been seen and heard. Each time Miss F aithfull came here, she came with an earnest pur pose to study our society, our women, our industries, that she might learn something of use in her special work. She was each time among us more in the character of the learner than the critic, and it will be seen that her statements from beginning to end are entirely free from any tincture of pedantry or ego tism. She speaks candidly, frankly, awarding cordial approval wherever she has found matters to her lik ing, and expressing as decided dissent or reproof, yet always in kindly terms, regarding matters that she deems it expedient to censure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures on a Short Visit to America Fourtkly and Laslly I am not all sure that it was the wrong time of the year - that is, for me; it being equally the same to me (as far as stomach and appetite and pulse and nerve are concerned) whether it blows a gale of wind or a gentle zephyr; whether the sea sweeps fore and afttor laps feebly and lazily a few inches up the ships side, so long as I can manage to hold on. While I can certainly bear heat much better than cold, and if I had to choose between going in mid winter or mid summer my suffrage would be given for the former; for, amongst other reasons this special one, that I would rather run the Mame of being bitten by American frost in winter; than submit to the certain horror and indignity of being bitten by American mosquitoes in the summer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through America: Or Nine Months in the United States AS the ground which is covered in the following pages has been often described before, I feel that some apology is due from me for submitting to the public a book of travel which will take the reader through scenes with the general aspects of which he is, probably, already sufficiently familiar. But America, with its vast natural resources, and with a population at once ingenious and enterprising, is, necessarily, in a continual state of development and change. For the traveller, therefore, who visits, even, the beaten tracks of such a country, there will always be plenty of fresh material to collect, and abundant opportunity for the enunciation of new views of old subjects; and I venture to hope that in the endeavour to present a truthful account of actual ex periences of travel in the United States, I may, perhaps, have gathered a few facts which will prove to be something more than mere personal reminiscences, and be interesting and valuable to the public at large. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Visit to the United States To supply the slave-markets of the Western world, one hundred and twenty thousand native Africans are, on the most moderate calculation, annually required whilst the slave-markets of the East require fifty thousand more. In procuring these victims of a guilty traffic, to be devoted to the rigours of perpetual slavery, it is computed that two hundred and eighty thousand perish in addition, and under circumstances the most revolting and afflicting. But this is not all. In the Southern section of the United States, and in British India, a vast internal slave trade is carried on, second only in horror and extent to that which has so long desolated and degraded Africa. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What to See in America In this compact, single volume, with its 500 illustrations, each state in the Union has a chapter, and each of the cities of New York and Washington has an additional chapter. The book is concerned with the human interest of our coun try in nature, history, industry, literature, legend, and biography. It is intended for travelers who visit the places of interest in person, and also for those other travelers whom chance or necessity keeps at home, but who travel far and wide on the wings of fancy. The information is much concentrated, but not to the extent of sacrificing readableness. Under each state is included such things as the first settlement, the capital, the largest city, the highest point, and facts of general interest concerning its past and present that add to the traveler's zest in visiting it. My own wanderings have taken me to every state in the Union, and have furnished much of value in preparing the book, but I have gathered additional material from many sources. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Second Visit to the United States of North America, Vol. 1 of 2 To account for'the toleration prevailing in New England and the states chie y peopled from thence, we must refer to a com bination of many favorable circumstances, some of them of ancient date, and derived from the times of the first Puritan settlers. To these I shall have many opportunities of alluding in the sequel but I shall mention now a more modern cause, the effect of which was brought vividly before my mind, in conversations with sev eral lawyers of Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, whom I fell in with on this tour. I mean the reaction against the extreme Calvinism of the church first established in this part of America, a movement which has had a powerful tendency to subdue and mitigate sectarian bitterness. In order to give me some idea of the length to which the old Calvinistic doctrines were instilled into the infant mind, one of my companions pre sented me with a curious poem, called the Day of Doom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What I Saw in America Travel ought to combine amusement with instruc tion; but most travellers are so much amused that they refuse to be instructed. I do not blame them for being amused it is perfectly natural to be amused at a Dutchman for being Dutch or a Chinaman for being Chinese. Where they are wrong is that they take their own amusement seriously. They base on it their serious ideas of international instruction. It was said that the Englishman takes his pleasures sadly; and the pleasure of despising foreigners is one which he takes most sadly of all. He comes to scoff and does not remain to pray, but rather to excommunicate. Hence in international relations there is far too little laughing, and far too much sneering. But I believe that there is a better way which largely consists of laughter a form of friendship between nations which is actually founded on differences. To hint at some such better way is the only excuse of this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The literary quality of Miss Montague's story does not need any sponsor, yet it is a privilege to be the first of my countrymen to give thanks for so charming a tribute. The publication of our plans fell as a bomb-shell upon the community. Some said we were candi dates for the Kalamazoo Insane Asylum even to consider such a foolhardy proposition; a great many thought that it was simply a little newspaper story, that possibly we might start, but that we should be back very shortly; and there were a few, yes, a very few, who really did think that it was a great trip for any young man to take, consider ing it from an educational standpoint, but even they thought that we should fail. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tour in the United States IT had been an arrangement between Mr. John Brooks and myself, after the termination of the long struggle for free trade in corn, in which, as members of the Council of the anti-corn-law League, from its commencement to its close, we had both taken an active, and rather an exhaust ing part, that we should seek some relaxation in a journey somewhere; and a pretty long voyage, for the benefit of his health, having been recommended to Mr. Brooks, we resolved to see the magnificent scenery of the United States, and to observe the working of democratic institutions in that great republic. I had long desired to visit America in pre ference to the old states of continental Europe, not only because I had relatives there, but that I regarded the country as destined to contain the most numerous branch of the anglo-saxon family; and my pursuits in life had given me more interest in the prospects of mankind than in their past history. A brief tour needs but a brief record. In the following pages little more is intended than to convey the impressions made upon the eye and mind of a hasty passenger through a country of much present beauty and great future.
