Book Synopsis Visions of Peace by : Takashi Shogimen
Download or read book Visions of Peace written by Takashi Shogimen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visions of Peace: Asia and the West explores the diversity of past conceptualizations as well as the remarkable continuity in the hope for peace across global intellectual traditions. Current literature, prompted by September 11, predominantly focuses on the laws and ethics of just wars or modern ideals of peace. Asian and Western ideals of peace before the modern era have largely escaped scholarly attention. This book examines Western and Asian visions of peace that existed prior to c.1800 by bringing together experts from a variety of intellectual traditions. The historical survey ranges from ancient Greek thought, early Christianity and medieval scholasticism to Hinduism, classical Confucianism and Tokuguwa Japanese learning, before illuminating unfamiliar aspects of peace visions in the European Enlightenment. Each chapter offers a particular case study and attempts to rehabilitate a 'forgotten' conception of peace and reclaim its contemporary relevance. Collectively they provide the conceptual resources to inspire more creative thinking towards a new vision of peace in the present. Students and specialists in international relations, peace studies, history, political theory, philosophy, and religious studies will find this book a valuable resource on diverse conceptions of peace.

Book Synopsis By More Than Providence by : Michael J. Green
Download or read book By More Than Providence written by Michael J. Green and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after the American Revolution, ?certain of the founders began to recognize the strategic significance of Asia and the Pacific and the vast material and cultural resources at stake there. Over the coming generations, the United States continued to ask how best to expand trade with the region and whether to partner with China, at the center of the continent, or Japan, looking toward the Pacific. Where should the United States draw its defensive line, and how should it export democratic principles? In a history that spans the eighteenth century to the present, Michael J. Green follows the development of U.S. strategic thinking toward East Asia, identifying recurring themes in American statecraft that reflect the nation's political philosophy and material realities. Drawing on archives, interviews, and his own experience in the Pentagon and White House, Green finds one overarching concern driving U.S. policy toward East Asia: a fear that a rival power might use the Pacific to isolate and threaten the United States and prevent the ocean from becoming a conduit for the westward free flow of trade, values, and forward defense. By More Than Providence works through these problems from the perspective of history's major strategists and statesmen, from Thomas Jefferson to Alfred Thayer Mahan and Henry Kissinger. It records the fate of their ideas as they collided with the realities of the Far East and adds clarity to America's stakes in the region, especially when compared with those of Europe and the Middle East.

Book Synopsis Asia's New Geopolitics by : Michael R. Auslin
Download or read book Asia's New Geopolitics written by Michael R. Auslin and published by Hoover Press. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indo-Pacific is fast becoming the world's dominant region. As it grows in power and wealth, geopolitical competition has reemerged, threatening future stability not merely in Asia but around the globe. China is aggressive and uncooperative, and increasingly expects the world to bend to its wishes. The focus on Sino-US competition for global power has obscured "Asia's other great game": the rivalry between Japan and China. A modernizing India risks missing out on the energies and talents of millions of its women, potentially hampering the broader role it can play in the world. And in North Korea, the most frightening question raised by Kim Jong-un's pursuit of the ultimate weapon is also the simplest: can he control his nukes? In Asia's New Geopolitics: Essays on Reshaping the Indo-Pacific, Michael R. Auslin examines these and other key issues transforming the Indo-Pacific and the broader world. He also explores the history of American strategy in Asia from the 18th century through today. Taken together, Auslin's essays convey the richness and diversity of the region: with more than three billion people, the Indo-Pacific contains over half of the global population, including the world's two most populous nations: India and China. In a riveting final chapter, Auslin imagines a war between America and China in a bid for regional hegemony and what this conflict might look like.

Book Synopsis Asian Values, Western Dreams by : Greg Sheridan
Download or read book Asian Values, Western Dreams written by Greg Sheridan and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 1999-10 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian Values, Western Dreams provides a provocative examination of the cultural relationship between Asia and the West. It asks a simple question: how do Asian societies maintain their cultural uniqueness in the face of Western cultural, economic and military power, in the face of globalisation? In the wake of the regional economic crisis, Sheridan examines lives and societies in stress and transition. He draws on hundreds of interviews across Asia and the United States, from Presidents and Prime Ministers to beggars and housewives, from civil servants and traders to politicians and prostitutes. He challenges popular interpretations from Western gurus such as Sam Huntington, Francis Fukuyama and former Hong Kong governor, Chris Patten. Instead Sheridan chases Asian Values down the houtungs (lane ways) of Beijing and across the kampungs of Malaysia, into the old colonial cities of India and out to the smallest village in the Philippines countryside. He draws on a wide range of scholarship and twenty years experience working in the region to offer an ambitious, region-wide interpretation of the Asian Values debate. A mixture of travel writing and cultural and political analysis, Asian Values, Western Dreams offers insights into relations between Asian nations, as well as between Asia and the West. Whether for the executive or student, the Western traveller or the Asian reader interested in learning about their neighbours, Asian Values, Western Dreams is an indispensable guide to the new Asia.

Book Synopsis The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere by : Jeremy A. Yellen
Download or read book The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere written by Jeremy A. Yellen and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, Jeremy Yellen exposes the history, politics, and intrigue that characterized the era when Japan's "total empire" met the total war of World War II. He illuminates the ways in which the imperial center and its individual colonies understood the concept of the Sphere, offering two sometimes competing, sometimes complementary, and always intertwined visions—one from Japan, the other from Burma and the Philippines. Yellen argues that, from 1940 to 1945, the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere epitomized two concurrent wars for Asia's future: the first was for a new type of empire in Asia, and the second was a political war, waged by nationalist elites in the colonial capitals of Rangoon and Manila. Exploring Japanese visions for international order in the face of an ever-changing geopolitical situation, The Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere explores wartime Japan's desire to shape and control its imperial future while its colonies attempted to do the same. At Japan's zenith as an imperial power, the Sphere represented a plan for regional domination; by the end of the war, it had been recast as the epitome of cooperative internationalism. In the end, the Sphere could not survive wartime defeat, and Yellen's lucidly written account reveals much about the desires of Japan as an imperial and colonial power, as well as the ways in which the subdued colonies in Burma and the Philippines jockeyed for agency and a say in the future of the region.
Book Synopsis The New Asian Hemisphere by : Kishore Mahbubani
Download or read book The New Asian Hemisphere written by Kishore Mahbubani and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-11-12 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, the Asians (Chinese, Indians, Muslims, and others) have been bystanders in world history. Now they are ready to become co-drivers. Asians have finally understood, absorbed, and implemented Western best practices in many areas: from free-market economics to modern science and technology, from meritocracy to rule of law. They have also become innovative in their own way, creating new patterns of cooperation not seen in the West. Will the West resist the rise of Asia? The good news is that Asia wants to replicate, not dominate, the West. For a happy outcome to emerge, the West must gracefully give up its domination of global institutions, from the IMF to the World Bank, from the G7 to the UN Security Council. History teaches that tensions and conflicts are more likely when new powers emerge. This, too, may happen. But they can be avoided if the world accepts the key principles for a new global partnership spelled out in The New Asian Hemisphere.

Book excerpt: Generation Rising traces the development of Providence Youth Student Movement (PrYSM), a grassroots, LGBTQ+ youth-led organization of Southeast Asian Americans whose families migrated to Providence, Rhode Island, in the aftermath of the American war in Viet Nam, Laos, and Cambodia. This in-depth ethnography delves into topics that challenge a new generation of community organizers today: collective identity formation, intersectional leadership development, coalitions and political campaign strategies, and enacting a vision for a transformative movement. The book explores how Southeast Asian American organizers in this historic period have navigated the intergenerational demands from both their co-ethnic community elders and social movement elders to forge their own agenda, strategies, and culture, while resisting constraints imposed by funders. Their story captures the struggles and growth of movement-building for youth activists fighting to be free.
