Book excerpt: Excerpt from A View of the Present State of the Scilly Islands: Exhibiting Their Vast Importance to the British Empire, the Improvements of Which They Are Susceptible, and a Particular Account of the Means Lately Adopted for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Inhabitants The draught here alluded to is a chart of the Scilly Islands, which is certainly plan ned and executed in a judicious manner; the extracts of various grants and charters, which the author has made from the Tower Records, are valuable to the antiquarian and historian; but of the work at large it must be observed (how interesting soever it might once have been) that it has no claims what soever to scientific research, just proportion, or regular arrangement. The style is gar rulous and common-place, - abounding with frequent abortive attempts at wit, and ridi culous conceits. The writer dwells with tedious minuteness on many trifles, - swells into bombast in describing real curiosities. Download or read book Defending Scilly written by Mark Bowden and published by Historic England. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Isles of Scilly are renowned for their natural beauty, wild flowers and temperate climate, but there is another reason to visit these paradise islands. Since the 16th century they have been in the frontline of this country's military defences and successive generations of fortifications have survived in Scilly, unmatched in any other location around Britain. This unrivalled survival was due to the lack of pressure to develop the islands and happily because the feared enemy rarely attacked. However, there is another threat to this precious heritage, the power of the sea. William Borlase in the mid-18th century recorded how much of the islands' history had succumbed to rising sea level, and today increasingly turbulent weather patterns may be accelerating the process of coastal erosion. This book celebrates the unique survival of military fortifications on the islands, but it also serves to illustrate the value and vulnerability of the whole country's coastal heritage. Like King Canute, we cannot turn back the sea, but we can celebrate these precious survivals from the colourful history of our island nation.
