Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed Vietnam Journal series from Don Lomax, nominated for a Harvey Award, is collected and presented as a series of graphic novels. Vietnam Journal is a look at the Vietnam War through the eyes of a war journalist, Scott 'Journal' Neithammer, as he chronicles the lives and events of soldiers on the front line during the Vietnam War. Creator Don Lomax based Vietnam Journal on his experiences on his tour of duty in Vietnam in the mid 1960's. In VOLUME THREE, Scott ‘Journal’ Neithammer returns to Vietnam, having recovered from his war injuries, but his expectations of being assigned to a safe area dissipate as he is dropped into the middle of a firefight in the Mekong Delta. Neithammer joins up with a new group deployed in the Vietnam War by the US Navy...the Seals. They’re not exactly happy with the older 'Journal' tagging along but orders are orders. The problem is 'Journal' can’t really figure out what the Seals’ orders exactly are. As preparations get underway for the Dak To engagement, 'Journal' ventures out into the jungle but ends up escorting a pregnant villager to safety only to discover she’s really with the enemy. And afterwards, as a battle rages towards occupying a hill that has no significant value, 'Journal' finds he has to deal with both choking gas and Vietcong snipers. These stories plus a short story titled “Dustoff” are included in Book Three. Collects comic book issues #9-12. Entertainment Weekly labels Vietnam Journal as "a graphic novel you should own" and is recommended by the Military History Book Club, while Max Brooks (World War Z) names Vietnam Journal as one of his best war comic series. "Lomax bases his fictional work on his real experiences in Vietnam in 1966, with powerful results. It is Lomax's concern for average soldiers that, in the end, makes his work significant." - Publishers Weekly. "This is, without a doubt, the most graphic, realistic and emotionally powerful portrayal of the Vietnam War that's ever been seen in comic form." - Jason E. Aaron, Wizard’s 2008 Best Writer. "Even today, VIETNAM JOURNAL is one of the most gritty and brutally honest war stories ever published." - Brian Cronin, Comic Book Resources. A Caliber Comics release.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed comic book war series from Don Lomax, nominated for a Harvey Award, is now presented as a series of graphic novel volume collections. Vietnam Journal is a look at the Vietnam War through the eyes of a war journalist Scott Neithammer, a freelance reporter the troops have nicknamed 'Journal'. As an embedded reporter, Neithammer has a single minded focus and obsession to report the controversial war from the "grunt’s" point of view. It chronicles the lives and events of soldiers on the front line during the war. In VOLUME FOUR, Scott 'Journal' Niethammer, lost in the jungle and on his own, sees firsthand the terror the Vietnamese villages contend with on an almost daily basis. But he comes across an U.S. army dog named Luther who faithfully serves. And as Operation Pershing unleashes 'Journal' hears a tale from a young soldier about an action soldiers didn’t usually talk about, especially to a reporter. It is a grey line between morality and loyalty and 'Journal' is also forced to deal with that situation. He also begins to put to paper the struggles of American prisoners of war held by the Viet Cong, as an American soldier, after brutal imprisonment by the Viet Cong, recounts his tale and 'Journal' finally understands how resilient the American soldier can be even at such a young age. Collects comic book issues #13-16. Picked by Entertainment Weekly as "a graphic novel you should own" and recommended by the Military History Book Club, Vietnam Journal is written and drawn by Don Lomax, a Vietnam War veteran. "Lomax bases his fictional work on his real experiences in Vietnam in 1966, with powerful results. It is Lomax's concern for average soldiers that, in the end, makes his work significant." - Publishers Weekly. A Caliber Comics release.

Book excerpt: Don Lomax's critically acclaimed Vietnam Journal is back with all new tales of Scott ‘Journal’ Neithammer as he reports on the heartache and headache, and the young soldiers on both sides of the Vietnam War. This volume takes ‘Journal’ from late 1969, the Monsoon season, to May of 1970, and the beginning of the Cambodian incursion. As the war officially spreads into that neighboring country and tests the South Vietnamese Military on their capabilities of sustaining the war against the North Vietnamese Communists on their own. Along the way ‘Journal’ finds himself caught in the crosshairs of a juvenile sniper, and a private war for his own sanity as he is forced to fight a plague of rats at a forward firebase. And from a bitter sweet tryst in a back street bar in Saigon, to rolling into Cambodia with an untrustworthy cameraman new to his craft...the action never stops and questions about Neithammer’s career choice continually lay just below the surface. Collects issues 1-5. Praise for Vietnam Journal: “Lomax bases his fictional work on his real experiences in Vietnam in 1966, with powerful results. It is Lomax's concern for average soldiers that, in the end, makes his work significant.” - Publishers Weekly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year author K.G. McLaughlin graduated from high school, 1967, was known as ÒThe Summer of LoveÓ by an ever-increasing hippie movement that had been sweeping the country since shortly after the John Kennedy assassination in 1963. It was the best summer of his life. But that ended abruptly, he joined the Marines and was guaranteed a trip to Vietnam. In Scenes from a Vietnam-Era Diary, he chronicles his personal odyssey from a safe and content life in Cape Cod to a Marine Corps boot camp culture shock that unknowingly, at the time, was a gentle prelude to the hellish world of being a frontline combat soldier in Vietnam. Raw and uncomproming, McLaughlin presents a real-time, journal-based narrative describing combat while spending months in the hot, waterlogged, bug-infested jungle with one close call after another dodging bullets, bombs, and mines. Scenes from a Vietnam-Era Diary offers a multifaceted narrative of life, death, and the unspeakable horrors of serving in the Vietnam War.

In BOOK SEVEN, the United States military decides to launch an offensive into the A Shau Valley near the Laotian border. This has been a long time staging area that the Viet Cong have used for years to send men and supplies into South Vietnam from the enemy’s sanctuary in Laos. Meanwhile 'Journal' becomes fascinated with the story of a prisoner of war who belonged to a small tribe that has lived in the A Shau Valley for centuries. They have no sense of country, politics or ideology, only for their local people, but they are dragged anyhow into a war they couldn’t even comprehend. And as the battle at A Shau Valley continues even though Nixon has taken over as President of the United States, ‘Journal, always trying to stay as impartial as possible, can’t contain his rage when he finds the Viet Cong receiving medical supplies from United States protesters back home against the war. Also included in BOOK SEVEN is the collected Hamburger Hill serial series that appeared in Gallery Magazine. Picked by Entertainment Weekly as "a graphic novel you should own" and recommended by the Military History Book Club. Book excerpt: The Vietnam Diary 1966 - 1967 is a collection of journal entries, letters and poetry written during a young man's tour of duty in Vietnam. It includes photos and flashbacks that occurred during the author's writing of the book, and is illustrative of the lives of the thousands of troops that experienced that controversial war. The author joined the Marine Corps in 1966 and by the fall of that year was in Vietnam in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Division in Golf Company, Weapons Platoon, was posted as a machine gunner. He was involved in 2 major battles, many smaller ones and was wounded twice. The journal is a chronological account of his year there starting from boot camp in San Diego to his final days in the service. Mixed with his actual journal entries are letters he writes home and poetry he wrote that reflects his response to the war, combat and death. The letters to his father and his mother and sister are distinctly different in content and tone, the journal entries the musings of a young boy away from his family for the first time in horrific conditions, the poetry fresh with promise, and the remembrance's often painful. By way of example: Excerpt from Letter to Dad: "But speaking of your counter-insurgent, you can bet your boots that's what we are. We employ the same tactics they use with heavier armament and better equipped personnel. We are hardly conventional troops, though they call us that back home for political as well as social reasons, but we use much the same tactics as do the VC short of torture, killing of innocents, etc. although there are scattered incidents of these as in any war. But we hide in the field, search and destroy, sweep, ambush, etc. generally being miserable, wet, hungry, cold-hot, and wishing we were home." Excerpt from Letter to Mom & Sis: "I received my tentative orders and I'm scheduled to go overseas Nov. 21, so it looks like I'm not going to get a chance to see you before I go. There isn't real need, for love explains and shows all, and it is enough to carry me across those waters. I love you both and I know that I am loved, so I'm content until I return next fall." Excerpt from Journal Entry: "Relatives and family... worry. They worry about me and I worry about them worrying about me. Winds flowing every way and I'm coming back... worry is ungood and bothers. Forget and live life as I'm doing on my part with death possibly just around over there..." Part of a poem written after six months in-country: What brings me here? What leads my path To find this dreary horror Singing a muddy melody of Blood and lost friends? Perhaps a quiet somebody will Come leading me by the hand To sit and explain those things And all things and, and... Excerpt from a Remembrance: "I could feel the bullets whizzing around my head like angry hornets and then there was a loud clap next to my face with the sonic slap of a bullet that just missed me. I crouched down unable to see where it came from, cursing and angry then got up and moved forward. Eventually the firing stopped. No one was hurt and that bullet didn't have my name on it. Still left me shaking." About the Author The author served a 2 year enlistment and was honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal with two Purple Hearts. He was profoundly affected by the war both physically and mentally and it drastically changed the way he looks at life. In 1997 he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma caused by his exposure to Agent Orange, the chemical herbicide and defoliant made by Monsanto that U.S. forces sprayed extensively in order to kill vegetation in the Vietnamese jungle and expose Viet Cong hideouts. His Epilogue credits Monsanto for ruining his life and the lives of so many others following the war.
